Apostle Paul as Roman Soldier

it was brought up in another thread that paul got his roman citizenship by serving as a soldier for at least 20 years.

this was the only way a non-italian non-roman born could do it.. i remember an illustration - in one of the big books, like "things in which it is impossible for god to lie" or "life everlasting" where saul of tarsus is pictured holding the robes of those who are stoning christians to death.. he is dressed as a roman soldier with a metal breast plate.

anybody have a scan of this?.

According to Acts 22:28, Paul states to a Roman commander, that he was born a Roman citizen. Whether or not Paul was a Roman soldier is never stated in any Scripture of the New Testament nor by any Patristic writer that I am familiar with. How Paul's father got Roman citizenship is simply speculation. Now if you have some proof, other than your conviction, that Paul was a Roman soldier I would love to see it. Until then, I will stick with Luke's biography of Paul.

My recollection from My Book of Bible Stories showed Paul in traditional garb for a 1st century AD civilian. I don't have one in possesion any longer (nor do I want one), so I will leave that where it lies.

Nearly every commentary I have read on Ephesians, ranging from conservative to liberal, seems to be of the opinion that Paul got his idea regarding the spiritual armor from the Roman soldiers that were guarding him.

Why is the US so afraid of Social Health Care?

i just don't get why the us is so afraid of social health care, and is so opposed to the canadian and british models.

the plain fact is that there are far more americans without access to health care than the combined populations of sweden, norway, denmark and finland.. a measure of the maturity of any society has to be how it sees fit to re-apportion its wealth.. we are quick to criticise african leaders who line their own pockets but leave the masses in poverty but cannot see that blindly following capitalist principles is much the same.

if we live in a wealthy society then part of that wealth has to be put back into society as a whole.. .

I think the opinion of Americans would change if Americans were traveling to Canada or Europe for healthcare, instead of the Canadiens and Europeans traveling here for healthcare.

I thought the context of this thread was clear and that I didn't have to state that I was obviously speaking of Americans' reluctance for socialized healthcare.

saw this movie saturday, and enjoyed very much.

Saw this movie Saturday, and enjoyed very much. Though the anti-Apartheid message was 20 years too late and just a tad heavy-handed. The movie takes you one a journey in which an alien ship hovers over Johannesburg, South Africa. Unable to communicate with the ship, the local authorities enter the ship and discover aliens living in the ship that are ill and malnurished. They are then transported into District 9, an alien ghetto. The film briefly chronicles the interactions between the aliens and humans, leading to the aliens eviction from District 9. This is the catalyst in which the mid-level manager is promoted to handle the eviction. This process eventually leads to circumstances that involve the manager and an alien.

I loved the use of documentary style filming. This changes to traditional filming technisues about halfway through the movie. The dialoge was crisp, and the action was riveting. However, the best part of the movie was the ending. The movie was not wrapped up in a nice bow, like in Independence Day, but rather left you with a sense of uncertainty, and that was refreshing. Check it out.
