this is the jerusalem council of faithful jewish christians addressing what obstacles gentile converts must hurdle to be accepted by them.
(note: this statement is a paraphrase of a much earlier law of the sons of noah.).
acts 15: "it is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the gentiles who are turning to god" (v. 19).
Below is the EASY version of the above:
A. First, there was NO law.
Each person in this world did what was right in their own eyes.
B. Next, there was the (Noah's Day) destruction by the Flood. In its aftermath, the Laws of the Sons of Noah became the official standard of Righteous Man.
C. Finally, there arrived the Law of Moses given to Israel alone. The Law of Moses divided the world in Gentiles and Jews.
_______________
It is well known that the Jewish faith does not seek to make converts, and so it is generally supposed that since the Jewish people do not want to make other people into Jews, they are happy just to be left alone. The world is often very surprised to discover that the Jewish faith includes a complete provision for all non-Jews, regardless of race, social class or national origin, perfectly attuned to their needs, and deriving from the same source in Divine revelation through the prophecy of Moses, without any intermediary whatsoever. Only the true universal faith of the Jews regularly offers something to those who are not its members, and this is its sign of authenticity.
This provision is known as the Noachide Laws
That's the Old Testament.
___________

In the New Testament, there are Jews and there are Gentiles once again. Jesus fulfilled the O.T. as a requirement for a relationship with Jehovah and Jews are released from the Law as a binding covenant.
Note: Jews were "free agents" who could choose to become Jesus-like or not.
Jews now became divided into:
1. Those who would accept Jesus (and)
2. Those who would not. (Those who DID accept Jesus as Christ were Messianic Jews.)
______
Among Messianic Jews who accepted Jesus, there were: those who just couldn't stop observing the Law (out of habit or a sense of superiority and purity.)
A. Those who just wouldn't stop observing the Law (out of habit or a sense of superiority and purity.)
B. Those who could let go and give up the traditions and become a new kind of Jew.
The Apostle Paul began evangelizing Gentiles into congregations already filled with Messianic Jews. This created a weird mixture of two natural enemies trying to get along and experience unity and solidarity.
________
The clash between ritualistic, traditional Jesus-believing Jews and the Gentile converts caused problems.
Paul confronted the (not) Governing Body in Jerusalem about this problem.
The Jerusalem Council decided Gentiles only had to observe the already-existing Laws of the Sons of Noah. This is what was quoted in Acts 15.
Instead--the word Blood means (in context) BLOODSHED, i.e. Murder.
this is the jerusalem council of faithful jewish christians addressing what obstacles gentile converts must hurdle to be accepted by them.
(note: this statement is a paraphrase of a much earlier law of the sons of noah.).
acts 15: "it is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the gentiles who are turning to god" (v. 19).
This is the Jerusalem Council of faithful Jewish Christians addressing what obstacles Gentile converts must hurdle to be accepted by them. (Note: this statement is a paraphrase of a much earlier Law of the Sons of Noah.)
Acts 15: "It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God" (v. 19). "Instead, we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood" (v. 20).
If there is anything in the Law that the NT instructs Christians to follow, this is it. This statement includes all the things mentioned in the preceding verses on how you should treat your neighbor (e.g. do not hate your neighbor, do not take vengeance on your neighbor, do not bear false witness against your neighbor, etc.).
One of these things is the following: "You shall not jeopardize your neighbor's life" (Leviticus 19:16). In Hebrew, this is more literally, "You shall not stand beside your neighbor's blood".
Here, not taking action that would save another person's life is viewed as showing disregard for blood.
This is how the rabbis understood the passage:
"How do we know that if we see someone drowning in the river, or a wild beast dragging someone off, or bandits attacking someone, we must try to save the person? Because it is said, 'You shall not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor' " (Sanhedrin 73a).
It only remains to focus and magnify the last phrase of that scripture concerning the word :BLOOD.
The Book of Acts existed in several versions.
To some scribes, the conclusion the apostolic council reached appeared strange, and they changed it to make it appear more correct. In the so-called Western texts, consequently, the apostles reached a different conclusion:
"(b) The Western text omits ‘what is strangled’ and adds a negative form of the Golden Rule in 15.20 and 29. . . . Concerning (b), it is obvious that the threefold prohibition . . . refers to moral injunctions to refrain from idolatry, unchastity and blood-shedding (or murder), to which is added the negative Golden Rule." 1
The "western texts" were those used by a significant number of those early Christian writers, and these texts had already replaced the purely ritual rules in the original description of the Apostolic Council with moral rules.
