have any of you researchedthe origins of the practice of baptism?
as far as i can determine, there's no mention of it, much less as a requirement, in the torah or any of the old testament.. unless i'm missing something, it appears suddenly with john the baptist (oh, excuse me, wt lurkers, john the baptiser).. so then, if all of this is as it appears, then it's fair to conclude that the practice is of extra-biblical (as in ``pagan'' or ``heathen'') origins.
if true, then we have a fascinating example of how john, then jesus, appropriated a pagan custom because of its suitability as a symbol; in this case, of dying to a former life course and awakening to another.
When John the Baptist was down at Jordan, dipping people into the muddy waters, The Pharisees came down from Jerusalem and asked if he was Eligah or the Prophet. In the days of Eligah and his successor Elisha, Naaman, an army officer from Syria, came and asked for his leprosy to be cured. Elisha told him to go dip himself in the Jordan seven times, he objected, said his own rivers in his country were a lot cleaner. He was prevailed upon to change his mind and was cured.
So my understanding is, that the Jews were asking if he was Eligah/Elisha because Naaman was cured in the Jordan. They thought that John was presumptuosly doing the work of former prophetes.

i'm talking about the rather delightful lady on the intro page at * http://www.watchtower.org/.
nice hat too:.
englishma.. nostalgia isn't what it used to be....
Hey Guys, and especially the Gals,
You're missing the main message on their page. The doll on the left, gussied up is wearing a hat, a big white, pannama hat, she has been to Panana on a cruise ship or serving where need is great. The hat is white, purity, like Hopalong Cassidy, cowboy from the from the thirties. Bad guys wear black hats. She looks pretty fierce to me, someone I don't want to mess with. Must be DO's wife.
The the burned out babe on the left, holding onto her head is not wearing a hat, she is not submissive, probably been visiting the apostate's board. Hence she is enduring pain. Probably pregnant too. Not making wise use of her time.
The message to all you gals out there, wear a hat, be in style, wear a Panama hat, no kerchiefs or bandannas. and demonstrate submission, only then you get a cruise to the Caribbean.
belbab, gotta hide this from the missus
.
one more topic.. my wife just called up to tell me that she was over my parents before a doctor's visit, chatting with my mother, when my crazed jw father threw my small 14 year old brother down the stairs and punched him for not wanting to study.. i've been beat, thrown down stairs, had potted plants thrown at me, chased around the house, and such, for not wanting to do the family study.. this is what the "truth" does to people, all you loyal jw's....take note...... (i'm so angry i'm shaking).
ashi.
p.s-my father said he was leaving my mother--oh god, pretty please, you motherf**ker.
Ashitaka,
I don't know where you live or any details of who you are, if I did I would send the authorities in your neighbourhood a copy of this post.
If I lived next door to you, do you think I would stop and ask a fourteen year old boy for his permission, or ask the old man for his permission. I would grab the phone and phone 911 and report the incident.
Is there anyone outthere that can forward this post to The Watchtower Society in Brooklyn as a demonstration of the bullshit going on out there. Or give me some e=mail addresses and I will do it myself.
belbab,
justice 19 concern for lost sheep.
jesus said, what do you think?
if any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine sheep, and go to the mountains, and seek that which goes astray?
Amazing,
This truly is an amazing story. I have often contemplated the text you quoted above. I often wondered why the shepherd would leave ninety nine, and go and search for the lost one. Wouldn't the ninety nine be in danger of being unprotected. I do not believe it is only for completion, to round off the number to one hundred as the WT has published.
No, I believe the shepherd must go an seek the lost one, because that one has the key to the shepherds failure to be a perfect shepherd. Somehow the shepherd did not see to the needs of the lost one and the lost one had to leave and got lost. By seeking and communicating with the lost one, the shepherd sees himself in a mirror and then can make adjustments in his own course of conduct.
Your relating of this incident demonstrates clearly whether the elders who forgot and were unaware of what was taking place before their very eyes demonstrates they were failures as shepherds.

don't you just love the uk?.
to justify some hefty taxes rises on the horizon, we are aiming for our health service to become 'average' be the end of 4 years.
it is already the largest employer in europe (i think only the russian army had more people) and the bottemless pit needs more money.. i used to do work for some health authorities and from my experience i think the real problem is mis-management and waste.
Hi Outlaw,
I am not too far away from you and I am always looking for contacts not too far away. Send me an e-mail if you want to touch bases. You can come too, Simon if you ever are in this area. Wet windy and snow today, ugh!

LB,
It says, paraphrasing, when you see the disgusting thing standing in the holy place, flee.
It says, Get out of her my people,
It says when you see the City of Peace, surrounded, infested with encamped armies, flee to where they can't catch you, the mountains.
I don't see anything here that says, stop and write a letter first, just Move your ass on out! Call your own shots.
belbab, crowing, from outside the camp.
with this post i enter the hallowed ranks of the jedi class.
may the force be with you.. yerusalyim.

the following transcript was sent to me anonymously.
while i can't verify the source it seems to be in line with the comments of messenger.
i have to mention the key point of crime being a personal decision.
Quote: Four: Child abuse is a crime.
They are saying that child abuse is a crime not as the WTs opinion, but under the laws of the land.
Never -- and we'll emphasize that -- never suggest to anyone that they should not report an allegation of child abuse to the police or other authorities.
The anyone is not limited to the victims or relatives of the victims. It means if one of the elders who hears of the abuse decides to jump ship and mentions that it should be reported, he cannot be advised not to do it. He will not be sanctioned that is, punished for doing it. Not openly punished, but rest assured he will be given a wide berth and quietly be shown out the door with a black mark labelled in the atmosphere about him.
If asked,(otherwise keep mum) make it clear that whether to report the matter to the authorities, is a personal decision for each individual to make, and there are no congregation sanctions for either decision. That is, no elder will criticize or punish anyone who reports such an allegation to the authorities.
They have placed the reporting of child abuse in the same category as joining the military, taking blood, or joining a church. It is a personal decision to do it, and one cannot be openly reprimanded for it, but you will be on the sly.
If an elder keeps quiet about the abuse, there will also be no congregation sanctions for his decision. That is, within the WT he will not be critisized but will receive WT support. But he is still liable for any breach of law that requires his knowledge of child abuse to be reported, and can be charged with hiding child abuse. He is still open to charges of criminal negligence in not reporting the crime.
Yes, nothing has changed, child abusers are still protected if the victims are convinced not to report it. If the elders are in agreement not to report it and none of them have the guts to blow the whistle, the child abuser is still protected within the congregation. Furthermore the WT Society will be legally out of the picture (they hope) and any elders charged will defended under clergy privilege.
I hope my thoughts here are comprehensible.

charitable status is the obvious point of weakness re the wts.
it in no way deserves it.
i am interested in forming a discussion group or similar regarding it...away from public view.
