I speak English....took some Spanish but didn't do very well although I tried hard. I speak "American grunt" that would be white trash mixed with some ebonics and depression era words. Does that count as a second language?

The Black & White Thinking of Jehovah's Witnesses---Are You Still Affected?
by minimus inas witnesses, we were taught how to think.
we were force fed whatever "mother" told us was best for us.
we were constantly having ideas "inculcated" into us.

Carmel's right about going to college...it did knock the black and white right out of me. Sometimes though I get the feeling that it would be nice if things were more black and white to me now (even if I know that's not reality) I usually only feel this way when I have to make a big decision about something. I think that (decision making) is something that's been a struggle for me to deal with. I'm doing pretty well but when you've had pretty much all your life decisions made according to JW teachings it can be difficult sometimes. But that's life, right?

JWs, ex-JWs and Non-JWs
by CeriseRose ini'm going to preface these comments with a disclaimer: in no way am i meaning these observations to be inflamatory, exclusionary, or to devalue anyone.
i believe everyone has a right to their opinion, and observations, and to share themwithin the terms of the board.
i also believe that there is learning to be found from a variety of sources.

CeriseRose-I didn't mean to lessen anyones feelings (convert or non). The whole being "born in it issue" is just something I'm having to work on a lot more lately....

Narkissos- What you say is very true, just hard to remember sometimes. Thanks for the wise words.

THOSE IN THE UK: I need some new music!!
by Nosferatu inas of late, i've been trying to find some new music.
lately, i've been getting stuff that was fairly popular in the uk that didn't even make a dent here in north america.
i've been downloading stuff like bucks fizz, old tyrannosaurus rex, suzie quattro, adam & the ants, shampoo, shakin' stevens, etc, etc.

Narkissos-Okay....I think I know what you're saying. I in no means want to give the impression that I see myself as a victim because I was born into it. What I will say is that I think it's a little different when you convert (at the age of thirteen I'm not so sure). I would say that everyone bares some responsibility if they take an active part and so on but I feel that when you're raised in it you don't know anything different. And maybe there is some resentment on my part at times towards people who have converted. Its not overt, it's just something I feel sometimes. If I'm totally misunderstanding what you wrote in the last post please tell me...I don't want to get you wrong.

mmm....I know what you mean. I've seen some posts where it was mentioned that there were people in this forum that never were JW. On the one hand I'd like to say that it would be good if most people got past this...on the other hand, I believe it's hard to take somebody's opinion seriously if they haven't been through the same experience. I don't ever want to resent people for that but sometimes I do. It hasn't happened on this board yet but I know in my life I tend to not take other peoples opinions seriously when it comes to JWs unless I know that they have been in the religion. I think a lot of us deal with resentment not just towards people who have opinions about JWs but also towards some of our fellow ex-JWs. OR maybe it's just me...at times I tend to resent people who converted as opposed to being raised JW. I'm not sure if it's completely rational-I don't want to resent converts but I can't help but sometimes think that they had a choice, but those of us who were born into it didn't.

Demons and feathers
by Narkissos inbrummie's thread about "unwritten prophecies" made me think more broadly about unwritten stuff among jws.
this one is not a prophecy, sounds more like a "urban legend".. there were stories circulating among french jws in the 70's about people suffering of some unexplained illness, until strange demonic "artworks" were discovered in the feathers of their pillows.
some were almost dying as the "work" was almost completed.

Narkissos- I don't think it (smurfs being demonized) was ever written in any JW literature. I remember hearing about it from some Witness cousins and then later hearing other witnesses talk about it.

Why do many religious people dislike non-religious people?
by Elsewhere ini've noticed that usually when someone who is very religious finds out that i am an atheist, they become very agitated even though i never actually said anything negative about their religion.. are they embarrassed?.
do they think i am condemning them?.
do they see me as a threat?.

I suspect they might think that you are against what the believe...as in refuting everything they hold dear. Not sure if I'm explaining what I mean properly. I guess, in my experience, it's similar to the treatment of a rebellious teenager--like your being an atheist just to spite them.

maybe it's conceptual and we're only supposed to think about the prayer.
