Just keep in mind that if you burn video files on CD-Rs (and not to DVD-Rs), not only will you have less total available play time per disc, you may also have to burn them in a format like SVCD (or even worse VCD) if you intend to play them on many stand alone dvd players. If its just going to be files you intend to transport along and to be shared on computers or the web, then disregard the above.

Do you know what your last name means and where it comes from...?
by Justahuman24 ini have always been interested in what last names mean and where they come from and if someone famous in the past is related to us because of the same last name.
my last name comes from greek but my family is not greek.
it dates back to the year 700ce and it was around the time in europe when people were starting to get last names - i'm talking about the general people not monarchs.

My mother's maiden name means "holy angel" and the first part of it (Sant') is very common throughout Italy, making its origins fairly hard to deduce.
My father's surname is almost never recognized as Italian by many here in North America. It's meaning isn't all that apparent either even to an italian. One possible scenario is that the current name is a small deviation from another last name thats still floating around which is very similar in spelling and pronunciation to the italian word for "judge".
That same source went on about how the original person with that cognomen may have had judicial duties or administrative duties over a territory. Taking into consideration the fairly low socio-economic status of my father's immediate family and of most of the family ancestry he traced back, I'd say the descendants weren't as judicial with their courses of action.
I think a more accurate descriptor for me and my clan would be "judgemental"

What is Gnosticism and why do Christians dislike it ?
by 5go inaside from the fact that gnosis is greek for knowledge.
two things christians seem to dislike greeks(think animal house) and knowledge (other than knowledge of the christ of course).
seeing as they practice a form of it anyway.. gnostics believe that they have secret knowledge about god, humanity and the rest of the universe of which the general population was unaware.

Nathan,
Surely you're praising the "accurate knowledge" revealed to us through the FDS, and not the "knowledge -falsely so called" of this world?
Narkissos
Its not a very simple division of camps, you're right. Like LittleToe said, one should expect multiple influences on any particular movement. I definitely think most of the above points you made speak to Jewish Gnosticism having to be factored into the mix. Jewish gnostics would be prime candidates for johannine christianity for example. The mandeans are an interesting group. Essene-like and gnostic. But was the gnosic element stressed more later on? Gospel of Thomas, definitely argues that James was respected by several gnostics. Many jews respected James the Just too according to Josephus. But what about the other side? I wonder how much respect the jewish christians recipricated for those gnostics.

Needproof,
What about the jewish christians Paul butted heads with? I wouldn't say they were influenced by gnosticism, and they were clearly around before Paul put his spin on things. There's nothing gnostic that I can see in the "eucharist" as found in the Didache for example.

Good for you Kwin! I know you've got to focus on the practicalness of the education, but have fun with those electives. "Dinosaurs and the history of Life" as taught by the professor I had many many semesters ago was awesome. If you're majoring in biology, feel free to pm me, although its been more than a decade now, so I guess I'm the relic.

The proto-catholics definitely didn't like the docetic views on Christ that many gnostic sects had, and how it stripped the ransom of any meaning (in their eyes - at least).

Wannaexit,
I always kept more to myself, so its not like I was ever "in" with any clique, but you probably would say I was a familiar face. I'm male and in my early 30's. That's all I'll say for now.
I can understand you not wanting to reveal too much, especially if you want to keep from being df'ed for the sake of family. Its the same sitch for me.

DON'T BUY EPSON PRINTERS!
by Elsewhere ini have the epson stylus photo rx620 and it is probably the worst piece of crap printer i have ever owned!
the problem is with the print heads.
they get clogged but cannot be removed!

I think the reason why many people have had good experiences with HP printers is because many of their models have the print heads on the cartridges themselves.
You refill them repeatedly till they're too clogged up. Then you decide whether its a better deal to get another cartridge or pony up for another printer.
P.S. To any Mac users who'd like to attach HP inkjet printers to their Airport BaseStation (which can be a headache to get to work) check out this listing:
