There was several periods like that, not only outbreak of Black Death in Europe at 1350's. Population of Europe continued to decline well until end of the 15th century.
Similar period of decline and devastation occured around 530 AC when plague devastated what was reminder of late Antiquity, and as mentioned in writtings of Proccopius. The percentage of dead people was probably even higher that that of Middle Ages.
In our modern time I would like to mention of WWII and its devastation that brought upon the world. But as millions of people suffered and were killed, no Armageddon occurred. Some very old JW are now desillusion, because instead of Great suffering, people are living far better and longer than ever before. I cannot imagine that someone would claim, that our current living standard, health care, level of public services, and personal freedom is worse then before 1914. I would advice to visit some exibits about life of our ancestors.

ARMAGEDDON has *ALREADY* HAPPENED
by Quotes inin response to you know's thread ( http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/thread.asp?id=24539&site=3) wherein he posits that "armageddon could happen".. (give me one second to get my tongue planted firmly in my cheek.... ok... got it).
consider the following (taken from http://www.byu.edu/ipt/projects/middleages/lifetimes/plague.html).
the black death: bubonic plague.

MORE ON 1975, FOR MUSKY
by Liberty inalong with musky's 1975 post i've just seen another so i wanted to try and reach musky again and reach others who wonder about the reality of the society's 1975 speculations.
af and others have done an excellent job documenting what was actually said by the watchtower society through their own official publications and spokesmen.
as a person who was actually there in those heady times of the late 60's and early 70's these official documents confirm what my memory tells me i knew all along, that of course the society actively promoted 1975 as a "marked date" or a date of "great significance" at the very least.

I do not remember 1975, but I heard a lot about it. I remember year 1989, (1914+3.5+70), the year of the End, especially in our part of world, Eastern Europe. But years went on, without the signs of Great Suffering, people lives and income improved ever since from 1914. The sadest thing is to see people who hold that the Generation of 1914 would see the End and never dies. Only a few people remind well into their 90's who were born before 1914. I remember who one elder in our KH red every year government census of how many people are still alive and born prior 1910. As the number was declining, it was the sign, and he used to say, the Armageddon would be here within the year (I am sure he says it till today for good twenty-five years).
I heard recently a new date set (2034, 1914+120), maybe we will find out, that the last days did not start in 1914 but somewhere close to our time. By then, nobody will remember 1975, 1989 or the Generation of the 1914. -
