i live in klumbus ohio, in a neighborhood that ain't da hood but it ain't the 'burbs either.. it seems that if you are a male under 25 in my area and you don't have a 10,000 watt car stereo that shakes the whole neighborhood, well, you're nothing.. i don't get hip-hop culture.
i think that it is a screaming commentary on the cultural rot in the usa.. could someone comfort me or help explain the appeal of this pervasive sub-culture?
the depravity of it all makes me feel so hopeless sometimes.. maybe i'm a little too narrowly caucasian in my outlook.

I love 'feeling' my music more than hearing it.. but when I come home late at night the system is all the way down. Plus I took the time to silence the entire setup. Raise the windows, close the doors and you can't hear it outside. (You can feel it if you touch the car but not hear it)

jack2: It's not the same type of damage. If you constantly hear very high pitched sounds, the "hairs" on your ear drum will die and then shatter, thus making you loose a range of frequency (usually in the female vocal range, odly ) which is something that happens over time.
Where as if you suffer from damage from a sub, it'll more than likely be a tearing of your ear drum, which happens on the spot. And unless it's a very quick pop (like the one you described), the person won't leave the volume high enough for that to happen as the pain threshold will be reached way before the tearing occurs...
The whole point to this was only that a person with blaring earphones (don't get me started on those) is more likely to incure damage/hearing loss over time than that 'punk' kid blasting his sub.

have you ever had to deal with the thought that you really weren't that good of an example?
perhaps, the congregation was encouraged to pioneer or reach out for bethel service or go to seldom worked territory, etc.
and when you applied, you were told that you didn't qualify.
Will: Can I ever relate!!! The only difference I can see between me and you is that at 15 I took the plunge.... Boy was I in for a let down...

Just a few points from what I read here.....
1. It is illegal.. but for it to be enforced, the cops need to carry a dB meter so they can have proof of it, so most cops don't even bother. BUT in some towns/cities they have by-laws that say something along the lines of "sound that can be heard from more than X blocks" and usually in those cities the cops are much more active.
2. Wattage is highly overrated.. you might think that they're pumping out tens of thousands of watts but in reality, it's really not that much. For ex.: one of my friend has a 1000W amp with a 15" sub..... pushing out 145dB (please note that a Jet engine at 3m is pushing out only 140dB and that the threshold of pain is somewhere between 120-130dB). Most cars that have more than 5000W of power will actually need reinforced plexi-glass instead of the glass window just because of the sound pressure, they'd blow out... and NO ONE can stay in a car at that volume.. unless you like bleeding from your ears and throwing up all over yourself...
3. Hearing loss is mostly caused by higher frequencies... The frequencies used for 'boom boom' will just make you sick.

As a sound tech on 'permanent vacation' now, I've had my share of loud concerts and I know I lost some of my hearing.. considering I'm only 23, it kinda sucks. The thing I hate the most is when you get that "sound of silence" thing going... arrggh It drives me crazy!
one of the most unbelievable privileges that a brother could have was being a microphone handler.
elders would discuss brothers for hours and see whether or not we would allow them to mow the lawn or handle a mike.
i always felt that these brothers were doing us a favor but if they didn't get a minimum of 10 hours in per month, they were dog crap and couldn't have any privileges.
Never had to deal with them... they gave me some cheapass 'privilege' after they DF'd half the late-teens in the cong... they needed someone to fill in.

I'm not gay but all I can say is: it's good that you figured it out and are not hiding anymore. You didn't do like my 'dad'. He adopted me (married my mom) when I was 3. He had 2 girls One is now 18 the other 16. 5 years ago he decided to 'come out of the closet', left my mom and told her that he married her to hide the fact that he was gay and was picturing guys while having sex with her. Talk about a f'ed up family.
I'm just glad that you won't go destroying someone else's life and that you're making yourself happy!

as i was growing up,i noticed the dubs at assemblys would clap at the slightest provocation.it looked like a beach full of seals.as soon as a few started,the rest would join in.for some it looked like they just woke up and figured they should start clapping so no one would know they fell asleep.most just looked like seals clapping for a fish.kids notice funny things.did any of you notice dub mass behaviour you found funny...outlaw .

My mom asked me to relay this 'story' on over.
A while back, elders in our congregation heard that in other circonscriptions, at the end of assemblies, the audience would all applaude so they figured they'd be good dubs and show that our circ could do the same. So they asked this 'brother' to start clapping after the prayer. Well this dub was too shy to do it, so he asked my dad to do it for him. My dad, being the good dub that he was accepted... thing is... he didn't understand properly. Come the end of the assembly... "brother prayer guy" comes on the podium... gets ready... and "clap, clap, clap, clap, clap, clap"... my father starts and don't stop... Gets the whole circ going!! Well let me tell you that the elders weren't too happy with the first dub, gave him a good earful thinking it was him that did it. Then he comes back to my dad and relayed all the sh*t on to him. My dad responded: "Next time, do your own clapping".
