It all comes back to the real basis for religion. Have a look at most of the religions out there and you will find that their foundations are based on the desire of the important people to control or influence the underlings. DO THIS OR YOU WILL DIE seems to be the overriding teaching. Power and control is the object, nothing else. People live their lives in the constant belief that there is something better if they toe the line and, therefore waste their lives in the process. You only get one shot at life so use it to the full!

No New Order?
by techton ini'm a newbie here...but i remember posts about jesus never having mentioned the prospect of eternal life on earth.......my personal theory is that as the numbers of jw's began to go past 144,000 in the mid-1930s, it was felt that an explanation had to be offered to the rank-and-file, and the idea of the "great crowd" living eternally on earth fit the bill......so much so that an explosion of numbers began because no one wanted to be left out on the prospect of eternal life in paradise.. if a business can tell people something, and it dramatically increases traffic, isn't the temptation too great?
wouldn't, in time, the benefits seem to outweigh the negatives (such as a compromise to honesty, and, in fact, wouldn't the original lie be lost to the sands of time?.

JW's and the question of alien existence
by Monski init seems to me that jw's do not believe in the existence of alien beings as the bible has nothing to say on the matter.
everything seems to revolve around the planet earth and the possibility of there being alien life is considered to be apostate.
sounds a bit like the oppression that galileo received from the catholic church when he suggested that the earth moved around the sun and not vice-versa!.

If the theory of creation is correct, then it could be that Jehovah has given us up as a bad job or is simply waiting to see how we deal with the mess we have made. Meanwhile, he might have created another civilisation of humans in another galaxy that have not rejected him and are still perfect. After all, why did he create such a vast universe? We can't even see most of it, even with the array of technology we have developed.
It would be ironic if the JW's are striving to be saved when all the attention is being directed to a "better" society elsewhere. There could be hundreds, thousands or millions of other experiments going on. He is the all-powerful after all. It would be stupid to believe that we are the only ones, unless of course there is no truth behind any of the WT's teachings!

I like your posts Terry. Always a thought provoking read.
This one just shows how blinded JW's are. It seems that everything inexplicable requires faith. An easy way out. Question askers are considered to be apostates and those who show reasoning are disfellowshipped! I'm glad I'm one of those "shunned" people! At least I don't have to listen to the drivel anymore.

Dinosaurs?
by Monski ina popular jw teaser, i know?
but does anyone know exactly how they stand on it?
i would love to know.

I think the question was "how do they stand on them?" not "how do they stand?" So, the "funny" reply would have been "on their backs".
Thank you to all who gave sensible replies, particularly Terry. Comprehensive or what? Cheers.

THE WEAKEST LINK---fatal flaws in Watchtower Chronology
by Terry inwatchtower chronology suffers from weak logical links.
after all, they start with an unproven premise and begin linking and linking and linking and suddenly they produce the rabbit out of the hat.
1914 is the rabbit .

You all have wonderful explanations of all this stuff found in the book of Daniel. Makes great reading. I just wonder why someone closer to recent times hasn't been inspired by god to write a modern bible that everyone can understand. Surely that would be a sensible way to "get the message across". Why doesn't Daniel be re-written to say:
"The Gentile times will end in A.D 1914 and the "end " will come within about 100 years of then." Or is that too easy?

Wish they'd come up with this idea when I was leaving school. I might not be in a dead-end job with no prospects now.

Overpopulation in the "Paradise" Earth!
by Leolaia injw doctrine teaches that the 1,000 years of christ corresponds to "judgment day," and everyone who has not already been judged will be resurrected from the dead.
the exceptions would be those who died during the flood, the destruction of sodom and gomorrah, and a few odd individuals.
but that's only the people living today.

You really think that's what will happen? I getting my act together and getting reinstated! Possibilities of space travel and repopulating excercises! I can't miss that!

Oh - I get it! So, perhaps Jehovah will remove the DESIRE for sex and gender will no longer be important. In fact, eventually all humans will be the same gender. Ooops, am I implying evolution? Naughty me!
