Terry,
The Solidarity movement loved communist socialism so much they couldn't wait to be free of it! The courage of the Poles was courage directed against the communist collective.
A good point of view on the issue is expressed in this assertion:
"It is a paradox the fact that the Communistic Party?s main slogan said ? Workers of All Enterprises ? Unite!? After all, there were the workers of all enterprises that got united to overthrow Communism." http://www.stfrancis.edu/ba/ghkickul/stuwebs/btopics/works/Solidarity.html
My comment:
The communist collective was fake - it only existed in the communist propaganda. There was no collective, only a small bunch of communist party leaders and the majority of Poles opposed it. A classic Animal Farm situation.
The Solidarity collective (or "movement" as you call it) was real, or "pure" if you like. The Solidarity collective served to achieve a revolutionary goal of breaking free from the Soviet rule and totalitarianism. This goal was fulfilled when we achieved freedom, democracy and PLURALISM. I'd say the Solidarity movement was one of the very few examples of a socialist collective put to a good use in human history in that it didn't end up as an "everlasting transitional" revolutionary government (like in Cuba).
The problem with communism is not that it promotes the idea of a collective. The problem is that it uses propaganda to convince people that there is a genuine collective in society.
"All animals are equal ........ But some animals are more equal than others."
Interestingly, the second part of the rule was a contradiction of the "pure" principles of communism. So wouldn't you say that the original principle isn't so bad, but it's only the mixing that spoils it?
That's my point: Communism is terribly impractical. Capitalism can be very practical if you allow for moderate pluralism.

Sunday Talk: U.N. Worlds' most corrupt organization.
by integ inyes, it's true.
i went to the sunday talk this past week, and the speaker actually referred to the un as the "worlds' most corrupt organization.
" i wonder if he was ad-libbing, or if that is still in the societies outline.

I think someone wrote a thread about the last summer convention they had.
In one of the talks the speaker boasted about the increasing undertstanding JWs had received from Jehovah.
The speaker mentioned a few newly revised doctrines, and one of them was the identification (in the late 1990s) of the "detestable" thing from the book of Daniel as the UN.
I guess the Witing Dep. are schizophrenicly confused about the issue. They're simply manipulative and inconsistent. No wonder.

Whats the Biggest JW contradiction?
by sleepy inwhat do you think the biggest contradiction was in jw teaching or logic?
i remember people confronted us with the argument that maybe over thousands of years the bible has changed, we would probably say any changes were minor, and we have the dead sea scrolls etc that don't vary much from the bible today.
yet when asked by people with a little knowledge about the bible why the name jehovah was not in any manuscripts of the new testament, we would effectivly says its because they have been changed over time.

Terry,
Your dreams about pure capitalism are unrealistic. Not because they don't work at the theoretical level. Even communism works at the theoretical level as long as you make certain (much more naive) assumptions about human desires and attitudes.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fallacy lies in the fact that you seem to think it's possible to convince every member of a given society that they should accept a pure form of capitalism (or any other system for that matter) because it's the best way to go. This is wishful thinking.
It is impossible to model the behavior of every single member of society in any economic model. Therefore mixing ideas is impossible to avoid, unless you deal with robots and not humans. If you disregard the need to cater for pluralism (economic pluralism in this case) then you end up building beautiful castles on thin ice.
You effectively introduce a totalitarian system. And (a large percentage of) people hate totalitarian systems even if it's "pure" capitalism, because at some stage they'll start thinking there must be something better than that even if there isn't. (In practice there alwas is something to improve.)
So what's so special about "pure" capitalism if it's impossible to implement, because of the human desire to rebel, mix and reinvent? Don't complain about people's stupidity when they don't recognize the great advantages of pure capitalism. Try to invent something practical, even if you'll have to sacrifice a few capital ideas :). Are you ready to mix, now?
I think the idea of DEMOCRACY is much more stable in this respect because it allows for "mixing" and compromise. Unlike "pure" capitalism it's practical and feasible. And societies which have tasted it once, don't give it up so easily. Interestingly, many 100% democratic countries () whatever that means) have fairly socialist economies (not in the communist sense, but in the European social-democratic sense).

Meggido,
good let dicuss things irrationaly can you do it!
Entertaining as it may be, my point was: let's stick to facts and whatever can be considered evidence.
The bible doesn't tell us anything rational or consistent about God's emotions. The observable Universe gives us no clue. And as h_s pointed out the living creation proves that he not only created flowers and butterflies but also penguins trying to push each other off the ice because the first one in the water gets devoured, and so the the other ones are safe for a while. Hope God enjoys watching these marvels of creation too.
My stand: no evidence, probably no god, no emotions, no discussion.
But that's because I don't feel like making up fairy tales tonight. It's just bitter me - sorry if I sound harsh. I'm sure there are other folks here who enjoy having irrational discussions for the thrill of it.
Peace to you!

I understand your assumption, but the problem is that all the evidence I've mentioned in my first post clearly shows that the constructor is not like the little robots he's made in terms of emotions if we use your metaphor.
Check what the Bible says about God's emotions and you'll see that if we believe those descriptions then God comes across as a sociopath.
So, the sources of knowledge about God's emotions you've suggested (creation/bible) are either totally unreliable or they simply prove that we can't conceive of God's emotions in rational terms.
How else can we know about the nature of God's emotions if they are nothing like we know, and there is no reliable source of information about them?
You see? There's nothing to discuss here.
BTW, As I predicted... you've used the first antropomorphism by saying: "if I was God"..... There's many more to come if you want to continue with this discussion... All of them are rather useless....
Just a warning.

Heathen,
Pole--- Why do you think so many people are trying to get citizenship in the US ? It's because they heard about the freedoms we have and want to be part of it . So why not just have other governments use the same constitution and grant people the freedoms they are willing to risk their life to get by coming here? Nobody is saying to force anyone to do anything (even tho the US does do this ) it just seems that our way of life is so desireable that people should speak out in their own country to make a difference . If you don't like the idea that's fine with me , I couldn't give a rats A$$ .
Come on buddy, let's drop it. You have no idea of what life in Poland or Europe is like, and still you want to impose the American way of 280m Americans on the 500m Europeans. . "Poles go to the US because they've heard about the US freedom and they want to be part of it"?
OMG! I'm speechless. What kind of freedom do you have that we don't? Hello. Poland has been a totally free democracy since 1989. You must have heard of that, haven't you? The reason why Poles go to live in the US is $$$$.
Do you honestly think that France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Spain (and Poland) should give up their Constitutions/Common Laws and adopt the American one?
Xenophobia has it's roots in utter ignorance...