Obviously, then, these later copyists were not aware of the background of the blood prohibition and struggled to understand the text.
_____________________________
To make it more acceptable, they "corrected" the text to be a list of three moral laws: idolatry, unchastity, and murder. And hardly anyone will deny that these rules apply to all Christians! No wonder, then, that the early Christian writers argued that the apostolic council still applied.
_____________________________
Concerning these texts, we read:
"Of the remaining types of texts which Westcott and Hort isolated, the so-called Western Type is both ancient and widespread. . . . Its date of origin must have been extremely early, perhaps before the middle of the second century. Marcion, Tatian, Justin, Irenaeus, Hippolytus, Tertullian and Cyprian all made use to a greater or less extent of a Western form of text."
The Law of the Sons of Noah, (Noahide laws) applied to every person descended from Noah who wished to please God. Later, Jews under the law of Moses used these Noahide Laws to instruct Gentile converts. In these laws the use of the word "blood" referred to murder, the shedding of blood in killing another human.
And that is precisely the legal basis for Jesus' statement elsewhere that "it is lawful ... to save life rather than to destroy it" (Mark 3:4, Luke 6:9).
Indeed, the Talmud instructs that almost any commandment, such as the Sabbath, can be relaxed if life is at stake (e.g. the rabbinic principle of dwchyn 't h-shbt "superseding the Sabbath"), cf. b. Shabbat 131a, b. Sukkah 43a,m. Pesah 6:1-2, b. Sanhedrin 74a, m. Yoma 8:6, b. Yoma 85a.
Special Note:
It's this principle that is missing in the Society's own "law on blood." for them it is more important to observe a commandment than to save a life. This demand runs entirely against Leviticus 19:16-18. To show true love for one's neighbor, one must not stand by when a person's life -- a person's own blood -- is endangered. A person should do what can be done to save this person's life.
The Society, by instructing others to ignore this and refuse life-saving measures, is guilty precisely of standing beside their neighbor's blood.
Jesus, as a Jew, was under the Law of Moses. Jesus, as the exemplar of God's perfect will, demonstrated the purpose of the Law in his ministry on Earth.
Several times Jesus was seen breaking the law of the Sabbath. The Pharisees were outraged. Jesus healed people on the Sabbath--he must be put to death!
Jesus explained to the Pharisees the purpose and intent of the Law by asking them a question:
LUKE: 6:
6
On another Sabbath, he went into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
7
The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the Sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.
8
But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, "Come up and stand before us." And he rose and stood there.
9
Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to destroy it?"
10
Looking around at them all, he then said to him, "Stretch out your hand." He did so and his hand was restored.
11
But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.
Clearly, Jesus demonstrated the over-riding principle was the precious saving of life even if it meant superficially breaking the Law!
If this applies to Sabbath breaking to bring about healing and preserving of life:
WHY WOULDN'T IT APPLY TO BLOOD as well?
LIFE is more precious than law.
my best buddy is gone.
i attended his funeral this morning.. on thursday evening, i went to the body "viewing" and it was "family only.
" i am part of the family (through marriage) so, i was there.. i was welcomed with joy and enthusiasm like a long lost (prodigal) sheep.
This would be much easier if I could make it black or white. I could love whom I love and hate the rest. But the ones I hate are lovable and the lovable ones have an ugly, cold side waiting to be turned my way. I trust none.
I could love whom I love and hate the rest. But ones I hate are lovable and lovable ones have indifference waiting to be turned my way. So, I trust none.
I see damaged souls twisted this way and that by fear and absolute certainty. Monstrous egos and admirable humility are crammed into them, choc a bloc.
If I cannot sort them easily, how can they, trapped within themselves, find the tie that binds to work the knot toward freedom?
I am saddened while gladdened. I'm beguiled and off put.
I recall camaraderie, handshakes, back patting and smug assuredness. But I cringe at the duplicity and inclination to bully and dismiss with equal ease.
Then the clouds part and the light pours in. Those twisted souls once were human and are human no more. Automatons they are. Doll's eyes hide unthinking obedience in the task they work for their masters.
These people frighten me; half-smiles half-crooked like a picture wire on a nail hung wonky. They'd be as likely to die for me as to see me dead; programmed as they are.
These are Pod people and there are infestations in their gathering. There is plotting and insidious chicanery afoot. Should I run to escape them or are there more in the direction I end up?
These last few days have been an endless spool of nightmares unthreading like a movie reel; a double-feature of death and horror on display. I was one of them. They had me once inside their cold machine. They've tasted my blood. My bitterness never goes away.
