A comet coming to end the world? Useful information?
by EntirelyPossible inthoughts?
a woman named amanda started hearing a voiced telling them that a comet was going to destroy the earth.
they bought a house in the north carolina mountains to prepare, thinking the voice belongs to the dead former owner of the house.

AG does garner a lot of attention and good for her, I for one think it adds a lot of liveliness to the site when we have someone willing to go out on a limb and say something extreme. I think provocative opinions and ideas are the lifeblood of this forum and keep people coming back. I thoroughly enjoy Lars, AG, you Tec, Sab, all of the 'flies' ( which reminds me, where's NC , I do miss her) , the people who use funny pics or ideas , monkeys and so on. It's why I come back because ultimately this site has helped me move past an awful personal crisis and now it has a different place in my affections. I'm hopefully robust, abrupt , rude, sentimental ,occasionally awesome and above all British and I like to keep things spicy. I also am fiercely excited about the benefits of free thinking, scientific discovery and education. I am against slavery of the mind and body in all it's forms and so I fight the ideas of those who seek to self identify as slaves and to influence others to be slaves. I find it a noble cause and a bloody good laugh as well. I find the search for gods intellectually stimulating but no more, I stopped tilting at windmills when I became an atheist.
We'd all be a lot more boring without each other IMO.
I dare any god to reveal something useful in the next few posts. Like where will the next natural disaster be?

The stories are childish that the 'gods' tell but it is adults who repeat those stories. We cannot absolve ourselves of the need to move beyond believing and promoting evidence lite myth and we are well served to embrace evidence based reality. That we still have grown people honestly believing in talking animals, invisible winged creatures, secrets whispered to them on behalf of the masses, hidden codes and secrets in dusty old scriptures and supernatural events occurring all around all the time is a tragedy.
A serious, adult god would impart info clearly, universally and without threat, storytelling or confusion. No one would be privileged and such a being would tailor the message so you didn't need to know its name, or to listen a certain way or have your heart in a certain attitude. Such an intelligence would get on with the job in hand. No such god has made themselves known. Tsunamis kill thousands, asteroids sail close to the earth, kids are abused, women are raped, illness brings early death, the circle of natural life continues unabated by anything divine or technologically superior to mankind.

It's all in the detail. My god failed basic detail, info and science. I've asked for years now, along with other skeptics for anyone to provide evidence of a god who meets these standards and no one has managed. We have had a few messiahs, fun stories about dusty bones, odd proclamations to religious groups, redefinitions of the concepts of truth, light, seeing, hearing, love and peace , arguments of the angels on a pinhead variety but absolutely nothing, zip, nada that rose above the childish silliness of bible god's mustard seeds and entreaties to have faith. My god provided zero useful information so I killed him. I've been a divine serial killer ever since. :D

Your personal god AG sounds no warning, gives no advice, has no plan, is incapable of helping and has no power. Nothing you say will alter that fundamental truth. My god failed the information test and so does yours.

I hold my 'god' to a higher standard than believers hold theirs to when it comes to the information and truth. I used to give mine a pass on so many things and argue that I was only being given parable quality information as part of a divine plan for me ( if god needed me fairly ignorant and uneducated regarding the future so be it ) . Atheism for me equates to raising my information standard to that of basic human science and my god fails utterly. I have yet to find anyone else's god able to rise above parable bs yet either. The 'gods' of all cultures always tell us childish boo stories about death and end time destruction and are forever warning us of doom which never comes and then the culture ends and those gods disappear. Xianity has had its day thankfully and is dying, Jehovah and his rather sad tales of Armageddon will pass into the night to take his place with Ra , Zeus and Voldemort.
A decent , caring god would tell you and prepare to help unlike bible god who seems to enjoy causing death via various grisly means from bears to global genocidal floods.

A guy goes into the bar and sits down and orders a drink. Other than the bartender, there's no one else in the place. All of a sudden he hears a voice that says, "Nice suit." He looks around and doesn't see anyone and the bartender looks busy washing some glasses. A little while later the same voice says, "Nice Tie." The guy looks around again and doesn't see anyone. He finally asks the bartender if he just said something.
"No," replied the bartender, "it wasn't me. It was probably the peanuts though. They're complimentary. -

Incident with the Jehovah's Witness babysitter...
by garyneal inmy youngest daughter is so cute, she loves singing and loves being festive.
when i put up the tree, she loved saying, "it's christmas, it's pretty...." her babysitter, a witness from my wife's hall, lives next door to a neighbor who put up decorations in the yard like i did in front of our apartment.
when we leave her house, she would run next door to look at the "christmas" as she would say, "look, the christmas.

It is the job of a baby sitter to give developmental feedback if they are long term ("Sally is reading well") or to indicate issues of concern ("Jack banged his head") but not to impose religious standards. That she has reported back to you is good and positive (you want people who will give you info) and you shoul dprobably just ignore the topic for now and just keepan eye on whether this extends to inculcating the children with watchtower children products (my mother likes getting my non-believing kids books on bible stories - grrr.)
Just ignore it, let your kids experience life, let them know they are accepted and validated and what your parental boundaries are. As long as they see you as the alpha figures you are fine.
Good babysitters are worth their weight in gold.
