Then why create this thread? It strikes me as somewhat devious to create a topic that will touch certain hot button topics that people care passionately about when you've already decided in your world what you believe anyway.

Why are atheists so intent on scorning "believers"?
by Chariklo inuntil recently, i had never encountered this word "believers" used as it is being used on this board, to describe pejoratively a group of people.
it's not clear to me whether they scorn all who have a faith of some sort.
do they include buddhists, hindus, followers of the baha'i faith, followers of the cargo cult, native americans along with christians, or is it just christians who are honoured with this epithet?.

So Char - I guess you'll chalk that up as a victory for your own bias. Well done. Mission accomplished.

This discussion is awesome and is a great microcosm of the fate of faith based religion. Among those supporting the premise of a god ( apparently any god) it has been claimed and not refuted by any other faith based posters:
- God cannot be proved being outside of time and space ( which must make it difficult to do stuff but let's not point out that impossibility.)
- The bible is junk ( certainly the OT and much of the NT and then any verse that can't be defended )
- Religion is bad ( so even the organisation set up by bible Christ is rejected, those poor apostles trying to meet together to partake of the body of Christ have been thrown under the bus. )
- There is no physical evidence for God - This universe and all life within it is not useful for evidence apparently being physical.
- All beliefs are equally valid. Elephant headed gods are equally as likely and valid as a bearded invisible man.
- Atheism is disbelief in a real god and anger at a god.
- Atheism is no different from belief.
I find myself heartened by the full scale retreat of superstitious thinking. The churches will continue to empty , the bible and all other sacred scriptures will be increasingly rejected, without structure and organisation faith based beliefs will become little more than a game of Chinese whispers with believers unable to agree upon any form, the body of Christ will be the individual in Christ. This intellectual rout is turning into simplistic faith statements such as 'Christ is love'. Faith based belief is increasingly becoming a loose choir singing Beatles tracks (NC;) ) If your belief is so neutered that it simply traduced to you wanting to love more then great. Go do that.
The super thing about love is you don't even need an invisible being for it. It's a free gift from evolution. Ditch the crazy unloving blood sacrifices, eternal punishments, miracle silliness and pretence to secret knowledge. It's emotionally freeing.

It's Time to Dump the Hebrew Scriptures.
by smmcroberts inwhy do christian religions continue to pretend that the hebrew scriptures (aka the old testament) is god-inspired and that it describes a loving god?
don't they see that the ot is largely an embarrassment to its believers?
please read my blog to see why i think christianity should dispense with the ot all together:.

Back in my believing day I used to think that Jesus as Jehovah ( lds belief) was harsh because even though a god he had not experienced mortality and being perfect he couldnt so held them to insanely harsh standards. Jehovah as Jesus in the NT finally understood what it was like to be weak, tempted and impotent and became a much more nurturing being though I still saw flashes of the angry, petulant being he was before birth. I saw the bible as the story of a god growing up to be like his father Elohim, a being made perfect by understanding not by form.

Soledad - you said it can't be proven. This is pretty hollow - as a believer I really did think it was provable , after all I had proven gods existence to myself. Your statement regarding proof was not shared by the bible authors who went to great lengths to point out how all of nature and all events within it testified of god. What changed?

I don't think any atheist here is refusing anyone the right to believe what they want. That would be arrogant and beyond the gift of any poster here. When someone posts something fantastical on a website ( regardless of whether it's a ...edit - I too have no idea what should be here - brain fart ! ...or not ) there is a critical response from many because rarely is any justification offered for the unusual, normally supernatural or plainly provocative idea ( like this topic.) In school when you present an essay opinion unsubstantiated by reference to facts and source material it is a quick route to red pen and a low grade. Is it too much to ask that when an opinion is presented that it be slightly more than a poke in the ribs or a wild assertion?

My personal atheism hinges on a lack of evidence rather than any disagreement with a divine floaty being.
I've been here for many years now and you'd think one believer could have provided something that I could evaluate scientifically but so far it's just a ton of sophisticated hot air. It's not like I'm a difficult subject either, I'd rapidly alter my conclusions based on something of substance but apparently the most powerful, in all, through all , invisible but revealed is rejected by every physical and testable fact so far. Not simply a balance of probabilities but in every single way possible the evidence says unequivocally that the characteristics of all gods described so far are not compatible with the observed universe.
When I believed I got in some real tangled webs trying to explain my truth to skeptics. I could never understand why god didn't give me the words and the info that these , assumed honest posters were questioning me on. At the time I felt a bit like my god let me down.

It's because you are posting strange unsupportable assertions and thinking you are saying stuff of great import. Remember you need to explain why Ganesh is equally valid for the observed universe.
Shoot.

Which Christ Sab? Adoptionist Christ, hypo static Trinitarian Christ, Marcionite Christ, Ebionite Christ, Mormon Christ? Which one is real Sab?
To correct you again, you cannot be atheist and have a belief in any 'real' god be it any of the many Christs and Krishnas that have historically been worshipped by ignorant people without access to accurate knowledge of physics or history.
Edit missing 'historically'
