in north carolina, a pastor told the congregation of about 100 that if they voted for john kerry, they would not be welcomed in his church.
things this week came to a head when he took action to kick out 9 who didn't support the president.
others, in protest for the action also have left the church.
As one who tries to follow Christ, I am SO irritated at so-called "Christians" who do such blatantly un-Christian things like this!Their actions, all the while proclaiming that they are Christians, are a blasphemy against Jesus.
As for politicians who claim to be Christians, well....actions speak louder than words. *restraining self from getting on soap box*

fairchild: Wow! Thanks a lot for the tips. Hubby & I have gotten a lot of practical tips like that (re: pests, esp.) from Organic Gardening magazine, too. Sounds like you are a busy bee with all you've got going there!
Kenneson: I most certainly love growing and caring for my flowers. The sad thing is that I can't keep flowers in the house because my cats have a tendency to chew on any plants I bring in...even cut flowers they try to mess with!However, I really love my cats so I just work around this problem. I just got a couple of new rosebushes...A miniature rose with orange blooms and a full size that is supposed to have scarlet blooms (we'll see when it blooms, huh?). I'm putting some French marigolds, Shasta daisies, poppies, and various colored zinnias into my flowerbed, this year. I think it's great to have certain plants that are just there to be beautiful.
P.S. Okay, I think I get the hint...*writing note to self, "Do NOT plant mint!"*
i had a collection of older publications almost second to none.
along with the 30-year publications index, i felt invincible in the research department.. then i got disfellowshipped and divorced, and my ex kept them all.
" i couldn't tell her "for research" because that would have sounded like i was going to write a book exposing jw's, which would have made things even worse.
I didn't have a big collection of literature when I left (my parents were the ones with the big WT library), but what I did have, I threw away bit by bit, over the years until all I have left of it is a NWT. I kept that mainly because of the leather bible cover with interesting design.

My ex-Catholic husband and I did a lot of "comparing notes" on the JW v. Catholic "upper management" tactics with their parishioners/publishers. There were some marked similarities. The flip-flopping of doctrine, blaming the members for any and all problems that members have with faith/doctrine/family, etc., the "do more, do more....you aren't doing enough, ever" mentality.
This WT article brought back to my mind those discussions because it points up how very isolated and separated the GB is from the rank & file's life in the real world. It is similar to the insulated Catholic clergy class in Rome who insisted (do they stil?) on "no birth control" rule and yet did not care how this affected their parishioners' everyday lives. And if they missed Mass on certain "holy days" because one of their many children was sick, they were going to hell.
Hmmm...and in this article, the GB Writing Committee is not acknowledging at all that they have contributed directly to the parents' inability to spend enough time nurturing/ showing love to their children. (Especially if the parents were raised as JWs, since they were forbidden a college education!)

i just got word from my family that my grandmother died at 5am this morning.
it was her wish to see me once more before she died, i have a flight to see her at 10am tomorrow morning.
it was the only thing i could have hoped to do for her before she died, and it couldnt happen.
So sorry to hear about your grandmother's passing, GBL. I am very close to my maternal grandmother, who is 97 years old now. I know I will be hurting and very sad when she is gone. My sincere sympathies for your loss.

iggy_the_fish: I know what you mean about what a miracle it is to see lovely plants coming from those little seeds! A few days ago, my husband and I were marvelling over that same thing.

ballistic: I don't think that loving gardening is an "old people" thing. After all, I am only 30 years old. And my brother, who is just a few yrs. older than me, loves gardening, too. Don't worry, some female will come along who appreciates your agricultural tendencies!
jenniebeanz: I am putting in lettuce, tomatoes, snow peas, broccoli, red cabbage, mustard greens, collards, onions, carrots, green beans, wax beans and I can't remember what all else. Right now, I am focused on mainly the early crops. In a few weeks, I will be getting the transplants started for the later crops. I also already have a good garlic patch & a good asparagus patch going. I haven't got any berries this year. Next year, I think I will put in raspberries & blueberries, since they seem to do very well in this growing zone.
Purza: It sounds like you are into the gardening in a major way, also! Sounds like lots of yummy stuff. I hear you about stuff taking over. We had two tomato plants that reached monstrous proportions last year. Choked out my green peppers. Tomato plants are going into buckets this year! Good luck with the grape arbor. We are waiting on fruit trees and grapes until we purchase a larger property. Right now we are looking at land for sale & hoping to get 10 to 20 acre parcel so that we will have more room to pursue our gardening ambitions.

I really love it, myself. I am putting in quite a few vegetables this year. My asparagus patch is finally established and we will be able to get our first harvest from it pretty soon. Also, I am putting in some more flowers. I have some perennials going already and am going to be putting in some more this year as well as a few annuals.
In addition, I am embarking on an experiment with growing/harvesting/drying herbs. I am putting in chamomile, feverfew, hyssop, calendula and basil. I have many more types of herb seeds, but I wanted to start with just a few since I am a beginner on this aspect of gardening.
I hope all the people who love gardening see this post and reply!
