finding friends outside the Borg - a Scary thought
by lydia inhas anyone else found that the teaching of the "outside world" being a "bad association" limits your involvement and ability to make new freinds?.
if so how have you overcome this and any suggestions to helping those suffering from these feelings?.

Xena, you'll never make friends with such a hostile attitude.... I think bgurl's point was that instead of directing so much energy towards self-pity we can help other people. I registered myself at allexperts.com as an expert on JW matters. I get about 3-4 emails a week from sincere people asking detailed and thought-provoking questions about the JW faith. Most are NOT JW but people outside needing information because a loved one is in it or about to be in it. Like Bgurl said, we are in a very unique situation where we can help many others avoid the pain we have suffered.
At my old University they had speakers who would talk about the dangers of cults (cults like the 'boston movement' International Church of Christ loved recruiting new zombies from Universities, especially large universities where incoming freshman might feel lonley and vulnerable) Any one of could contribute to society in that manner.
The wisest man on earth is the man who has made the most mistakes.
As for making friends, I was friendless for a while too..I left at 18 so it wasn't as bad for me I think. But I gained alot of friends from college, from my breakdancing hobby and from doing extra work for movies.
There are a lot of weird, interesting acitivties that will gain you cool friends. Ever heard of a airline courier? YOu get to travel to places like europe and exotic islands for either free or like $50 round trip. The catch? Your hired by companies and private citizens who need something hand-delivered to another area FAST and it is apparantly cheaper to ship heavy items by using your luggage space as a passenger than using fedex or other worldwide delivery services. So the catch is you can only take carry-on luggage.
One of my weird jobs is Theatre Open Checking (www.rapidchek.com) where I get paid to watch movies. Its good money, its on the weekends and damnit, free movies and getting paid for it! that rocks! You work for the various movie studios like warner brothers and new line cinema. You work 100% remotely, they gfedex you the assigments, you go and do them then mail them back, 4 weeks later presto a nice paycheck. Just working like 3-4 hours a weekend I get an extra $6,000-$10,000 a year from that job. During the summer you can make as much as $2,000 a month. You meet a lot of fun people and it's just fun in general.
Another weird activity that pays well is being a movie extra. Depending on where you live there can be a large demand for extras. Your start-up cost is about $15 to register with a casting company and then you get calls asking if you are available to be an extra on a tv show, commercial or film. It pays $100 a day and all the free meals you can eat, and you get to meet the stars. Go to www.soyouwanna.com and look up being an extra for more detailed info.
Hobbies in general are the best way to meet peeps with similair interests. Take up archery, a martial art, squirrel juggling, anything you ahve always wanted to try. Many local community centers offer very affordable programs. For example my local CC offers tai chi for only $50 a month.
But in general, youll find that good, close friends are hard to come by and your lucky to have more than one in your life. Treasure real, unconditional friendship wherever you may find it.

by speffot indont get me wrong, i dont mean to sound critical or rude, but how can some of you say you are witnesses but not attend meetings and stuff...or go witnessing?
its what jehovah says to do, so how can u not do what jehovah says, but yet call yourself a jehovahs witness??

Correction, JEHOVAH NEVER SAID TO ATTEND MEETINGS... the bible simply says to associate with like-minded ones..you'll remember that early christians met in homes and ate a meal together. Nothing like the dry. formal ritual we have now. Ok, so if Jehvoahs never said that, who did? The governing body? IS what they say the same as if God said it? Think about that, and also this quote from an essay I love:

As for denying Raymond Franz was ever a JW, or denying he was in the GB, that's also normal. I have got many, many letters during the last 8 years telling me that.
I thought that certain books throughout the years list the governing body members? Also if he wasn't a governing body member, why hasnt the WTBTS sued? If he is lying they would win for slander and misrepresentation and other stuff. Why allow someone to have not one, but TWO long detailed books that claim he was a governing body member when he wasnt? Clearly your mom hasnt thught this out. JW's never like using logic it's "evil"

although you may read only local newspapers reporting this incident, and although the local papers say only that 2 hispanic males ordered a mountain dew and it spilled and then they left the taco bell cursing the management, my version is the honest truth and not sensationalism at all!.

Is the UN 'scandal' the big one ?

the next 'most read' thread is around 9,500 so it is clearly a burning issue.. i wonder if the involvement with the un is the biggest threat to the wts?.
they are getting badly burnt because of their covering up child abuse and www.silentlambs.org is doing a great job of raising the profile of this but even so, i can see the 'mental defense mechanism' of many jws excusing this as 'individuals imperfection'.. they cannot excuse the gb getting in bed with the un.

The disturbing thing about ALL religions
by Leander inover the past couple of years i've been really questioning myself about why i have doubts about the wts and even the bible.. even though i've been raised as jw all of my life i've often felt that i was'nt really a religious person.
unlike some of the people around me i just could'nt (and still can't) work up any excitement about the bible.. so after much thought i've come to the conclusion that the disturbing thing about all religions is that fear is emphasized more so than love.
some might argue and say that the bible teaches just the opposite, some will no doubt think about the scripture "god loved the world so much that he sent his only begotten son".

Choice is why evil exists. We can choose that which is good for us, or that which we desire that is NOT good for us.
There's a flaw to your premise that this is fear based. Just because we desire something doesn't mean it's good for us. Our choices are have consequences. God doesn't punish us for our bad choices, rather he lets us suffer the consequences.Ok, now what about being gay? The bible clearly condemns homosexuality (only in the old testament, which bizarelly allows incest) Noone is hurt by consesual relations. There is no 'crime' yet god would kill you for it. Beleive in jesus or die...forever..not even die really..stay alive forver but be tortured for eternity...your example of children is a good one. If your child commits a wrong, does he need to shed blood to earn your forgiveness? Do you kill him? torture him? God does all these things to his 'children' If your son commits a wrong, then later grows up and has kids of hi own, do you also punish his children for his crime? God loves doing this, he did it to us after adam. All of adams children got punished for what HE did. Thats not justice or love.
