sunday is my 76th birthday and i know that you want to know how it "feels" to have outlived my usefulness, to have lost my natural beauty (being reduced to wrinkles and flab), and constantly walking into a room not knowing why i'm there.

you also are curious as to how i can continue to find a reason to live since none of my kids think my opinions have any possible value, most of my facebooks friends i wouldn't recognize if i tripped over them on my way into starbucks, and my monthly expenditure on bird treats exceeds u.s. spending on the military.

Well, last night I was on the phone for at least an hour with my JW long-time friend from
Federal Prison days who is an I.T. security programmer and the target audience for
my opening paragraph.
We got more than halfway through it before he had to go to bed.
He's taking it
pretty well - but - I designed it that way. The real test is the bottom half.

Can't wait for THAT discussion.

sykes was one-of-a-kind in the pentecostal movement, but he was considered quite a maverick who went his own way with heretical teachings repugnant to the pentecostal faith.. joshua sykes’ congregation was integrated, unlike pastor russell’s public speeches/sermons where blacks and whites both could attend, but only in separate sections--sykes's members were sitting side by side in the pentecostal church.

this was considered dangerous and inflammatory at the time.. pentecostal preacher joshua sykes practiced racial and gender "integration" as early as 1908 -- having both african-american and female assistant preachers, staffers, and members.

Finally, you simply cannot imagine how I've managed to survive a Texas grade school education, serving as an inmate in a Federal prison, and twenty years in a religious cult so strict they don't even celebrate Thanksgiving...OR

how I lived through 4 divorces, 7 kids, 5 grandkids, and the Finale of LOST, without losing my mind.

The answer is simple.

I have a core philosophy.

I maintain an absurdist point of view.

I'm tuned to the ridiculous in life.

I almost always refuse to do what I'm told is "best" for me.

I'm skeptical of ALL authority.

I prefer out-of-doors to indoors.

I crave sunshine, any cat anyplace anytime over a dog - but I love dogs -
I just can't tolerate being worshipped by one.

I secretly admire women who find me impossible. I am.

I have the best FRIENDS (true friends) on the planet although

I try to remain hidden like a hermit in a cabin in the wilderness writing my
Manifesto in squirrel's blood on a parchment.

I love writing. Poems, stories, Essays, liner notes, articles -
NOBODY READS THEM anyway!

I write music nobody wants to hear because well, I MUST.

I Love Chess but am a patzer. (Dumb-ass).

I'm incredibly curious about ALMOST everything except the things you are interested in
and insist on telling me about it.

I am going to be 76 tomorrow because my life is very, very spartan, simple, and detached from civilization.

and a few discussion groups (who'd wish me dead) are my only interface with humanity.

My health is stupefyingly perfect. I don't know why, really.

I drink a little alcohol every damn day of the year just before bedtime. I eat meat.
I don't take pills or medicine. I have no aches or pains. I don't seem to get colds or flu.

I don't know whom I loathe more: politicians or political opinions in the mouth of friends.
I try to focus on things that aren't corrupt beyond redemption.

Those aren't really your questions. I kid myself.

Just know this one thing.

I'd rather be a smartass than not be.

It's in my DNA.

Oh - and P.S. "Stop texting me adverts for erectile dysfunction.

I started an erectile dysfunction club for guys that didn't work out. It flopped and nobody came."

Two points I'd like to raise.

1. J.F. Rutherford was an attorney who put himself through law school with a strenuous will toward an ambition to get off the family farm and make something of himself. The only way his Papa would let him do that was if Joe paid for a farmhand replacement, and this he did. He sold encyclopedias door to door - as did I when I was a teenager. You have to develop a thick skin, smooth persuasive eloquence as well as a love of reading.
Rutherford was befriended by a boozy Judge who let Joe sub for him now and then. Until then, Joe had become proficient as a court stenographer. Joe's rapid skill at shorthand (if you aren't my age, 76, you won't even know what shorthand is :)

The choice of Jehovah's WITNESS as a NAME is a legal choice. Sort of...it tastes of "law".
The strongest testimony as far as a jury is concerned, is testimony by an eyewitness. Secondarily, his Circuit and District judiciary experience is also reflected in the words "Circuit and District" assembly language.

J.F. Rutherford's alliance with Fred Franz was like Lennon and McCartney writing songs together.
Franz was NOT a Rhodes scholar but one of his teachers wanted him to "try out" for candidacy.
Franz was a NERD and obsessive/compulsive. He was like an ox mentally; you set him to a task and he ground away at it and produced plenty of wheat and chaff for you.
In other words, Rutherford wrote the Theology outline and Franz created the foundation scriptures and zig-zag "reasoning" to achieve the appearance of solid and sound theology.

2. Every single step taken by Russell and Rutherford demonstrates UNORIGiNALITY of invention, while at the same time demonstrating a GENIUS for self-promotion and -if not plagiarism of others' ideas and crackpot notions - then the cleverness to promote wacky wonky crackpot schemes as beautiful hidden secrets of God himself.
Russell wasted a (today's equivalent) seven million dollars personal fortune publishing silly crap dressed up like encyclopedic Bible Truth and revealed wisdom. Rutherford drove the WTS to the edge of bankruptcy, even selling off assets while the Board of Directors and himself languished in Federal prison. Lucky bastard that he was, when released from prison on a Writ of Error, he (my opinion) saw it as direct release at the hand of Jehovah, causing him to double down fearlessly (bulletproofed) attacking like a paranoid, his ENEMIES who were everywhere.

Here is the result:

Frederick Franz was never a Rhodes scholar. Jehovah's Witnesses often say that he was because of his impressive knowledge in biblical and historical topics. Whatever happened to Marvin Shilmer?

"marvin", who i understand is a pseudonym, has an excellent blog whose most recent post was last september.

his most recent contribution to wikipedia, where he made very valuable contributions, was march 2013.. i have emailed him wondering if he's ok, but haven't had a response.

anyone know if he's ok or what the deal is?.

If you count up all the writing done in the first 100 years of this religion, then pause and consider
how WRONG it all was (by current standards), it's FLABBERGASTING HOW MANY PEOPLE WASTED
THEIR TIME thinking it was "Truth".
Sure - they counted their hours - but their hours didn't count.

They, in effect, are like crooks passing counterfeit money. It looks real but there is nothing to back it up.
Chasing their - (not tail) but TALE around in circles and coughing up changes right and left but
thinking of it as PROGRESS is flat-out stupid.
