That's beautiful, and so typical of those guys. They have the most entertaining radio show I've ever listened to, and the only one I would actually turn on a radio to hear. (Versus just having the radio one while driving.)

on national public radio, there's a weekly hour-long program called "car talk with click and clack the tappet brothers".
it's been around for twenty years and is one of the most popular programs on npr.
it's website is http://cartalk.com (there's a podcast, too) and one of the features of the site (and program) is a puzzler where the audience is challenged with a (usually) automotive related conundrum.

what's your first-time score?.
sylvia.
I got a 4, but one of those was a guess. So an honest 3. (I guess'd at the others too, and missed 6 out of 10. So I'm dumb AND unlucky!)

here's a lovely highlight from the new issue of everyone's favorite 'journal.

The article contains one of its famous un-look-up-able quotes from the prestigious "one professor" who says, "A universe that began seems to demand a first cause; for who could imagine such an effect without a sufficient cause?"
This professor might be Dr. Walter L. Bradley, and may have come from a previous version of his article here: http://www.leaderu.com/real/ri9403/evidence.html.
I searched and found the quote on Google here: http://www.knowwhatyoubelieve.com/believe/evidence/does_god_exist.htm The bibliography for this quote points to the above article by Bradley. However, the quote itself doesn't appear in the article. There is also a google groups result that seems to suggest Bradley's article once contained the Society's quoted phrase.
As a noted con-man once remarked, "There's a sucker born every minute".

>>The "candor" is mostly a function of the presumption of authorship.
Richard Friedman in his book "Who Wrote the Bible?" makes the point that the modern version the first several books of the Bible are actually mergings of writings from several (four?) groups, edited by yet another group. Each group had its own agenda and recorded what it wanted recorded, making heroes of its heroes and bad-guys of its bad-guys. It is the editor that stitched it into a single tome reflecting the views of all of them. So no candor can be attributed to any of them -- the only "honesty" is of the disinterested sort, by the editor.

does anyone know how they come up with statements like how the chances of the genesis account being right on the progression of life (which it wasn't, actually) was 1 in 3,000,000+ or something?
it seems like the ol' blue book was written by someone who failed statistics in college.

i started a thread on this many years ago but did not have the documentation ready.
i recently unearthed the documentation and have put it into a pdf.. back about 15 years ago my best friend worked for a christian book store.
he used to order foreign bibles for the store and one evening i was thumbing through a thai bible on the shelf and was dumbstruck.
I understand James' point, but how would the congregation react if a brother's publishing company produced Bibles for a local church's bible giveaway? "While the idea of distributing Bibles is noble, Brother Printer, do you really believe Christendom won't be misusing these Bibles by promoting false religious ideas?"
I seriously doubt Brother Printer would get away with it.

They weren't the first to say that sort of thing. I was amazed when I was in pioneer school and happened to see a tv show about evolution-vs-creation. All the arguments they put forth were the same ones the Creation book used. I thought at the time, "Wow, they must've gotten ahold of a Creation book!". Idiot... :-)
