  after 6 years, maybe looking for a new church/religion..

  any suggestions, just thinking that my spiritual person is dying and need to feed her:).

  i am terrified of churches, etc, due to my jw time,,,so any input would be well received from my friends here.

  how do you define 'spirituality'? is it a church/religion or is it something else?

  i don't think i'll ever affiliate myself with one specific denomination again but i feel like i am a more spiritual person now than i have ever been. i don't know what it is, but i feel something powerful when i see a sunset or hear a certain song (it could be any song). whatever it is, it's bigger and moves me more than anything a preacher could ever put into words.

  i read a book on zen and it was pretty cool too. i don't consider myself a buddhist but i love their teaching that after you "get buddhism" you don't really consider yourself a buddhist anymore. they feel that true spirituality/enlightment can't be classified under any label. you just gotta love a religion that teaches that the religion itself is not necessary in the end.

  anyone read SURVIVOR by chuck palahniuk?

  yeah, i'm not sure how to spell his last name.

  he's the guy that wrote fight club.. i read this book a while ago and was amazed at the way he describes cult life and especially post-cult life.

  the story is about a guy that left a cult and the premise is he's the only left on a plane that is almost out of gas and he's telling his life story into the plane's black box so that something will be left after he's gone (i thought that was a great idea for a book).. i was sure chuck palah...whatever-his-name-is used to be a jw.

  his main characters almost always have some sort of f-ed up notion in their heads, or are totally crazy.

  yeah, but somehow that makes them more normal. or maybe i just need to up my meds

  have you seen that commercial for dunkin donuts where Survivor is in some guys bedroom in the morning and they're all like, "ROY! ROY, ROY, ROY! ROY, ROY ROOOOOYY!"

  yeah, CHOKE was super good (but nasty). i've read all of his but i think SURVIVOR was my favorite. LULLABY was pretty good too.

  all of his books are like reading a movie. and, my...how i do like movies.

  his books are kind of out there but super easy reads. he has one hell of an imagination.

  i read this book a while ago and was amazed at the way he describes cult life and especially post-cult life. the story is about a guy that left a cult and the premise is he's the only left on a plane that is almost out of gas and he's telling his life story into the plane's black box so that something will be left after he's gone (i thought that was a great idea for a book).

  i was sure chuck palah...whatever-his-name-is used to be a JW. he had to be. the emotions and viewpoint the main character has are way too familiar. i don't know that he ever was one, but it's a good book in any case.

  you should read it in between reading all those heavy, serious textbooks you usually read...yeah, i'm talking to you...you know who you are.

  Do your acquaintances know you?re a JW (or former witness)?

  i remember deliberately not telling people when i was growing up, and cringing when my mom made an effort to tell my teachers.

  although i no longer hide it, there are still people i consider friends who do not know i grew up jw.

  sometimes it?s just that the subject of religion does not come up often, and when it does, it would be weird to say something now after i?ve known someone for years and have never mentioned it.

  i figure, am I personally that concerned about what religion people i meet used to be affiliated with? i really couldn't care less (unless it's bothering them or they have some problems because of it). "they" (whoever this "they" is...) probably also don't care what religion you used to be.

  my girlfriend's family didn't care what religion my family is until they realized that i was having difficulties in my life because of it. then they were nothing but concerned. in any case, they certainly were not judgmental when they found out (well, not judgmental of me anyway...). they clearly felt sympathy for what i am going through and they had some very well chosen words for some of the prctices the organization imposes upon the rank and file.

  in any case, how can you be embarrassed about being mentally and physically controlled and (some may argue) "brainwashed"? i guess it's similiar to feelings of guilt after being raped.

  have you done things BECAUSE they were condemned by the WTS?

  hey guys,.

  since leaving, has anyone done anything specifically because it was condemned by the society?.

  - i went and got a tattoo (i had wanted one anyway, but really enjoyed it since it was a no-no...i'm getting a big'n next week...).

  When I was a JW and they controlled my life, there may have been minor things I did just to irk others, like leaving the parking lot with the heavy metal music blairing.

  that's some good stuff...i thought this was just my idea.

  i agree that doing things simply out of spite are certainly not productive or positive...but sometimes they can be fun (maybe more than "sometimes"...).
