i was watching the news last night.

the latest word from the war front is that we should be able to peaceably work out our differences with north korea.

as humiliating as it will be for us to kiss north korea's ass, we will do so because they do have the ability to nuke our west coast.

I'm glad I'm alive.

I'm fortunate I live in a country that has freedom of speech, amongst many other freedoms.

I'm proud to be a black male in this country with a clean record and a decent job.

I have a problem saying I'm proud to be American, and in my opinion that has no reflection whatsoever on anyone who fought in war for the freedom of this country. I respect and admire those from ANY country who went to fight for their freedom. I respect the things Martin Luther King and Malcom X did in order for blacks to have the freedoms they have now too. I just have a problem with the whole patriotism thing - I guess it's due to being raised a Witness. That phrase to me is directly associated with "God Bless America" which I have another problem with. It's a great country to be in, no doubt, but me boasting about being proud to be from this country makes it seem like I'm rubbing it in other peoples faces that may have not been so fortunate to be born here.

Maybe someone can explain to me the nature of this pride and why it's evidently so important for Americans to feel this way. We're all freakin' LUCKY that we, by chance, happened to be born here. My heart goes out to those who can't enjoy life like we can - it's not fair.

I dunno, the term just seems to automatically chacterize my personality, which is what I don't want to happen. If I say I'm proud to be American, that means I agree with and support the political agenda of this country, correct? If so, I don't want to go there, but if not...then yeah, I guess I'm proud to be American. :-P

Do other countries express their pride in being where they are from as adamantly as the USA does?? Talk to me you Aussies and Brits! :-)

This is a very interesting thread. So lets take it into 2003. The person who said they thought Cali (California) was a pretty neat place to stay racially has NEVER lived there. Has NEVER heard of Orange County, Silcon Valley or the LAPD.

Hey sableindian, I've lived in Silicon Valley for 4 years now - I'm black and haven't had one problem. The only incident was one time I walked in a bar and the bartender served everyone around me several times over before serving me. They made their point. I made mine and didn't leave a tip.

Other than that, no problems for me - especially in San Fran. I guess it just depends on the person..??

I have no attraction to L.A. whatsoever...there is much more to California than L.A. you know....

The amount of money spent on the military is phenomanal - it definitely looks like we have the ability to fight wars with planes and ships now and rely less on troops, which is a good thing. Imagine 50 years from now - war will be like playing a video game!!!

Yeah, I didn't quite believe that draft talk anyways...what I did get from it is that a) the USA is definitely planning on fighting Iraq b) the possibility for casualties is greater than the Gulf War or Afghanistan.

I think your post is very narrow-minded.

Numerous people have stated that just because they feel the USA is a bully does not mean that don't appreciate the freedom enjoyed in this country, nor does it mean we'd rather see China as a superpower. Why do all of you continually jump to the same retarded conclusions?

You're brainwashed by American patriotism, just the way they want you to be. We want to see more evidence, more proof, to attack Iraq. You instantly believe every word Bush and Powell state. That's your own perogative, just don't bash others who don't trust Bush as easily as you do.

Yeah, oil powers the world - for now. What's going to happen when it runs out? Oil is Bush's business, that's why he's doing everything he can to make sure America has plenty of it. That's why he probably hasn't even read the whole Kyoto policy, cuz he knows it would not be profitable for his business ventures. Personally, I'd rather see a president in power who was more concerned about protecting the earths resources rather than racing to use them up as quickly as possible. There are other alternatives, you know.

Holding hands across America may not prevent another terror attack, but the Bush administration didn't stop it either. In fact, they may have contributed to it. I really hope they use every measure possible to prevent civilian deaths, but how can you trust these people that say this? I don't trust any of them because nobody has given any reason to do so. All I can do is hope they are telling the truth, but I'm sure you're well aware of America's ability to sweep their dirt underneath the carpet.

You guys could learn a lot from William Penwell. His posts are well thought out and are not biased in any way. You must have the capability to discern what is happening in the world, and weigh all of the pros and cons.

The fact of the matter is that any superpower would be a bully. That's what power does to greedy, selfish people. This country is looking towards a New World Order - it wants to dominate the whole planet. So what do you think they are doing to prepare for this? Establish their presence in different parts of the world would be a great guess for starters. Don't you see the big picture? Iraq is next, and after Iraq there will be another one - I bet you bottom dollar. It's not going to stop because the plan is to control the world!!

