  theresa may the british p.m. has called for an election.. the house of commons has to vote tomorrow and have a two-thirds majority to agree and the main opposition parties want it to happen too so it looks pretty certain to go ahead..

  Phizzy - I presume you are also hoping for an exit from the EU to put right the evil perpetrated on the British peoples by the Roman legions?

  Seriously though - Scotland and England and Wales and Ireland (now just NI) have collaborated much much more than they have fought and have changed the world immeasurably. To lose a union which has had such a powerful influence (for better or worse) on the world in pursuit of naked nationalism is to really misunderstand how much we gained from each other. Without English money and population size Scottish influence across the world, in history, becomes much less and vice versa, Scottish inventors, soldiers, innovators and hard workers made a huge contribution to the spread of western ideas and inventions under the Union Jack.

  The union of 4 nations has been a beacon to the world for many years. Scotland alone or in the EU is a much dimmer light and the world is poorer for it.

  England and Scotland should think about dissolving the union for good and making it a permanent single state. This division , stirred up by false nationalism, is an utter waste of something great and something that is unlikely to ever happen again. There are no people closer in blood, family and shared history than the Scots and the English/Welsh/Irish. Heck Ireland should consider creating the nation of Great Britain and get on with creating an outpost of law, fairness, education and enlightenment in this world of teetering institutions and war filled collapsing states.

  If the EU is to become something similar to the UK it has a lot to do to change and there is nothing stopping the UK from rejoining at some future date. A reformed UK once broken is unlikely to ever happen again.

  I am actually impressed by May's job so far. She voted remain and yet has honoured the majority will of the people. She has put forward multiple claims for unity amongst us all during this emotive and challenging time (I've not heard many calls for unity from any other major politicians - mainly they are all sniping in the hope of gaining disgruntled votes rather than trying to support the whole UK.)

  With regards to the EU she has been firm, gracious and hasn't jumped to any over-inflated demands but has stated simply that she wants a good deal for all and that the UK will , quite rightly, walk away from a bad deal.

  She hasn't closed any doors (e.g. she hasn't stated we won't pay any oustanding EU obligations nor did she get embroiled in the Gibraltar baiting) and she has handled the various spoiling tactics of the Gina's and Nicola's of this world without nastiness or losing her cool. Parliament has backed her and we are maneuvering into a negotiating stance that should be united and have a mandate.

  The UK people , in general, are uniting under her assured leadership. Cometh the hour cometh the woman.

  Very, very happy with our current political leadership and I wouldn't trust the Brexit leadership needs with any other single candidate at the moment.

  Landy - the people , on anecdotal average, driving the best cars in the area are the Asian youths. There is definitely poverty in the area (this is a council estate area with relatively few private homes) however, the majority of local crime when I first arrived here was caused by a gypsy encampment up the road and two white lads who have since been in and out of jail and seem to have calmed down. The gypsies now tend to drive quad bikes around the estate at night as their major nuisance factor.

  No the crime has shifted and is quite specific. I think poverty will account for a lot of shoplifting as families struggle to eat but overall UK welfare payments are generous and crime in Arleston isn't like urban inner city crime. Burglaries dropped massively when the 2 lads I mentioned above started their time at her Majesty's pleasure. Most people here have a big TV, basic food in the cupboard, enough for a few vices and Netflix. Car ownership has dropped a bit but overall I'm not seeing poverty as a major causative effect - it didn't cause the sex rings.   Is this the large non-integrating immigration that are integrating their kids into school?

  The law says that you have to go to school in this country (you can home school but it's not encouraged.) The schools are a place where we - as a nation - are in a race to install common ideas of equal rights, respect and tolerance. One day I hope they'll add critical thinking to the curriculum but for now the community has to do what it can, at a high cost, with those it is in the care of.

  Just to be clear I'm not personally suggesting race has anything to do with it - I don't have any statistics or info to inform me either way, I am absolutely saying that culture - of which religion can be a dominant part - is a key formative element of behaviour. I am seeing the existing dominant British culture (which in my neck of the woods was primarily Anglo-Saxon with a sprinkling of Indians and and some Sikhs about 20 years ago) changing with a huge demographic shift (remember the ~50% of kids in the school in 2013).

  I know this is boring sh*t but it is important to illustrate that these are not random racist or bigoted statements from a white 'privileged' male. These are hard facts on the ground. From the local area reports from 2011 - (BME stands for Black and Minority Ethnic):

  Arleston ward is located in the centre of the Borough to the south of the market town of Wellington.

