On second thought...maybe Rutherford was able to use this "loop-hole" in prohibition law, making his drinking (almost) perfectly legit:

No one shall manufacture, sell, purchase, transport, or prescribe any liquor without first obtaining a permit from the commissioner so to do, except that a person may, without a permit, purchase and use liquor for medicinal purposes when prescribed by a physician as herein provided, and except that any person who in the opinion of the commissioner is conducting a bona fide hospital or sanitarium engaged in the treatment of persons suffering from alcoholism, may, under such rules, regulations, and conditions as the commissioner shall prescribe, purchase and use, in accord once with the methods in use in such institution liquor, to be administered to the patients of such institution under the direction of a duly qualified physician employed by such institution.

"SEC. 7. No one but a physician holding a permit to prescribe liquor shall issue any prescription for liquor. And no physician shall prescribe liquor unless after careful physical examination of the person for whose use such prescription is sought, or if such examination is found impracticable, then upon the best information obtainable, he in good faith believes that the use of such liquor as a medicine by such person is necessary and will afford relief to him from some known ailment. Not more than a pint of spiritous liquor to be taken internally shall be prescribed for use by the same person within any period of ten days and no prescription shall be filled more than once. Any pharmacist filling a prescription shall at the time endorse upon it over his own signature the word "canceled," together with the date when the liquor was delivered, and then make the same a part of the record that he is required to keep as herein provided.

Nothing earth-shaking, just kinda interesting, at least to me...

Remember the Treseders, who lived with Eugene & Susette Heath Black, according to the 1930 census. Ross C Treseder was described as a coca-cola salesman, like Susette's brother WP Heath JR. I quoted his remembrance of the old Coca-Cola sales meetings because their techniques reminded me of JWs. Well, also like WP Heath Jr, he was more than just a salesman. September 3, 1934 TIME magazine said this about him:

Many a corporate chief executive is annoyed by too many vice presidents—but not President Seton Porter of National Distillers. Indeed, President Porter has been hard put to find bright young men who knew anything about the liquor business except consumption. Last week, however, President Porter created two new vice presidencies, one for Arthur W. Loasby, onetime head of old Equitable Trust and chairman of National Distillers' executive committee since 1924; and one for Ross C, Treseder, who knows a lot about drink but not hard drink. Liquor-man Treseder used to be vice president & general manager of a big Coca-Cola selling subsidiary.

That's right. Just a year after prohibition was over, Mr. Treseder was VP of National Distillers. I know I have a suspicious mind, but I can't help but wonder if he's was as "innocent" as they made him sound...cos I'm still wondering who the Judge's liquor connection was during prohibition...

Rutherford's Cadillacs

recently i read a post somewhere (not even sure if i read it here) about rutherford and his cadillacs.. where ever it was they said the cars cost $600 at the time.

well i thought that was a little odd.

since then i have read on 2 separate sites that rutherford's car cost a lot more than $600 each.. here is a picture of rutherford with one of his cars.. .

"Also, a relative of Bonnie Heath told me that she lived out her later years in Atlanta, GA. This shows that the early connection of Heaths to Georgia continued until Wm and Bonnie's death.
"That same relative told me that Mr. Heath gave Rutherford his Cadillac cars that were parked in Beth Sarim's garage. It is well documented that Bonnie's husband was always Rutherford's driver of the cars. Also, I was told that Bonnie's husband had no money at that time because Coca Cola had been sold. Bonnie's husband was known to be a drunk! Perhaps support of Bonnie and Wm Heath by Rutherford and the Watchtower, later on, continued because of the gift of Beth Shan to Rutherford by Mr. Heath Sr. It is not inconceivable that an arrangement was set up and the Heaths received regular monthly checks from the WT until death because WT is very loyal to those who were part of the inner group in the early years during tough times. To this day, very few people know that certain ex-Bethelites receive money as special pioneers although they do not pioneer. The money is a reward for spending years of faithfulness in Bethel in a prominent position, but had to leave because of illness, etc.

In 1926, Davis-Baker opened a project called "Kensington Heights," using an aggressive marketing plan to sell property in a declining real estate market. 1 Their promotional efforts and aesthetic demands for a specific architectural style made Kensington Heights appealing to buyers.

Kensington Heights was the last of the parcels to be developed, and consisted of 115 acres overlooking Mission Valley. As it did then, this general area today makes an ideal residential location; it sits high on a dry mesa surrounded by chaparral-wooded canyons, overlooks a broad rambling valley, and is cooled by breezes blown in over the ocean from the west.
The Kensington location was first considered for development in 1909 as a potential site to build luxury homes for retired executives of the Santa Fe Railway Company. 2 The land was part of the ex-mission rancho owned by Santiago Arguello. In 1885, this part of the ex-mission lands was surveyed and sold for the first time. The property changed hands over the years and eventually a parcel of 157 acres became the property of the Kensington Park Land Company on April 8, 1910. 3 The Kensington Park Land Company divided and sold tracts of land to developers whose business was the creation of individual properties designed to accommodate residences and businesses.

George Forbes was a typical investor; he was an experienced businessman and real estate speculator who had purchased some of the Kensington land with a mind toward realizing large profits. 4
A real problem for Forbes was San Diego's declining real estate market. In 1926, the San Diego market was at the end of a speculative boom.

