last night my wife came home from a book study at which the topic of the star of bethlehem was raised.
she asked me (ubm) whether i was taught that the star of bethlehem was from jehovah (god) or the demons.
the response from her was that it was from the demons as (i think that this was the response as my interest was evaporating faster than ether) "the light shone on herod first" plus 1 or 2 other reasons.. first time i've heard this line.
I think this was also taught in the "Greatest Man that ever lived" book as well. I remember reading that and it making perfect sense to me. Man was I brainwashed.
I recently saw a show on the history channel that talked about the "sign" in the night sky that is mentioned in the Gospel. They showed how it could have simply been a convergance of 3 planets. However, to 3 astrologers this would have been a powerful sign.

hopefully it will be a beautiful weekend.
we always get together with our entire family (kids and grandkids) for an all day picnic and fun and then watch the small town parades.
and then this weekend we will be playing "catch-up" with outdoor projects on the house that we couldn't get to because of the rain.

I find it funny that Christians will get all upset that someone writes a book that puts forth the idea that a jewish man named Jesus might have been married and had a kid.
But have no problem believing that a teenage girl magically got pregnant by God, gave birth to a son name Jesus that grew up and claimed to be the son of God and healed people. Also believe that he brought people back to life, was killed by the Romans but was brought back to life himself 3 days later and ascended to heaven.
not being raised as a jw, i went to many church weddings, mostly in catholic churches.
all the times i went to jw weddings i thought it unusual that they had their own vows, much different from the wedding vows used elsewhere.
i remembered jws mentioning "divine temination" of marriages to me and thought the vows reflected that thought.
to be my wedded husband, to love and to cherish and deeply respect
Funny how only the vows for the wife mention respect. I guess the husband doesn't have to respect his wife.
Respect is earned not given.
when i was a teenager my best friends little brother (baby) died because he was refused a blood transfussion.
it really bothered me even though i thought they did the right thing.. now that i'm out i was talking to my wife about it and the whole blood thing and came to the realization that they did it just to save themselves.. think about it.
if you allow your child to have a blood transfusion, who is god going to blame?
And what if after 10 or 20 years they realize it's not the "truth"
That has to be the most sickening feeling there is. Knowing that you let your child die for a cult.
That would drive me insane.

Think about it. If you allow your child to have a blood transfusion, who is God going to blame? You or the child?
Obviously he will blame you. Even the society says that it's not the child's fault if the parents allow a blood transfusion.
So in my opinion they are just selfishly saving themselves.
I for one would gladly die to save my child. And if God wants to kill me for saving my child's life, then so be it.
P.S. I don't have any children yet, and I totally disagree with the blood policy.
i can understand some of the shorthand terms used on this site but could anyone elighten me on the above?
also please list any terms that pertain to this site with their explanation so that i can understand everybody's threads a bit more easily.

O.K. It's official. We are all a bunch of geeks. We know entirely too much about Star Trek.

just wanted to start a topic on an event that will occur sometime later this year - namely my sister is to be married.
she is a witness as is her boyfriend, none of his family are in but only myself and my dad are not (he has never joined) from my sister imediate family.
so i was wondering what to expect, what experiences people here have had being someone who has left and then later been disfellowshipped, and then finding they might be invited to a witness wedding?
On the flipside. My mother and sister wouldn't come to my wedding because I no longer go to the meeting and was marrying a "worldly" person. Yet they had no problem coming to visit and stay the weekend.
