I"m on, but I rarely use it. I'm also unhappy about loss of privacy.
However, I've recently become hooked on angry birds, and I can't access the Star Wars version on my phone (it's an older model and I can't get it to update), so I've gone back onto Facebook so I can play the online Star Wars version. What a time waster!

After several years of doing the overboard xmas make-up thing a la Finally Awake's thread: /http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/members/private/243965/1/I-think-I-went-overboard-LOL, we now try to set limits, the main one being that gifts are primarily for the grandkids. But my daughters each always get me something and vice-versa.
This year I got a luxurious, super-comfy new computer chair, a sweater, two beautiful scarves (one from Spain), several pairs of wild earrings, and lots of kisses and hugs and I love you's. It was a very nice xmas.

How Science has advanced since the Victorian Era...
by ziddina inbuttonhooks, steam-run horseless carriages, corsets, steamships, gaslight streetlights, wax candles..... these things were considered the 'latest' in "modern conveniences" during the victorian era.. the victorian era also ushered in some exciting new scientific discoveries and inventions - uranium, x-rays, electric telegraphs, bicycles, and a good part of the industrial revolution.. of course, nowadays we wouldn't dream of using buttonhooks to 'button up' our shoes, nor would we even consider having a steam-powered "horseless carriage" in our garage.. we wouldn't allow a dentist to work on us using 19th-century tools or techniques, nor would we trust a psychologist who insisted on using "phrenology" to determine why we have mood swings or depressions....

Thanks for your kind comments, Brizzy and Jgnat. I think she'll be okay, but she will have to go for physiotherapy. She's in a lot of pain. We were both surprised at how serious the injury actually turned out to be. Falls scare me - they can be really dangerous at any age.

Yeah, the maggot thing kinda freaks me out, too. But apparently they are amazing at debriding dead tissue and cleaning wounds that have not responded to antibiotics. There is a research and education centre devoted to leech, maggot, and other similar therapies. Quite fascinating. Both creatures have now been classified as live medical devices. http://www.bterfoundation.org/
If push came to shove, I guess I could tolerate maggots if it meant a limb could be saved from amputation. It would have to be pretty drastic, though.
PS, Zid - I'm only getting caught up on this thread tonight. I spent half the day in emerg with one of my daughters who fell down the stairs and seriously damaged her shoulder. While waiting I couldn't help but think of how medical treatment has advanced even over just the past few years. It's like scientific knowledge has suddenly fast-tracked.

Do You Take Flu Shots?
by minimus ini never have.
i seldom get the "flu" and if i do, it usually happens after everyone else has gotten it.. i know of many people who regularly get the flu shot and they seem to always still get sick..

I'm torn on the issue. I've had the flu shot in previous years, but I'm leery of vaccinations in general, since my little brother almost died from one when he was just a baby.
Some recent Canadian research indicates the flu shot can make you more susceptible to getting another flu strain in subsequent years. It makes me a bit hesitant http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2012/09/10/flu-shot-pandemic.html (don't know why the link button will not activate for me!)
I did get the flu a month or so back, likely the same thing whahappened had - one of the worst illnesses ever.

Phrenology might have been misguided, but it did lead to more advanced discoveries in psychology. Which is what I also love about science. Scientists take weird bizarre ideas and test them. If they stand up to the test, they can be explored further. Scientists recognize if there is something of value, and they are not afraid to adjust their viewpoint. Science does not cling to an idea simply because it was written in some old book.
Now, Nicola Tesla - there's a scientist! Mainstreamers didn't recognize his genius. When I was a kid my dad built a Tesla coil. He spent hours and hours wrapping copper around a post, then he entertained us (and all the neighbourhood) with his "lightening machine." (I still wonder if it contributed to his and my mom's cancer diagnoses). I tried to write an essay about Tesla at school at the time, but could find absolutely nothing in the libraries about him. That's another way science has advanced - we now have the Internet, we now have shared knowledge. I was so thrilled to discover the truth about Tesla on the Internet as an adult. It's all out there now - the good, the bad, the mistakes, the journey.
p.s., Brizzy - leeches are still actually used among more progressive healers. They have an amazing ability to reduce swelling and promote healing. It's interesting how so many of these traditional forms of healing have not been discounted completely and are now being used to great effect.