I turned that blind corner and the dark flytrap opened. Sweet nectar glistened in my eyes. For an urgent moment, I could smell the scent as I approached.
The tingle in my spine and the twitching of my thumbs brought the old familiar feeling back to mind. This is not my world and I'll never risk it all again on the spin of their illusory roulette. A game for fools; those who win only win regret.
my best buddy is gone.

Well, it is over. My best Buddy is gone. I attended his funeral this morning.
On Thursday evening, I went to the body "Viewing" and it was "family only." I am part of the family (through marriage) so, I was there.
I was welcomed with joy and enthusiasm like a long lost (Prodigal) sheep. I practically grew up with these folks and have known them either since my teens or shortly thereafter.
I came away from THAT lighter than air and feeling pretty good.
I did break down emotionally seeing my lifelong friend in that coffin. But frankly, I desperately needed that cry. It has been two years since he cut me off (after 34 years of continued friendship after I had been DF'd). So, I've had to adjust to "being dead to him."
His sudden death made no sense to my subconscious mind. The corpse pretty much sorted that one out.
As a result of feeling a part of people's lives again (even under heartbreaking circumstance) without awkward silence on their part (I was hugged, kissed, etc.) I could let my iron protective shield down and see them as human beings once more.
You have no idea HOW WONDERFUL that felt!
_______________-
Today, all the strangers (to me) from Johnny's Jehovah's Witness world were there.
It struck me immediately!
There is a definite dreary depression behind the eyes of the JW's. Of course, I might be projecting this on them myself--but I sincerely doubt it. The people who are my age or a little younger look horribly depleted in spirit, energy, and self-confidence. . . depressed would be the word.
Most have put on too much weight, are pallid, out of shape, slightly frail and definitely wizened!
Ouch!
Am I trying to be nasty? Please don't get that impression from me! I love these folks. I don't want to say anything insulting at all.
All the young people look like trapped animals who just don't belong and don't really want to belong. The Elders have that car salesman air about them and tend to dress badly. Not shabby, mind you, just without taste!
The only friendliness I found was Johnny's kids, who are now in their 30's and 40's.
The attendants had the personalities of car wash personnel.
_________________
I won't go into all the details. I got my feelings hurt rather badly and it's my fault for taking it all to heart.
The fellow who gave the eulogy introduced himself as "Johnny's best friend" and then went on to say, "Everybody who knew Johnny thought they were his best friend." Well, triple bullshit!
Then, a few short anecdotes were given and they were WRONG in the little details I ALONE knew. Yeah, if I sound jealous--I am. I could have delivered one hell of a going away talk and poor Johnny was stuck with these clowns who think they knew him!
The Funeral (religious sales pitch) talk turned my stomach because it was such a typical Hallmark card of evangelizing poo-poo. My skin crawled.
Honest to God, I felt like I was in an asylum filled with people condemned to evaporating life possibilities trying to sell the secret to happiness without having known it themselves!
I won't go on and on about it.
I loved Johnny, I love his widow and kids. He came from a truly kind and amazing family. Whatever denomination he might have embraced--he would have been the same person--except he could have made something great out of himself and his life.
The rest of those people are mannikins with painted expressions. They have the Governing Body's cold, sweaty hands up their ass moving their jaw like a ventriloquist's dummy.
Their attitude and deportment are that of torture survivors hanging in and hanging on to whatever is left.
There is an invisible countdown clock inside their heart. They crave the oblivion of the grave to release them from that ponderous yoke of endless, rat wheel motion--running in place, getting nowhere, with the dagger of Armageddon hanging above them every second of life.
I am so glad I'm not in the clutches of this desperate delusion any longer. Life is slow poison. I am free of them--except in the center of my soul where there is a hole just about the size of Johnny Santa Cruz. That man, that life, that love has dissolved like a cube of sugar in sour lemonade, then pissed away on a dream and a false hope.
I no longer have any reason at all to be anyplace where JW's gather. Johnny was the last excuse. He can't snap out of it now. He can't change his mind. He can't call me on the phone and say--"Hey, I just woke up--let's talk!"
I'll shake off this torpid malaise and walk around in the sunshine this afternoon and keep my eyes on the horizon where death awaits. At least, there won't be any JW's at MY funeral. That is a very good thing indeed--only people who truly, madly, deeply love me for who I really am.
I was in a field of plastic flowers today and I could not stand the dreary falseness of it all. I mean, to live your life as a fake thing is sad and maddening.

The ease with which JW's accept silly and / or improbable End Times teachings is something I ponder endlessly.
