i had a bulls eye there, as long as i still was "ideologist". meaning, that i need to start conversations about what the bible REALLY says and stuff. now that i calmed down and only throw in some arguments here and there, i'm pretty safe. because i don't feel the urge to discuss this kind of stuff with the elders anymore.

how about genetic manipulation?
by DannyBloem inwhat is your view on it?
(i do not know the dub view, but is it not important for me).
for food: ok. foor animals: ok. for humans: ok

i am pro g.m., i really don't understand why people are afraid of it. i think it might be because of some scifi movies...
and for organic versus g.m. - manipulated plants STILL are organic. you could also slowly manipulate the plant by other means, like crossing it with other plants. genetic manimulation is much faster and offers a lot more possibilities.
the claim/fact list above is pretty biased i'd say. i could also make a list like this:
claim: medicine is necessary to cure diseases.
fact: many deseases could be avoided by sufficient hygiene.
i also never understood why people are so scared about chemistry, when chemical processes are as natural as anything. -

A Challenge For FunkyDerek... My Experiences With The Afterlife
by FMZ inhey mate, don't mean to pick on you, but i know you are a good sport.
;) to all other non-believers, this thread is also for you..
it seems you always want proof and evidence of some kind of afterlife, but always have a "reasonable explanation" for any evidence put forth.

outoftheorg, that's the point: evidence, and lack thereof. a skeptic won't believe something without evidence. and he doesn't need to provide evidence that there is no evidence. it's just not there.
that would be like you telling me that an invisible apple is on the table. i'd say, no there isn't. because there's no evidence that invisible apples exist, less on my table. don't you agree that you - not me - would have to provide evidence that it is there to make it believeable?
i've had an experience about my wife previsioning the death of a sister in our congregation (including her name, btw). this DOES indeed feel very spooky, that's why i understand when people believe in that kind of things. especially because we've got all those stories in our head for watching too many ghost-movies and having been JW too long. -

light skin: so much for intelligent design...
by googlemagoogle in... and evolution, by the way.
if we were designed by an intelligent creator, why the heck do we light-skinned people get burnt to death when the sun is shining?
not very intelligent design... .

I suppose the best way is for ultra fair people to stay indoors in the summer while the sun is high or walk in the shade if it's possible.
of course you are right, greendawn, but that's really not an option when you make a trip to italy ;-)
what_Truth?
i don't know what "culture" you are talking about, but the world i live in becomes more and more tolerant and open minded. this might not apply for northern america, i don't know.

Have you considered that the dead may have a different perspective on what's important?
never thought of it, but maybe they only have the urge to communicate. must be damn boring on the other side so people you never knew would come around to contact the medium in the church you're just attending. if death by boredom is possible, this would definately be called the "second death"...
could you provide some scientific material on the priorities of dead people? ;-) -

Independence Days and Flag Customs in Other Countries
by blondie inwith the 4th of july coming up and seeing comments by some in the us, i wonder what about other countries?.
some places in the us also observe the independence day for mexico, sweden, switzerland with festivals.. what about in those countries, and canada, australia, the uk, france, chile, germany, etc, etc.. do they approach their day with the same customs, fireworks, putting out the flag.
how many people display a flag on a regular basis?.
-
googlemagoogle
living in the homecountry of california's governator. the "independence day" (last american soldier leaving the country) is just a welcome vacation, nothing more. only public buildings would have the flag, i can't think of ANYONE who'd put out a flag or celebrate the "independence day". only the politicians.
i'll never understand all that "patriotic" stuff. -

may i add another experience:
i had huge problems with my partner, we had all this fighting going on, because of this i did some stupid things like flirting with other women, which led to more problems.
then in the assembly there was a talk about flirting, there also was a talk about how to improve ones family-life. it was dead right on. described my situation. then there was even a WT article about it and it was like it would have been written for me.
this proves that the WTBTS has god's spirit and is god's visible organization. doesn't it?
i think you get my point. the keyword to keep in mind is "generic". "family" is such a wide term... now if that guy told you that "your grandfather had two dogs, one was a huge brown boxer named bello and the other one a black pitbull with white eartips named charlie" then that would be interesting. but still there would be the question: who cares about the dogs? tell me something useful, old man, not that some long gone dogs are ok...