So yeah...if Sadaam is threatening the USA and other countries and not living up to the U.N. sanctions, then yes, he should be dealt with. However I don't feel this is the REAL reason for going over there, and that's my whole problem with the impending war. What's the rush? We've got tons of forces over there already and still no evidence found of WMD. Since we have tons of satellites up in space able to spy on anywhere in the world we want to, you would THINK maybe we had some satellite evidence, and that's what brought up the accusation...?? From what I've read, Sadaam didn't kick the inspectors out in 98, we PULLED them out, correct? Interesting. I just have a big problem whenever anyone lies to me - it's a personal pet peev, and that's what I feel is happening here. Nothing is adding up. All anyone can say is that he's evil because he went after Kuwait and he gassed the Kurds, all which happened a decade ago. The Gulf War took out a lot of his capabilities to make these weapons....I think the threat would be more of him getting weapons from someone else rather than them making them personally. At any rate, until evidence is produced I have a hard time supporting the war against Iraq.

I pay my taxes and I voted, but I don't support lives being lost just so a good 'ol boy from Texas can cash in on more oil profits. How anyone cannot see that is beyond me. Do a search on bush oil business and read for yourself.

From my vantage point, war doesn't help the economy, it helps companies (Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, etc.) that make products to support the Armed Forces. Take for example Lockheed Martin, a company that " engages in the design, manufacture, integration, and operation products and services ranging from aircraft, spacecraft and launch vehicles to missiles, electronics, information systems and energy management." Check out their stock price - they have moved from $16.63 in March 2000 to $57.70 as of Dec 27, 2002 whereas your technology companies have plummeted. If you're in the Arms sector you will fare well in times of war. The rest of us can forget about it.

Hmmmm...I wonder if the Bush family has business ties to any Arms companies. :-)

Where's the strong backing from these countries for war in Iraq? I dunno, just seems to me that the USA is the only one that really considers Iraq a threat. Just makes me wonder why. I mean, I know others consider him dangerous, but the general consensus has been that now is not the right time, nor is there WMD evidence. What is it that USA sees or is interested in that these other countries don't?

The United States and its allies can achieve their goals with relatively few troops and costs can be measured as low as $20 billion.

Since when is 20 billion dollars a "low" cost? I'm sure there are other ways that money could benefit our flailing economy. ??

holy cow man - i grew up playing classical piano, but i haven't played classical music seriously for 10 years and have lost a lot of it. I remember trying to play those same pieces and not getting anywhere CLOSE to mastering them.

you are deeply respected for playing those "industrial strength" pieces, that's for sure. I like the way Vladimir Horowitz played them, personally. He was a little sloppy at times, but his passion and dynamics were incredible.

WASHINGTON: The Dallas Peace Centre has come out with 17 reasons why the United States should not invade Iraq.

They are:

1. Iraq poses no clear and present danger to other countries, especially the US, as there is no evidence of plans to invade another country or use weapons of mass destruction.

2. Iraq poses less of a threat to the world than at any time in the last decade, according to a 2002 CIA report.

3. An invasion will make it easier, not harder, for Al Qaeda to recruit terrorists, leading to an increase in terrorism in the US and around the world.

4. An invasion gives Hussein a reason to use his full arsenal of weapons against attackers and nearby countries because he would have nothing to lose.

5. No link has been established between Iraq and the Al Qaeda terrorist network.

6. An invasion could inflame a region where international tensions are already high.

7. An unprovoked attack by one country against another is an unnecessary and immoral act that blatantly disrespects national sovereignty and security.

8. The massive civilian casualties likely to occur in an invasion would unite the world against the US in a globally-interrelated age in which isolation is foolish.

9. The hundreds of billions of dollars required for an invasion and long-term occupation of Iraq could push the US economy into a deep recession.

10. Worldwide opposition to an invasion could further damage the US economy because one-quarter of our GNP is tied to international trade.

11. Regime change is not an acceptable reason for an invasion.

12. Experts estimate that Iraq is still three to five years away from developing even a short-range nuclear weapon that would endanger its neighbours.

13. A pre-emptive strike would lend justification to other nations, to attack their perceived enemies.

14. An invasion in defiance of the United Nations would snub the legitimacy of the only world body equipped to mediate international conflicts.

15. A unilateral Iraq invasion and subsequent invasions of other countries now sanctioned by the National Security Strategy of the United States 2002, which permits and even encourages pre-emptive strikes - would colour the US as the new conquering Romans.

16. Polls show that most Americans oppose a unilateral invasion.

17. Wars and acts of terrorism precipitated by an Iraq invasion could last for decades in an endless cycle of hatred and revenge.

I wonder if America could make a list showing 17 reasons to attack Iraq. There's only 3 I could think of:

1. Sadaam is a blood-thirsty maniac.

2. Iraq is part of "the axis of evil."

3. If we don't get him now, he'll get us later.

4. ????

Just find it interesting what other newspapers are printing in comparison to how the news reads here. Interesting indeed.
