Seems that Pastor Russell was a very popular figure at the time he was asked, by the editor, to write articles for the Overland Monthly in 1908. He started off with a series on "The Divine Purpose", and continued contributing articles until his death in 1916. The editor may or may not have had an interest in Russell's message, but he could certainly recognize the importance of having such a well-known personage writing for his periodical. I believe Russell's Overland articles were particular to that publication.
