There's no turning back now...
by undercover inanalogy #1:.
the shots at fort sumter have been fired...the confederates have declared war.. but before the shot was fired, the rebels were whipped into a frenzy ready to go to battle as soon as the word was given.. hopes of victory were pinned on this unnamed weapon which would fire the shot.. now that the weapon has been unveiled and the first shot fired, what will the established union do?
they have more resources, more money, more soldiers, more lawyers.. now that the war has started, how will the confederates carry out their battle plan?

I see what you're getting at... but analogy #1 I'm having a hard time with....
the comparison of ex-JWs here to slave owners or rather poor southern white boys wanting to be slave owners fighting for their right to own slaves and keep their cotton taxes to themselves is no good.
Never felt bad or any kinship with the Confederates. -

Help me find a poem: "This is my box"
by seattleniceguy indoes anyone remember this poem?
it was all about a person who lived in a box that they loved.
they box made them feel safe and sound, and they knew they could trust the people inside their box, but they were afraid of the world outside.

hmmm...I know someone a few months ago (I think) had a thread for favorite poems to be posted...
Sorry I'm not more help. I'll try and bump this thread so others will see it--I know the feeling and I hate it. -

Were your parents hypocrits?
by Mysterious indid your parents hold you up to higher jw standards than they held themselves or force you to live up to things they never did if they were raised in the truth?.
i know when my mother was a teenager they used to watch bewitched all the time and no one took it seriously.
they never missed an episode.

YES. My mother expected things out of her kids she never expected out of herself. The biggest one being that she expected unconditional love from her kids but she shunned her own mother. She never let us watch certain cartoons because she said they were violent yet she always had certain shows (full of guns and murders) she couldn't miss. She expected for us to not except presents for Christmas and our birthdays...but she did. She also expected us to go out on service and go to meetings even though at a certain point she had stopped doing it herself.

do you know if it's older or more recent? children's poetry, 7 stanza or whatever? Where and when do you remember reading or hearing it?
Just think more information might help to narrow it down. -

Is it this one?
My own place
no one can find
It took me years
To fix it all up
No it's not a prison
I can come and go
But this is my place
Where nobody knows
Silence me here
Wash me with water
Bathe me with fire
So I can grow young again
This is my Box
I hold in my heart
And when I die
It will fade away.... -

Are JW's too paralyzed to leave?
by moshe ini was contemplating how bad the news will have to be to get the jw's to quit the organization.
then i remembered hurricane katrina and all the people trapped in the superdome for days on end.
one guy acted on his own and stole a school bus to rescue a group and take them to houston.

good post moshe. Your two examples bring up a lot for me. I remember the young kid that took the bus well. I really remember a tv reporter asking him about "stealing" the bus and his defiant response, "I BORROWED IT." I would hope I would have some of that character in me if faced with something as extreme as what he was facing.
When thinking about Jonestown though, there for sure were true belivers in Jones and ready to do whatever needed to follow his word. BUT in reading about it all, I know that some of those found dead had bullets in them. Also, when giving out the deadly drink it was given to children first...in this way the parents had no hope and for many no reason to live. Jim Jones put physical fear into people before hand as well. So I guess by this...while I think there were many People's Temple members that believed very much...I think there were many whom had independant thoughts but because of the fear of physical abuse as well as the absolute loss of their family members, they didn't leave or in some situations couldn't.
I'm not trying to get off topic here just trying to point out that when faced with a crisis or even faced with a cult there it can be very complicated and hard to see clearly. -

Do you vote?
by MsMcDucket ini was just wondering if anyone here votes in the elections?
considering how badly that some of us did on that test, i wonder if anyone is even concerned with politics?
do you care who your congressman is for your state?
-

I vote every election day. I care who represents me and more often than not write them nasty e-mails that I know they never read (I get "thank you" e-mails back everytime) when they screw their voters over.

What other religions do this?
by AK - Jeff indo not go to war preach door to door believe that christ and god are separate persons avoid the use of blood transfusions believe the dead are just dead believe in a paradise earth not just heaven do not vote do not salute the flag do not celebrate holidays etc
my point is this - jw's claim divine appointment, and they attempt to defend it by these and other 'special doctrine'.
some, in seeking to create doubts have hit this brick wall.

Well most quakers and amish don't go to war. Mormons preach door to door...and so do some other pentacostle type religions in my area. Muslims believe christ and god are separate. I went to elementary school with some muslim kids that wouldn't salute the flag. I know these kids weren't being brought up the same way as alot of others in Islam though. Again- the muslim kids I went to school with would go to the library during celebrations...same as me. And they resented it as much as I did...
