Historical Worship of Jesus

i'm wondering if the assertion of christ's divinity arose as a natural theological progression from a simple early practice of worshipping christ.

it appears that none of the early controversies even centered on the worship of christ (to my knowledge), but only on the nature of christ.

even the arians worshipped christ, as did russellites/watchtower adherents until the 1950s.

I think that there was at least one group of early christians (the jewish-chrisitians, ebionites, nazoreans), that believed Jesus was the Messiah, but a human like the rest of us. I don't think it was likely that they worshipped him since he wasn't taken as divine in any way. But they revered his teachings about God and the correct understanding of God's Law that they said he imparted to them.

I tried to do a search for relevant stuff on this site but couldn't get it to work.

I think it speaks to the opposing duality that is me.....lacking in belief for as long as I can remember(practically atheist)....but at the same time fascinated with the notion of the spiritual, and having a desire to "enlightenment" be it genuinely spiritual or just more insight into human nature/the human condition.

I'm also very short, and would probably be mistaken for an Ewok if I were just to wear swimming trunks. A slimmer one though.

For me, Tom's beliefs on chemical imbalances have no bearing on Spielberg's remake. I'm counting on Steven's adaptation having a balanced use of special effects but not relying on them exclusively. I'd like for it to have stronger emphasis on the human reaction to this threat (like how people interact with loved ones and strangers during crises). I hope I won't be disappointed.

hello all, i've been reading your site for a couple of years now, and have found, for the most part, it to be very helpful.

i must say, at first i was very "scared" at what i might find, but contrary to what i grew up learning, there is a "wealth" of information outside of the watchtower organization.

i haven't attended meetings for about two years now, and like many i've read about, have spent many hours researching, telling myself "i'm not wrong for searching", and doing more research.

As I'm completely ignorant on biblical hebrew or greek, I can't add anything new and substantial to this thread. But I do want to say to scholar:

One side has shown many detailed examples ( I could somewhat follow it so very nicely done!), of similar constructions to the one in question, right from the bible, and they are always non-static or non-locative.

The notion that a language is as highly "fluid" in their constructions as you'd like us to accept, seems very impractical to me as one who's bilingual. Insisting on a particular translation, even if grammatically allowable, usually would get me nowhere. Whereas going with the most commonly used meanings will almost always make me get the point.

To me at least, you've only made repeated assertions (and the bit of support you've offered, like the LXX, turns out to not really do so). I'm still open minded though, if you have more biblical examples to support your stance please do so - (please also show the contructs in detail like the other side).

luke 20:33- 36 talks about there will be no marriage after the ressurection.

my wife doesnt understand this and i know nothing about it.

what is the wts stance on these verses?

The May 1, 2005 WT pg.22 first part of par.20:

Our discussion of the resurrection leaves some questions unanswered. How will Jehovah arrange matters for those who were married when they die? (Luke 20:34,35) Will resurrections take place in the area where people died? Will the resurrected come back to life close to their families? A host of other questions about the arrangements for the resurrection remain.

They need to keep this point fuzzy now more than ever. They've got to keep in check as many spots of hemoraging as possible...especially with the membership being a much older demographic nowadays.

This is awesome. The article mentioned that they were able to get embryonic stem cells to differentiate into the blood cells. What would also be cool is if they could devise a method that uses the hematopoietic stem cells naturally within the marrow (the blood cells actually originate from them). That way the whole touchy embryo issue may be side-stepped.

we need to examine the earliest known descriptions of the kind of crucifixion adopted by the romans and the specific terms they used to refer to it.

apparently the society believes that crux still meant "stake" in the second century a.d., when tacitus composed his annals.

i'm newish so in the great spirit of getting to know you (sing with me) getting to know all about you......what do you do for a living and do you enjoy it and if you could would you do something different?

- some classes and students really brighten my day and others are just downright nasty. Overall, its not a very fulfilling job, and I'm even considering switching fields if a full time position doesn't come up soon. Then again, teachers don't get much respect from parents and the general population either.

- If I could do anything, I'd like to be an investigative reporter and hope I could be good enough at it to make a difference.

Letting your fanatical need to keep your precious cult on its high pedestal, drive you to delude yourself and impugn ignoble motives on the real victims.

P.S. Guess what, I once went to a Hamilton congregation too. In fact, I can still socialize with a few circles of jws there and have a rather good standing among them. Maybe even better than yours. Point is: Be careful not to make any slanderous or libelous statements about Kwin up there. There may be a witness to it. The kind you may not like. Not a threat. Just some advice.

Is it morally OK to try to free people from the WTS and how?

If they have the possibility of a more meaningful, fulfilling, life by leaving the cult (which I personally applies to quite a bit of Jws), then I thinks its morally right to try and free them. I'll agree that there are some rare exceptions where the rigid control and dictation of the cult is actually better for the person.

I think the best way to help is to just stick to the facts and address any doubts they may be forming at first. To try and get any of the them to challenge their world view if they're still unquestioning about it, is, practically speaking, a waste of time, but morally speaking still a worthy thing to attempt. P.S. - I've tried with immediate family and have failed miserably, but at least I've tried. Now I'm slowly and carefully encouraging the questioning being done by a recent convert, who was first contacted by my pioneer sib.
