Jan,
Your series is absolutely fascinating!
I wish my Dad could read it. Alas, we are not in contact at this time.
I remember about 12 years ago, my Father informed me that he had given "health" (Not sure what the legal terminology is)power of attorney to his secretary ( Also a JW). His concern was that if he were to become unable to make his own decisions, healthwise, and if the question of blood transfusions was posed, my sister and I would not be able to force his contamination, and thus, jeopardize his salvation.
Some days later, I shared this information with my younger sister. We shot each other sly, knowing looks. It was decided if the occasion arose, we would intimidate Sister Secretary(an older woman) into "resigning" her power. At least, to be afraid to enforce it. The Tour De Force my Sis and I would present would overwhelming her. Thus, freeing us to be able to make what we thought to be an appropriate health decision made with unbiased, reliable, well researched medical information. Not the propaganda the WTS dishes out to it's spellbound members.
I suppose it can be argued that we should respect his wishes. But, because we know what information he bases his decision on, we can neither respect, or sit quietly by, while his life is needlessly in jeopardy. We are willing to risk the conquences (Not like it's the first time we have pissed him off!) of him surviving "tainted".