George Forbes hired the Davis-Baker Company to develop his land.

To introduce themselves to the San Diego market, Davis-Baker worked with local businessmen, merchants and other local professionals. One such association was with Richard Requa, an architect known to San Diego businessmen and housewives alike; he had designed the developments of Ojai and Rancho Santa Fe, and wrote a popular column for the San Diego Union about architecture and interior design. Through this association, Davis-Baker created an ideal situation for themselves by which they could run their advertisements for Kensington Heights alongside Requa's articles about home design and interior decorating. They also formed what they called the "Architectural Committee" to oversee the building design for all homes in Kensington Heights, demonstrating to the public the exclusivity of the development. 11 The committee of one consisted of Richard Requa. 12

Gilbert Aubrey Davidson (1869-1958)

G. Aubrey Davidson was founder and president of the Southern Trust & Savings Bank and its successor, the Southern Trust & Commerce Bank of San Diego. Long a resident of San Diego and for many years an official of the Santa Fe Railway, Mr. Davidson had the financial backing of several Santa Fe officials when he promoted the bank in 1907.

The Southern Trust & Savings Bank was chartered July 1, 1907 with a capital stock of two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and began business October 1st in the U. S. Grant Building. Its initial deposits were a little over a quarter of a million, and the total had increased almost three-fold in a year. The deposits passed the two-million mark in 1912 and the institution has grown and expanded every year since its establishment. The Southern Trust and Commerce Bank, while its headquarters were still in the U. S. Grant Hotel Building, operated four branches, at El Centro, Brawley, Coronado and La Jolla. During 1919 the gain in deposits was approximately two million eight hundred thousand dollars, while from July 1, 1919, to July 1, 1920, the increase in deposits was nearly five millions. The total aggregate of deposits in April, 1921, was approximately thirteen million dollars, the main bank and its branches serving twenty-five thousand depositors.

Gilbert Aubrey Davidson was born at Kentville, Nova Scotia, June 21, 1868 [tombstone says 1869], son of George Albert and Eliza J. (Palmeter) Davidson. His parents, who were natives of Nova Scotia, took up their residence at San Diego in 1886. Mr. Davidson was educated in Kings County Academy at Kentville, and his early business experience was acquired with the Dominion Atlantic Railway in Nova Scotia as general clerk, subsequently as ticket agent and telegraph operator. He was eighteen when he came to San Diego in 1886 and in December of that year became bookkeeper in the office of the Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, whose general offices were then in San Diego. The general offices were removed to Los Angeles in 1888, at which time he became cashier and paymaster for the lines west of Albuquerque, and retained that post of duty with the Santa Fe for seventeen years. In 1905 he was made auditor for the coast lines, but resigned and gave up a railroad career in 1907 to return to San Diego and organize the Southern Trust & Savings Bank. Mr. Davidson is also president of the East San Diego State Bank of East San Diego, president of the State Bank of Ramona, San Diego County, and during the war period was state director of War Savings for the Government for the southern half of the State of California, with general offices at Los Angeles.

During 1909-1910, Davidson served as president of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in making that body an effective factor in realizing San Diego's advantages as a commercial center, seaport and place of residence. In 1909, he proposed plans for a World's Fair in San Diego, to call attention to the city and bolster an economy still shaky from the Wall Street panic of 1907. The Chamber of Commerce authorized Davidson to appoint a committee to look into the idea. The result was the Panama-California Exposition of 1915-1916, which forever changed the face of Balboa Park and the future of San Diego. Davidson was elected president of the Exposition in 1914, and on April 12, 1914, rode in the first car to be driven across the newly-constructed Cabrillo Bridge in Balboa Park, with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy and Mayor Charles F. O'Neall.

Davidson married Rosetta Harben at Los Angeles October 21, 1896. He was President of the YMCA, Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church.

Lovely to hear from you on this, Jean, Brigid, Mark. So many have been hurt by this Organization's policies and doctrines in so many different ways. My heart feels for them all.

For me the time has finally come when our reaching out to each other just isn't enough any more. Whoever does or does not hear me, I need to say this and I need to say it LOUD. Our silence is their best protection. I will no longer allow my timidity to act as a shield for their wrong-doing.

I want to thank all of you for speaking out and taking a stand in your own ways. I am very inspired by you.

...*gulp*...You know, it would be kinda cool if we could do something like that every month, with a different person, a different story, a different plea...but probably pretty expensive, huh?

All I know is, with their arrogance, deceit, and lack of love, the WTS has created a world of hurt for others and can't forever remain untouched by it.

wow!

i just found this website and excitedly registered as i am df'd, and missing my family terribly.... i was hopeful that i might find a place to talk, share concerns and maybe vent occasionally.

i'm finding as i read however, that some people are incredibly angry and bitter and some of the comments seem mean and hurtful.

Thanks for your kind words.

I have very little hope that the GB will respond to this letter in any way whatsoever, but, I do think they should not keep quietly getting away with the harm they do. If we keep our painful experiences to ourselves they get to keep their dirty little secrets. I don't want that on my head. I want people to know about the harm, even though I would prefer not to bring attention to myself. And this may not be major, earth-shaking, news-making harm but it still hurts and the effects don't easily go away.

I think you have the right idea AuldSaul. And the "no natural affection" phrase certainly did come to mind.
