Now I feel SO bad for participating in such speculation. I hope Jah will recognize that I didn't actually START any threads on it. The women that YOU gave me -- they started the threads, and so I posted.
(Hey, it worked for Adam! -- Oh, wait...)

Athiest or Agnostic?
by real one inhow can one be considered an athiest?
athiest means you believe god does not exist.
agnostic means you don't know if god really exist.

>> Since we don't know everything how can we take such positions as athiest or agnostic?
How could we not? If we don't know, then the position "we don't know" seems reasonable. If we know a few things, and they don't seem to support the idea of a god, then "the evidence doesn't support it" makes sense.
How does a lack of information turn into a reason to BELIEVE something?

VERY short article entitled "How To Be A Spiritual Atheist": http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/2-13-2006-88828.asp
Real one, consider the position you're suggesting. No one could say anything about anything until they knew everything about everything. Does that really seem practical to you? Can you honestly say you've learned everything about Islam? About Hinduism? About anything other than your own religion?
This is why I don't speak in absolutes, by and large.
I think OJ was guilty. But he might not have been. I just think it's likely.
I don't think there's a god. There might be, I just don't think it's likely.

>> Athiest means you believe God does not exist, correct?
"Believe" means something different to you and to me, I think. I "believe" my car is out in the parking lot. I can't be certain, of course. It may have been stolen. I could go check and THEN I'd be certain.
I believe there's no god. But I can't check, so I can't be certain.
A belief in your world carries a level of certainty that just doesn't exist in my world.
My muslim-agnostic friend suggested this way of thinking about it:
An atheist believes the evidence is insufficient to support belief in the existence of a god.
An agnostic believes it is impossible to know if a god exists.Do you see a difference? Sounds like orangeish-red and reddish-orange to me..

Maybe it would help if you told me what your definition of an atheist is? You've gotten some good ones from other posters here, but perhaps yours is different.

Like any other religious tag, you make up your own definition and say, "That's me!"
Seriously, very few atheists say "There is absolutely, positively no chance at all of there being any sort of god" which sort of flies in the face of the dictionary definition. I think the likelihood of a loving god existing is vanishingly low, and the likelihood of unconcerned but powerful creator-god is pretty low.
So I leave open the possibility that such a being exists. And yet I claim I'm an atheist.
One of my best friends is an agnostic-leaning muslim. Another close friend is a wiccan-leaning agnostic. "Absolutes" don't enter my sphere much anymore! ;-)

VERY cool, Spy -- thank you! I would love to have seen the JW's faces when they heard this.
I'll also mention how very strange it was to listen to. I haven't been to the hall in 3 years. I've read lots of dub-speak on this forum, but always in the context of deconstructing it or making fun of it. Listening to this guy with his dramatic pauses and practiced emphasis, reading a letter from someone that truly feels they have the authority to tell others how to spend their Tuesday evenings... it was surreal.
Thank God I'm an atheist...

I really do think I brush up against Dissociative Disorder now and again. I feel like several people, or no people at all. Like my life is a movie and I'm just watching it. It doesn't help that I tend not to believe in the "self" concept.
Not all the time though. It isn't crippling or even all that bothersome. Just a thing that is.