  The 2011 Census found a total ward population of 3,635, with some 23.2% of these residents from a BME background, more than twice the Borough rate of 10.6%. Deprivation within the ward is fairly high with the north west area in the 10-20% most deprived nationally and the south east in the 30-40% most deprived nationally. Deprivation is highest in the education skills and training domain. The proportion of households claiming housing or Council Tax benefits is higher than Borough wide, particularly for households with dependent children under 20 (16.2% compared to 10.3%). Almost a third (30.6%) of children in the ward are eligible for free school meals, the fifth highest ward rate in the Borough, higher than the average of 21.3%. A third (33.5%) of children in Arleston are living in poverty compared to 24.8% Borough wide and almost a quarter (22.3%) of households are living in fuel poverty, the third highest rate in the Borough (average 16.7%). Arleston accounts for 3.9% of all young people not in education training or employment across the Borough. Rates of people claiming job seekers allowance are similar to Borough wide. Educational attainment in Arleston is lower than across the Borough as a whole with attainment at Early Years Foundation Stage (22.6%) and Key Stage 1 (71.4%) amongst the lowest in the Borough. Rates of crime and antisocial behaviour (ASB) in Arleston are higher the Borough wide across all categories except for ASB – Malicious communication. Satisfaction levels in the ward are lower than Borough wide, in particular just over half of residents (53%) agree that their area is a place where people from different backgrounds get on well together compared to 75% across Telford and Wrekin.

  Here's some extracts from the 2013 school report (in the 2015 report they did improve on many of these metrics due to a lot of extra training and money which was spent following the poor 2013 report ) and doesn't include areas where they are doing ok (i.e. I'm cherry picking the points to illustrate the basic idea that educational attainment and resource allocations change when the community is experiencing a large non-integrating immigration.)

  • This is a larger-than-average primary school.
  • The very large majority of pupils are from White British or Pakistani backgrounds, in equal proportions. The remaining few come from a wide range of other ethnic heritages.
  • The proportion of pupils speaking English as an additional language is well above the national average.
  • The proportion of pupils supported by the pupil premium, which is extra government funding for particular groups, including pupils known to be eligible for free school meals, looked after children and those from service families, is well above the national average.

  • Achievement requires improvement because not enough pupils make good progress, particularly in mathematics and those who are more able. This is because teaching is not consistently good throughout the school and so progress between year groups is too variable.
  • Pupils join the school with knowledge and skills that are well below those expected for children of this age, particularly in aspects of communication, language and literacy and mathematical development. Progress requires improvement in the Early Years Foundation Stage although it is showing signs of improvement. The Nursery establishes good links with parents and carers and so children settle quickly. There is a strong emphasis on care and nurture, especially for children who have specific needs. For example, when pupils who speak English as an additional language were encouraged to make a pattern with coloured cubes, a bi-lingual teaching assistant explained what the child should do in their first language while encouraging them to talk about their work in English.
  • Pupils supported with pupil premium funding make similar progress to others as a result of the support they receive in lessons and small group teaching. They are closing the gap in attainment with other pupils in the school and nationally in English, but the gap has increased in mathematics. Based on their average points scores at the end of Year 6 these pupils are approximately two terms behind their classmates in English and three terms behind them in mathematics.
  • Teaching assistants make a significant contribution to pupils’ learning throughout the lesson, especially for pupils who speak English as an additional language, as well as disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs. For example in a Key Stage 1 class a teaching assistant supporting a group of pupils who have special educational needs, made very good use of the interactive whiteboard to help them to create sentences.

  From the 2015 report - which does show marked improvements - but what this doesn't tell you is that they basically had to do the following after pupils from aforementioned community had been sexually harassing female classmates on social media and the police and social workers got involved:

  • The work done to secure pupils’ appreciation of British values is a major strength of the school. Pupils understand the importance of showing tolerance and respect for each other. They talk openly about this and about how well those from a range of different communities get on together in school. Staff have promoted pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development outstandingly well to create a highly positive culture and ethos where all groups have an equal chance to succeed without discrimination. This work is supported by the school’s role in the cooperative trust, which has helped cement its place at the heart of the community.
  • Pupils have a suitable understanding of what constitutes bullying and how to deal with it. They are very positive about the lack of any name-calling or racist bullying. They know how to keep themselves safe when using computers. They are aware of possible dangers from, for example, strangers, and are confident there are adults in school who they can trust and would talk to if they had any worries.