Treating the subject as a set of facts is the first mistake.
Treating JW's as a set of persons vouchsafed divine authority to teach is the 2nd mistake
Finding plausible the arbitrary cut and paste cherry-picked mosaic of proof provided by Watchtower scholars is the final error.
I'd guess the preponderance of those who accept all the above could not sit down and answer basic questions about the subject.

Peddling God’s Timetable: the Men Who Failed
James Ussher (1581-1656)
Your name is Ussher – James Ussher – and you are the Archbishop of all of Ireland.
You are living in the 1600s and are obsessive-compulsive when it comes to speculative ideas. You are convinced that you alone have the intellect to figure exact dates of all the major events in the Bible actually. Your critics whisper to each other that your ego is bigger than your credentials for declaring out loud that you, and you alone – know the exact day and time of Adam’s creation!
____________
Nightfall preceding Sunday, 23 October 4004 B.C.
Is that specific enough for all of you non-geniuses?
______________
You – James Ussher – become Professor of Theological Controversies at Trinity College and a Bachelor of Divinity in 1607. A whole string of degrees follow your name. You speak so many languages it is difficult for even you to keep count. You live in very turbulent times – both politically and religiously – and yet your crowning achievement and eventual fame will be the result of your years spent studying CHRONOLOGY as it relates to the Old Testament and the writings of Early Church fathers.
As a “Young Earth Creationist” living 200 years before Charles Darwin, you encounter little in the way of intellectual opposition to your premises. After all, no less a scientist and genius than Sir Isaac Newton (1648-1727) would himself attempt a similar effort.
Your computations for actual fixed dates in secular history during the eras of Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar would serve as your references toward other events to be dated in scripture.
(As we shall see, 300 years later Frederick Franz – a far less distinguished “scholar” than Bishop Ussher – would use the same methodology for his own eccentric chronology).
What was the biggest problem you faced, Bishop Ussher? Perhaps it was the fact that available ancient texts were in complete disagreement about the length of time between events in the Bible!
So, eeny, meeny, miney, moe! You, Professor Ussher, chose to depend exclusively on the Masoretic texts and ignored everything else. How did you balance all that you knew about ancient history, including the rise of the Persians, Greeks, and Romans, as well as your expertise in the Bible, biblical languages, astronomy, ancient calendars and chronology?
How indeed?
You simply claimed success--you declared yourself to be right!
And that was that. With your reputation for such brilliance–who could criticize you or nay-say your pronouncements?
The most important thing to a genius with OCD who thinks he has the intellect to pin down the impossible, is to not leave anything out. At age 75, as you lay on your deathbed suffering from internal bleeding, what would become your last words?
“O Lord forgive me, especially my sins of omission.”
Most men want forgiveness for the errors they have made. Most, but no – not you!
Who was the intellectual heir to Ussher and his delusions of grandeur?
Frederick William Franz (1893-1992)
Born in Covington, Ky., he developed an interest in the Bible at an early age and entered the University of Cincinnati intending to become a Presbyterian preacher. There he studied biblical and classical Greek and Latin.
Introduced by a brother to the teachings of the International Bible Students, as the Witnesses were then called, Mr. Franz was ordained as a minister of the faith in Chicago in 1913. Franz possessed photographic memory and a passion for Bible Chronology, adapting himself to various methods and styles of those who had unsuccessfully blazed a trail before him. William Miller and subsequent Adventist, Age to Come Millennialists as well as Pastor C.T. Russell laid the groundwork for the stunt Fred Franz will pull later in life. Let it be known, Fred Franz was conscious of the failure of Pastor Russell’s 1914 predictions of Armageddon and later himself participated in successor J.F. Rutherford’s asinine prediction for 1925. But, Franz was not a man to be discouraged by absolute disproof. He felt he was closing in on the combination to God’s safety deposit box where the sacred secret of The End was kept! Perhaps 1925 was one Jubilee short of the magic date. . .
During a speech in Australia in 1975 the Watchtower Society’s vice-president, Frederick Franz, went so far as to name a precise date—September 5, 1975—as the date of the “end of the present wicked system.” [George D. Chryssides, Historical Dictionary of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Scarecrow Press, 2008, pg lx.] (Mind you, Fred Franz had the hubris to declare Archbishop Ussher’s chronology to be in error and publicly corrected him!)
Fred Franz declared that Adam was created sometime in the fall of 4026 B.C.E.
