To My Generation: Jehovah's Witnesses of the Vietnam War Era
by Hold Me-Thrill Me into my generation: jehovah's witnesses of the vietnam war era .
if you were a young brother in the late 60's you then remember the burden of the draft and the prospect of going to jail for refusing on religious grounds to be called up.
in those days we were taught that to do community service was conscientiously the same as joining the military and so we were told to refuse such exemptions.

We lived through it and got married really young b/c of it. I got pg. and that was his ticket to a deferment . My friends - many went to prison and some were elders kids and pioneered and got out of it. Or College in some cases. It was a scary time for all of us, esp. those who chose to marry as teenagers and have a child. My kids are nearly as old as I am now. it was a mistake, we should have figured out another way- hell even Canada was a better option than becoming a parent long before we should have. My father served 2 prison terms b/c of it. Lots of nationalism down here in Bible Belt and hatred of jws or anyone who did not serve their country. Left a scar on my fathers life that time did not erase. Ruined his life. I will never forgive the wts for what they did to our family. Rotten bastards set up there in Bethel while the brothers who did not have elders as fathers or were too poor to pioneer had to go to prison. Bastards. -

17 year old son is blaming me for ruining his life from the Cult. He's complaining "I could have been a high school sports star!"
by PhilsWager2 inyou know about my not-so-ugly divorce and how me and my wife found out the religion is false.
she still attends while my 17 year old has been raging on me about all the wasted time he suffered from by being in this religion.
he think's his life is ruined, very angry we did not learn this was a cult earlier(he was 14 when he stopped attending after reading the revelation book, he said "in all time and history, how could a trumpet blown in revelation have anything to do with a jw bible student convention statement"?.

My very adult children still say this stuff to me, but I just tell them there was an excellent chance they would have been raised in some religion- since we live in the Bible Belt. It could have been Church of Christ or Pentecostals or Baptists- the most common religions around here. They would have been mad no matter what. They hate religion and have not raised their children with any religious beliefs or spirituality and surprisingly their kids regret this. Parents are always going to make mistakes, you just do the best you can. -

Anti-JW billboard going up in Texas
by sunny23 inthe first ever billboard has been crowd funded on reddit and will be going up.
i'm curious to know if it will cause a spark in any jw's who already have questions or doubts and lead them to research into the child abuse cases and lead them to the thought that the wt and gb are not inspired or gods mouthpiece.
at the very least it will provide people a topic of conversation and questions to the jw's who knock on their door: "so whats this whole sex abuse in kingdom halls thing about i saw on the billboard down the road?

Well, of course don't say jw, say " are the Jehovah's; witnesses at your door Pedophile's?" Most people would recognize that. I agree unless the target audience is current Jws, the lingo should be changed. Maybe, after asking are the Jws at your door pedophiles, one could say, " Do you know their church elders wouldn't tell them if they had a pedophile in their midst ?
That would be of real interest to everyone b/c almost everyone knows jws go door to door , like most people know Mormons do also.
I think knowing a potential pedophile was coming to my door would certainly be of general interest due to the laws regarding how far away they have to be from children.

I think it would have been better if they asked the public, " Is the JW's at your door a pedophile? " and add a bit more. Many people won't know what a Kingdom hall is so I guess the target audience is current Jws.
I am all for it. I think billboards are very effective as I said once before I recall in Texas on 635 ( LBJ for the locals) the Timothy McVeigh sign " Highway to Hell". Extremely effective and caused a lot of local discussion.

So who's going to the meeting in Baltimore tonght?
by ShirleyW ini'm sure some kind of arrangement was made, some of the uber dubs in a panic as to what they would do if the couldn't get to their meeting tonight.
probably bumped it up a few hours so they wouldn't be out at night for those that live in the middle of what's going on..

This is Tuesday and they used to hold the book study on that night, guess they still do--only now it is at KH instead of private homes. Probably they could bump the time up or if they really cared about anyone's safety they'd just cancel .

by maksutov inapparently it was announced last night.
i was not informed (for 'legal reasons'), but they phoned my dad and told him.
i understand it is due to my apostate book.

I haven't read every word in this thread but what "legal" reasons could they have for not informing you. Seems like calling your dad would be not ok.
I just put a link to your book on my facebook.

Ugh, at 25 with 2 children I still looked very young. I had more than one CO ( 45+) have someone introduce me to them. One CO followed me everytime I got up before he had someone introduce us. He was looking for a young virgin. (pervert)
I guess there are some perks for men in the Org , women are just chattel.

Some of us have reasons to be bitter. I try not to be mean but when they've destroyed 3 + generations of your family it is really hard to not be bitter. I don't really enjoy bitterness but it gives me a reason to get me up everyday. I guess I really do want an eye for an eye. won't say I'm sorry.
