oldflame- It's you're right to answer your kids when asked and even otherwise...My thinking is that this is a teacher at a school where all kids probably aren't brought up to believe the same things and where teachers don't always personally agree with what some kids believe. BUT it's not a teacher's say to tell 1st graders what's true or not.
You know, when I was in the 3rd grade the teacher I had wanted us to do a math assignment sheet that had to do with Holloween. After building up my courage I went up to her and told her I couldn't do it. Her response was, YOU'LL DO IT OR YOU WON'T GET A GRADE--I'M SO SICK OF THIS JEHOVAH'S WITNESS" THIS AND THAT. I can understand her being frustrated but it really doesn't matter if she agreed or not...if she was in such strong disagreement she should have spoken to my mother...not taken it out on an 8 year old. It wasn't her say...I'm big on keeping principles but when you're teaching kids that don't believe the same (which is usual) you should suck it up...or if you have that big of a problem with it, excuse yourself from the room and inform the school officials you're leaving and why. -

No, but see willow...one of my nephews is 12 and believed until he was 10 that santa exixted. He figured out on his own that there was no such thing BUT thinks it's cool that his little brother and sister believe it and is working on a little plot for tonight--because he said his younger brother deserved "a little more time" to believe.
It's not always a huge disappointment for kids (so long as uptight subsitute teachers aren't involved with 1st graders). Sometimes they just figure it out and end up thinking it was nice to have believed in it for a little while. I just think they should be given that time to believe whatever crazy imaginary stuff they can, they won't be crushed if their just let to grow out of it.
Although I'm with Ian...long live santa! It's a nice thing to believe in...a guy going around giving kids presents without payment. That's the christmas spirit, isn't it? -

"They also need to understand what is PRETEND and what's REALITY."
willow, they figure this all out on their own. No one discouraged me from thinking bugsbunny wasn't real...I figured it out. I also didn't have people telling demons were make believe but trust me...even though adults were around drilling demon stories in my head, at a certain point I knew it wasn't logical or real.
PS- I believe god is as realistic as santa... or rather god is another "imaginary icon" just like santa. This doesn't mean I have to spoil people's fun, does it? Especially when they are little kids, right? -

give me a break...you know...deep sigh...I'm and athiest. I don't believe in Santa and never did because I was brought up a JW. But what the hell is the problem with 1st graders believing in make-believe? It's BS in blaming parents or comparing it to lying or comparing it to the WTS. It's a nice little dream little kids should be able to induldge in BECAUSE THEY'RE LITTLE KIDS. They grow out of it soon enough, why not just let them enjoy themselves as kids rather than killing all the magic before the age of 12?
Jesus, I wish I could have believed in that stuff instead of having all the imagination attempted to be crushed out of me and my soul broken by the WTS and it's followers. -

I'm not happy all the time but I'm happy at least once a day. Yesterday, I went out to eat with my older sister and my neice after some christmas shopping. We were waiting for a table when a man darted straight for my neice and asked if she'd been good this year. She said yes. Then he handed her a $30 gift card for the place we were eating at and darted for the door. I was floored this guy would do that. A few minutes later my niece asked my sister and me if we needed it. We both said no...so she said that when we were done eating she was going to give it to someone else. We went to a store afterward and the guy ringing me up was nice and so my niece whipped out the card, said merry christmas and all I heard was "THANK YOU!" to my niece as we walked out. I'm happy right now writing this.
It made my month. -

Double Standard with gender???
by under74 inok--this came up because of another thread.
it didn't really belong on the thread in question so i thought i'd start a new one.
my thinking is that there is a big double standard not just because of religious beliefs but because people are taught that-- men are more sexual than women, men think more about sex than women, men take advantage of this way of thinking and women don't.

Golf- I understand what you're saying and think it's a good point. My complaint though has to do more with people (both men and women) treating females (daughters, sisters, wifes, cousins) differently than they do their sons and so on, and assuming or maybe more attributing an individuals actions with their gender. Pay and politics is another web.

well, thank you all very much for the posts...would have posted sooner but christmas obligations.
Spectrum- my quarrel with you wasn't brought on by hysterical "women type" feelings...it was brought on by your comment that since you've lived with women you know how they all are. It's too easy to pigeon hole people in that way so you won't actually have to get to know them as individuals.
