My ponderings on religion etc
by ballistic inof course, we of all people know just how wrong you can be.
so what about the rest of life outside of religion?
politics maybe, or just general life situations?

I've really been enjoying everyone's thoughts on this subject. I have tried really hard (not always successfully) to break out of those old rigid patterns that we do sometimes tend to bring with us after we leave those who taught and reinforced them... a sort of "you can take the Witness out of the Organization, but you can't take the Organization out ot the Witness" Syndrome. Fortunately it can be done and all begins with awareness and willingness. Here's another quote I like:
"Security is mostly a superstition, it does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all!" --Helen Keller

In Search of... Good Parenting Tips
by MerryMagdalene incalling all parents who raised children according to borg guidelines or anyone who was raised that way him- or her-self and, thus, is aware of the damage often thereby done.... i was raised as a 4th generation jw, drew away at least a decade ago, and am now the mother of a wonderful 3 year old girl.
i am looking for some words of wisdom to keep in mind as i do my best to raise her in a sane and loving manner.. any ideas on positive things to keep in mind?
and what about negative things to watch out for (you know, those nasty things we don't even realize are still part of our psyche until they jump out and scream "boo!")?.

Thanks so much to all of you!!! That was really great stuff to hear... Most of it made me feel good that I am following my instincts, letting her be a kid (with all the mess and craziness that entails), and definitely loving her unconditionally. On those occasions when anger has flared up, I can see now that it was because I was allowing myself to take something too personally, perhaps unconsciously expecting her to live up to an impossible adult standard. I wish I could address all your comments individually with my appreciation, but please know I am grateful for what all of you had to imput! Thanks again!

My heartfelt admiration and applause that you are willing to consider the multitude of possibilities, realities, and viewpoints that exist within and around us all. I guess it isn't such "a small world after all"!

Oh no! I'm worried for all of you. As my mother often quoted to me while I was growing up: "To the making of many books there is no end, and much devotion [to them] is wearisome to the flesh." --Ecclesiastes 12:12. No wonder I'm so tired all the time. I love books and I enjoyed looking through other readers' lists here.
I'm reading: Blue Moon by Laurell K. Hamilton and will soon be ordering, through my local library, Crisis of Conscience by Raymond Franz. I highly recommend Letters from the Earth by Mark Twain.

I haven't been to the Quotes site yet, this is the first I've heard of it. I just came to the forum today to see if anyone has yet compiled a simple, clear list of glaring inconsistencies within the teachings of the WTBTS, contradicting either themselves or the Bible that I could refer to. I will definitely check the quotes site, but if anyone knows of any other resources that might help I would appreciate a posting here that I can check back on. Thanks!

Been going on for a long long time...From the Gospel of Mary Magdalene (Papyrus Berolinensis 8502):
Peter answered and spoke concerning these same things.
He questioned them about the Savior: Did He really speak privately with a woman and not openly to us? Are we to turn about and all listen to her? Did He prefer her to us?
Then Mary wept and said to Peter, My brother Peter, what do you think? Do you think that I have thought this up in my heart, or that I am lying about the Savior?
Levi answered and said to Peter, Peter you have always been hot tempered. Now I see you are contending against the woman like the adversaries. But if the Savior made her worthy, who are you to reject her? Surely the Savior knows her very well. That is why he loved her more than us. Rather let us be ashamed and put on the perfect Man, and seperate as he commanded us and preach the gospel, not laying down any other rule or law beyond what the Savior said.
So put that in your Bible and smoke it.

JW fun is at an all-time low
by Nosferatu inthere used to be much more enjoyable things in the jw religion that would give you some relief from the recycled information.
remember when there were two dramas at the conventions?
remember at the meeting, instead of having a public talk, a missionary would show slides from his recent trip, or there would be a movie shown from the wts?.

I remember having a bit of fun! One year, when I was about 12 or 13, we (a few of the sisters and their kids) started having costume parties with a biblical theme. My best friend and I kept our plan secret, it was so fantastic, and I can't tell you how startled everyone was when I showed up in a costume made mostly of scarves and did a brief dance, then went over to a table made from a large cardboard box, raised up the silver platter cover that was sitting on it and revealed my friend who was playing the part of John the Baptist, his head sticking up through a hole in the box, neck surrounded by ketchup, eyes rolled back in his head, and tongue lolling out. The elders decided that costume parties were a bad idea because it's wrong to pretend you're someone you are not! That really makes me laugh these days!...pretending you're someone you're not! None of them ever does that, do they now?
