Which philosophy would you personally value the highest and why?

) and i thought i should make an effort to look at and discuss the rest of the rainbow.

atheism does not define my influencing primary worldview though you'd be hard pressed to see that from my posts.. i'd be interested in what philosphy , idea, rule(s) most influence you and why - why do you feel they are superior, what do they make you value more or less , what would you be without your philosophy.

The philosophy that most appeals to me and I would like to see applied more widely is Aesthetics. The philosophy of beauty.

The application of beauty is the crown of all human endeavour. When a job is done with beauty it transcends its functional form and becomes much more than its simple purpose.

Art does not stumble with words, it defines no boundaries within which it requires understanding and it evokes reactions in all who perceive it but is not encumbered by a functional failure when reactions or perceptions differ wildly.

Every other discipline, every other endeavour, every other achievement of man is immeasurably improved , made more meaningful and melds emotion with perception with experience more perfectly when beauty is its core aim. It is possible to live a life of beauty which will be moral, serene, magnificent, authentic and adaptive or to live a life of ugliness , carelessness, pandering and fear. Beauty has no creed and it is owned by no-one, it requires no group behaviour and lists no moral absolutes. It is thought beyond words, it is the crucible of new ideas and it is the memory of past cultures. It is the one common denominator that links all mankind and all creeds and all beliefs. Beauty and art can continue the dialogue when the words have failed.

With art everyone can wear a crown.

OOo DT - I like this. I don't quite know what it means - that no conceptual model is fully wrong if it can be applied to at least one scenario and that no model is fully right if it either doesn't apply to at least one scenario or a more fully descriptive model exists for that which is observed? Nice.

I'm thinking back to when I was ultra zealous (good emotional times oddly - very fulfilling) as a missionary and I think that that person would have actually have given up marriage and family if he felt god wanted it - I was half way there as a missionary away from family for two years and under a covenant not to date girls during that time. Old me liked that the 'gospel' was actually worth something.

I'd be interested in what philosphy , idea, rule(s) most influence you and why - why do you feel they are superior, what do they make you value more or less , what would you be without your philosophy. I know we are all a bit eclectic and grab bits from here and there so if anyone wants to answer ( ) I'd like to suggest we stick to our main one. I appreciate that for believers that will be something like Christ but - for me, in this thread, today - that's ok. I don't want to debate the merits I just want to see the motivations and the effects.

If no one bites I'll post mine in a bit. I hope it will surprise you.

- sry to mislead apostatethunder. I was the spoof author . I was gathering a few scriptures regarding Jesus' reported views on family and I was struck by how odd they were and how harsh. I wanted to put together a similar set of sentiments from a fictitious author (crucially I wasn't offerring eternal life) just to see how they might sound in a more contemporary setting. I appreciate there is a whole world of context but the more I read the reported Jesus I can't tell whether I like (hmm might not be the correct word but I'll let it ride) this character because he isn't a hippie with flowers (his treatment of ill people was often quite nasty) or whether I think this guy is just a mish mash of first century bigotry.

I would like to make a stand for the individual with devotion to clan rather than to kin or spouse.

Much of society is designed to unite families and privilege the family unit. This is a great problem for the advancement of society and of the authentic self. I would like to offer a way of life that will return many times the benefits that christian traditionalists currently support. If you are brave enough to break your culturally taught ties to your siblings, your parents, your offspring , your wife and critically your physical possessions you will be empowered incredibly. These ties hold us back from becoming our true authentic selves as we sacrifice 'I' in relationships with material and people who may not be positive in our personal life - truly we do not choose our family but we choose to remain associated with them. If you truly want personal power then consider the sentiment from a modern film (Heat)

"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."

This is power. This is freedom. Only the free can ever truly accomplish their potential. Once you understand this principle, once you start to live your life by it you will never be able to turn back and consider yourself a free man ever again.

Life gifts you one thing - now. Society steals your now and teaches you to sacrifice your now for a better tomorrow. Other people will take all of your nows if you let them. The more you dedicate yourself to another the more they will take and the less they will do for themselves. Even when they die society will judge how much you have given and if you are found to be the main giver you will be asked for more, you will not stop giving. Giving is a black hole when it comes to relationships. You can never fill that hole.

Take marriage. Once youve got married that's it. You will never be the same. You can never express yourself intimately with anyone else without censure and judgement - even if your current relationship isn't very good! My advice is to be strong and not succumb to society's demands. Do not get married if you want to be free! Divorce is permitted but you'll always be weaker for it, society will never really forgive you. Once you have married you are better to suffer it but you will forever be weaker for it.

Are you confused, angry, unsure? These freeing ideas are the exact opposite of many things you have learnt. This is a war of ideas if you will between your taught self and this new approach to thinking that I am presenting. This should bring a great deal of conflict between close family members as you try to live by it. Those bonds are hard to break! People will hate you for it, especially those who are close to you. People tend to think they love others more than they love knowledge. If you are truly trapped by love for family or spouse you won't be able to benefit from this. Love itself must be sacrificed.

This is the last part of the puzzle. We love ourselves too much. We are bound to our old , romantic, christianised self, we are scared to let go. If we can walk away from all that we are, if we give up our former identity then and only then will be we be truly unstoppable.

can anyone imagine the what the elders in his current congregation must be going through ?!.

in their ideal world, they would have df'd him once they knew there would be a trial so they could play the card "he's not one of jw's.

" but since it occurred in a different congregation and he was already punished, there is little they can currently do.. wow, imagine the buzz in the kh when the info started leaking out.

hi all i'm new to this, i joined because from what i can see this is the best ex jw forum out there.. anyway i'm male, 20, live in uk and left the wtbts after 2 years of being a student.. there was this girl called natalya and she has really took me on one hell of a ride.

she was very helpful in my exit, because she often had debates with me and tried again and again to help me see sense.

anyway we dated before i found the truth and to be honest, i never really stopped having these feelings for her even though we fell out a few times.

Most people don't realise that all the pain, anguish and anger(?) that the body provides upon exiting a relationship is natures way of making you utterly awesome. Right now you have the critical energy to blast away neurons and feelings that your body has invested a long time building. Many people misunderstand this energy and use it to damage themselves as some kind of punishment (some even start to feel worthless, even suicidal - a bit like a nuclear technician sitting on a pile of energy and trying to make it blow up instead of using it to do epic sh!t). Nature is gifting you massive opportunity, rage power and the ability to build a new you based upon learnt lessons. Embrace it, get up, go to the gym, pump iron till it frakkin hurts and you feel awesome, go jogging, get onto a healthy eating diet, chuck out all the sentimental claptrap and yell to the stars how grateful you are that you didn't spend a wasted lifetime in a cult and you have a lifetime of experiences and relationships ahead of you. Stop analysising, stop wasting energy (it won't be there forever), make some positive lifestyle changes, be grateful , pumped and determined. Man up, smile, kick yourself in the butt and grab now.