  The following is very cleverly worded way of saying the Pakistani children struggle to keep up but make better progress than the national average for their community. The more able kids - whatever their background - get neglected since the school is throwing all its efforts at the less advantaged.

  • Pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds make good progress in reading, writing and mathematics. The largest minority group, from a Pakistani heritage, make better progress than similar pupils nationally. Those from Eastern Europe often make exceptionally good progress, especially in reading and writing.
  • Throughout the school, the most-able pupils make at least the expected progress. The school is aware that it is not yet doing enough to ensure that more reach the highest possible levels in their work

  I gave two examples of immigration - one where the immigrants integrated, contributed and strengthened the community - their race, colour, religion did not cause issues because their fundamental attitude was positive. I also gave the alternative where one particular culture with one overriding religion is not integrating, is pushing out local businesses, is rapidly bringing in extended family, is using the social provisions to their maximum and at the school level is starting to lower the educational attainment levels and forcing a greater share of resources to be spent on assistants and teaching materials that further reduce integration into British society, they are now the dominant criminal force locally, they have directly harassed my wife due to their anti-women teaching and they are replacing the community with its own forcing the incumbents to move.

  I suspect you live somewhere without significant problems like this otherwise you'd be able to make a less naive assessments.

  Make a poster and wear a hat - that'll help.

  bohm - honestly I don't know. Maybe its the old Empire thing. We haven't to my knowledge had many middle eastern immigrants though we did have some fantastic Muslim Kurds temporarily staying in my street while they got degrees (Genuinely lovely people, with the exception of a headscarf dressed the same, shared recipes with my wife, cooked us huge meals and hung out for family picnics - even now their kids in Kurdistan and mine skype - one of the mothers actively encouraged my younger kids to play with theirs to help them learn English - they weren't even planning on staying).

  Just a quick balance to the above. The industry I work in was responsible for bringing in a lot of Indians to my town. A world of difference. Polite, often funny, dressed like us, hard working and a real asset to themselves and India. The Sikhs and Hindus are bloody brilliant, their kids raise the average level of the classes and they aim high. That's what positive immigration from a great culture means.

  Laika - explain rather than spout? I'll clarify my point to give you some meat.

  I live in a part of the UK which has a very high rate of migration. This is a mixture of Poles and Pakistani origin families. This has been ongoing for many years. The Poles generally work hard and integrate well. The older immigrants from the 50s and 60s also integrated well. The latest arrivals seem to stick in their communities, wear their former countries national dress - often most offensively full facial coverings, actively avoid speaking English and exacerbate housing shortages by cramming multiple families in small houses forcing the council to step in. Currently my two youngest children are a white minority in their classes, the teaching staff are slowly being replaced by multi language speakers (which stands to reason) and the school governors are now 50% non-white. A sex grooming gang of paedophilic Asian men made the national news and they used a flat above a shop , in view of my house (~100 metres away.) Most of them got away with it. The story has been published in a book called 'I never gave my consent'. My wife's former employer was told to sell his business to an Asian businessman and then was beaten up and robbed. He sold. The same happened to the local autorepair company - its now Asian owned. My wife gets weekly abuse in her current job - mainly from Asian , male youths (not exclusively but mainly.) The local drug dealers are based around the Asian taxi firm which is just around the corner from my house where they run an illegal repair shop from a private dwelling. Each night Asian youths park up around the house smoking and dealing. The white families are being pushed out of the cheaper housing as the Asian landlords buy up most properties and move in immigrants lowering the land value and running areas down.

  So this is what I mean - the incumbent population are being replaced. Some get angry and want to fight. Some protest (though the law firmly favours the minorities - the last protest in the town centre ended up with the lady who was handing out leaflets warning about grooming gangs - who had abused her daughter - being put in the cells overnight.) Some try to be extra friendly and defend the encroaching cultural replacement. Some people try to get political representation (UKIP).My family are looking to move as my daughters are scared to go out on their own(oldest has been flashed and propositioned by the aforementioned car dwellers.) This is what it looks like to have your culture replaced. These are all behaviours that have happened before across the world as incumbent populations try to preserve their way of life in the face of incoming people - its a powder keg.

  The real shame is that most of the problems aren't from the very first generation immigrants who generally integrated fairly well and took pride in being British. Its their kids and the latest wave. It also wouldn't be so bad if it was a superior culture but its setting back equal rights and causing massive pent up anger - on both sides.
