Ignoring holidays due to their pagan roots always sounded retarded to me. Yesterday I'm doing a job at an investment firm. The owner says "Have a happy easter Looking!", and I said "Happy Easter Owner!". Why did I say that without hesitating? Because the man was being friendly and thoughtful. Hell maybe he was a pagan, I don't know. But he was being genuinely nice. Whether I ever "celebrate" or not? Who knows, I'm still "active" after all.
Pagan origins...whatever JW's...eff you and your pyramids.

Living as a former JW
by yknot inwhile i personally have not yet made this jump (final meetings will be first week of june).
i hear many wishing me "happy easter" i wonder how many of you have adjusted?.
i don't think i can unlearn that most holidays are "pagan", after all even the history channel confirms this fact.

Which is More Important: Doctrinal Correctness or Unity?
by Olin Moyles Ghost inlately i have done a lot of thinking about the inevitable discussions i will have with family and friends about my (and their) beliefs.
i have begun running through some hypothetical conversations in my mind.
today, i thought of a particular line of reasoning and would like to hear any comments/criticism from the board.

Believe me, I understand the flaws in this line of reasoning.
Is doctrinal "truth" impossible to prove? Yes, I know that.
Is Love more important than either of these? Yes.
However, I'm trying to approach this line of reasoning from a JW mind set with two goals. One, to get at least my family to understand that I am not an apostate. Even if they stop talking to me to preserve their relationship with the org, I'm trying to prevent them from thinking of me as "dead". Two, to possibly reach an elder or twol that I think will be receptive.
I know that it is possibly a lost cause, trying to prepare for the confrontation that I am bringing on. My feeling though is that this may be the best argument I can use because it is not offensive to what they teach, and supported by the bible.
They do believe they have "THE TRUTH", so they can't argue against it being important, as pointed out by another poster, they even use it as a recruiting tool.
If I argue for pro love instead of pro truth it could offend their feelings more than intellect, which I think would be more dangerous.

Olin,
This is precisely the line of reasoning that I am working up for my inevitable confrontation! I'm so happy to see some one else who's planning this out. I'm hoping that playing this line out with my family/elders will show them the sincerity of my actions.
Here's a few other scriptures that I expect out of the pro JW side :
Phil. 1:27-28 - "27 Only behave in a manner worthy of the good news about the Christ, in order that, whether I come and see YOU or be absent, I may hear about the things which concern YOU, that YOU are standing firm in one spirit, with one soul striving side by side for the faith of the good news, 28 and in no respect being frightened by YOUR opponents. This very thing is a proof of destruction for them, but of salvation for YOU; and this [indication] is from God,"
Ps 133:1 - “Look! How good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!”
Heb 13:17 - "17 Be obedient to those who are taking the lead among YOU and be submissive, for they are keeping watch over YOUR souls as those who will render an account; that they may do this with joy and not with sighing, for this would be damaging to YOU."
Here are my arguments for truth's supremacy over "unity" amongst JW's.
Jos 24:14 - "14 “And now fear Jehovah and serve him in faultlessness and in truth, and remove the gods that YOUR forefathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt, and serve Jehovah. "
1 Sam 12:24 - ". 24 Only fear Jehovah, and YOU must serve him in truth with all YOUR heart; for see what great things he has done for YOU."
Ps 25:4, 5 - "4 Make me know your own ways, O Jehovah; Teach me your own paths. 5 Make me walk in your truth and teach me, For you are my God of salvation."
Also Ps 26:3-6; Ps 43:3; Ps 86:11; Isa 38:3; 2 Pe 2:2;
Actually there's a ton of scriptures that I'm working in from the "Truth" heading in the Insight book.
I'm still doing the research on "unity" to head off their attack routes. All of the WT references about unity that I have found so far use such non specific language that it's hard to pick out those few important sentences or scriptures. I've also found a ton of articles about being "united in love" and the like, I actually think I will be able to use those against them. Being united in our love for neighbor and christ does NOT mean the same as being united under the WTBTS and their unique doctrine.
Wow, I got windy, sorry just excited is all.

Conversations with a Walgreen's girl
by lookingnow25 incute walgreen's girl : i don't know.
it's a personal decision.
l : well, i know it's a personal decision, but i need some neutral input.

I'd say it turned out pretty good! I couldn't get the back perfectly even, but whatever. This decision probably falls somewhere in between monumentally stupid and brilliant. I'm sure I'll get a few giggles and chides for the crooked back, and the uniform look, but whatever. "I'm made of rubber and you're made of glue. Whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you!"

I'm dealing horribly with it. My Brother In Law (31) announced he's anointed just a few weeks ago. I started a thread about it.

Whether she listens or not is her choice. Do your part to save someone else emotionally and physically if at all possible. -

Looking : What do you think? Should I just do it?
Cute Walgreen's Girl : I don't know. It's a personal decision.
L : Well, I know it's a personal decision, but I need some neutral input. My family and friends are all very against it.
CWG : What's the worst that could happen? It'll either be a great choice, or a monumentally stupid one.
L : The worst? Well, my family and friends could shun me entirely!
CWG : That seems a bit extreme. That won't last forever anyway, it's not like it's permanent.
L : It could be. What if I stick with this choice forever? The way I see it, it will save me time, money, and hassle.
CWG : But it could also get you made fun of and called names, or people will avoid you like the plague, probably temporarily though.
L : So you are all for it?
CWG : Yeah, I think so. It seems like there are more upsides than downsides.
L : (Thinking) (Strumming fingers) Alright, thanks for the help.
CWG : So you are going to do it?!? You're braver than I would be. That'll be $11.90.
L : Sweet, thanks.
At that I took my hair clipper kit and came home to cut my own hair.
HAH! I bet you that that conversation was about something else entirely! Now I just have to wait and see what the wife thinks when she gets home from the serve-us meeting.

P.S. - The preceeding conversation was embelished for comedic and dramatic effect. -

do you think that the jws that check out this site are affected ?
by looloo inobviously some of you were , but some topics i notice get huge amouts of folk reading them but not replying , i think that had i had internet access years ago and read some of these threads i wouldnt have lasted another week at kingdom hall , and yet i still imagine going to sit in the hall during a meeting so i could see what its like listening to a talk without a programmed mind and knowing that its a sign of a cult if your friends and family warn you its a cult but the cult tells you its just satan trying to get you out "the truth"!