Nothing of any major significance happened in the early fall of 1975. The following year (1976), The Watchtower advised those Jehovah’s Witnesses who had been “disappointed” by the failure of the predictions for 1975 to adjust their viewpoint – because their understanding had been “based on wrong premises.” [“A Solid Basis for Confidence,” Watchtower, July 15, 1976, page 441.] In other words, Franz had published spurious data, but it was the faithful members who had erred. How? By believing the lying bastard!
What exactly were those “WRONG PREMISES”?
Precisely like Archbishop James Ussher, Fred Franz slavishly followed his own unique line of reasoning and methodology. The operative word to describe Franz is HUBRIS!
“Hubris= pride or arrogance. Hubris often indicates a loss of contact with reality and an overestimation of one’s own competence or capabilities, especially when the person exhibiting it is in a position of power.” – Wikipedia
It is difficult, if not impossible, to get active Jehovah’s Witnesses to consider disproof pointed at their leaders because they have “mental tripwires” programmed in their brains. For Witnesses, the Watchtower’s Governing Body is sacrosanct as a sacred cow. To even suggest the Governing Body’s pronouncements are awry will trigger a psychological chain-reaction in Jehovah’s Witnesses that starts with them identifying YOU as their enemy.
Frederick Franz got away with so much nonsense because nobody in the organization was allowed to think a critical thought about him. “Free thought” is possible only if you are aware and assured that you will not be condemned.
One day I met a member of what was once called the “International Bible Students Association.” He and his son lived in a trailer park. He used his own funds to pay for cable access so that he could tell about the “Divine Plan of the Ages” on TV.
I sat at his kitchen table as he stood before a giant “Dispensation Chart” – the very same one once used by Charles Taze Russell. He used it to explain “Jehovah’s plan” for me and all mankind. I remember thinking it seemed odd that all the dates on that chart had been figured out with such precision and confidence without anybody ever going to college, passing a seminary examination, or earning a degree!
Now I realize they had been using the very same chronology conceived by Bishop James Ussher. I’m sure that the Anglican scholar would have considered their use of his handiwork as being quite devilish and diabolical.
Ussher and Franz: The Fallacies Behind Their Calculations
We now know that Frederick Franz recreated that same chart and simply changed whatever details that didn’t match his own ideas. All to little effect, that is, other than to turn the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ world upside down in the 1970s with his false predictions and embarrassing nonsense!
We know that stories found in the Bible were handed down from one generation to another verbally, making the aspect of accuracy for any ancient date an impossibility to calculate with any hope of reliability. My understanding is that there are significant disagreements between manuscript families.
They all have inconsistencies involving the reigns of kings, critical intervals, and the order of events.
The Bible actually contains no dates at all. So-called biblical chronology (regarding events taken for granted by the good Bishop) actually vary from text to text among the many variants available to scholars.
Since not a single original autograph text exists--it is impossible to look to an exemplar to correct errors which have crept in.
Overriding all of those issues are the practical considerations of THE VARIOUS CALENDAR SYSTEMS used in each geographic and cultural region. Hundreds, if not thousands, of differing systems of counting dates are found through over long spans of time covered by the “Old Testament.”
Fred Franz tried to gimmick up his guesswork by announcing that he had determined absolute dates for the “Old” and “New Testaments.” We now know that it was all just “stuff and nonsense.”
Bishop Ussher & Brother Franz
You can read the opening chapters of Matthew and look at its proffered time intervals for its generation count. If you look close, you will find it doesn’t match the history of those generations given in the Old Testament. If a chronology is not scientific, historical – or even feasible to use for determining the exact time when something happened – then how can anyone use the Old Testament to calculate when something else (like “Armageddon”) is going to happen thousands of years later?
Yes, James Ussher and Fred Franz were very smart crackpots who somehow managed to fool generations of sincere Christians who looked to them for answers about the Bible.
Ussher did far far less harm than his intellectual heir, Fred Franz. Franz convinced millions of people around the world they should fear destruction from Almighty God for the simple reason--only by becoming a member of Franz’s religion, Jehovah’s Witnesses, would his avenging deity spare them.
Are Jehovah’s Witnesses today aware of any of this? Few, but their mouth is tightly sealed lest they be charged with thought crimes leading to shunning and banishment.
What is the lesson to be learned from Archbishop Ussher, Fred Franz, Judge Rutherford, Pastor Russell and William Miller?
Allowing delusional authoritarians to persuade you to become fearful of dying based on their private guesswork under the guise of Divine Authority is a sure way to waste your time, your resources, and your life.
Speaking as one who succumbed to such a fate--I must own the consequences, but I will also ring the alarm bell and mark this organization for what it is and always has been: A FALSE PROPHET.
Be warned!
