  Shunning in the 60's

  as you know i just returned from visiting my great-aunt whom i hadn't seen in 40 years (she's still a jw).

  i asked her if she shunned my mother when she was disfellowshipped in 1964. she said they society did not promote shunning at this time.

  is this true?

  Hi all!

  I wonder who wrote that 'enlightening' article on shunning. I also wonder if it was someone who has since suffered the consequences of the 'shunning' rules.

  Was it worth meeting with the judicial committee?

  for those of you who met with a judicial committee and were subsequently da'd or df'd, was it worth the time and effort?

  did the elders let you speak your piece, or were they only interested in hearing that key word or phrase that would allow them to act?

  was there genuine interest shown, proboing questions asked, did they really want to know how you felt?

  my parents went to the assembly this weekend.

  they were telling me about disciplining children... the speaker was saying how all babies are born selfish and demanding for their own needs and not anyone elses.

  the jist of the talk being about discipline, and training children ...ie taking them out for a good beating.. well, i don't know if any of you have ever 'just seen red!

  Dansk - now you have to move forward. Show them your love every day and if one of them won't listen, keep telling them any way. There is nothing to fear in speaking the truth about how you feel.

  Surely these kangaroo court hearings are just the ultimate ego trip for window cleaner, sales person, whatever Mr nobody, Elders.

  Why go?

  It must be such a power trip to have Jehovah give you the power of life and death over some silly little dub who has turned up, when you have demanded their presence and then get to don the little black cap of doom and switch off their hopes of eternal life!

  I expect to be summoned to such a meeting in due course and my answer will be loud and clear:

  'Bugger off!"

  ((((((love11))))))) - That is a really horrific story of true and vicious abuse. It seems to me it was made much worse by the "Jehovah is testing you" method that your mother used to control you so that you could not ask for help.

  You are bang on track with finding that you need to understand what happened to you and why your parents treated you so wickedly. That's the only way to get over this terrible start you had in your life.

  Now, the time has come to enjoy life and to start living. Thank goodness you survived to tell your tale, and I'm so glad you're out and free.

  Forgive, but don't forget and make sure that YOU are the one who is always in control from now on.

  Children who are JWs, who are abused, in any way are doubly trapped because they actually believe that the very people who might be able to help them are their enemies because of JW teachings. That's why they must not be forgotten. That's where the Silent Lamb Organization comes in and everyone else should not be afraid to speak up for these children.

  any of you peoples ever watched that wonderful film 'secondhand lions'?.

  it's about a young boy who goes to live with two elderly uncles who have lived very full and wild lives.

  it's a great film.

  well, after being shunned by my realtions for the last few years, except for parents and sister i've decided that i will no longer play by the rules of the jw cult game.

  i have had contact with several cousins, obviously too gob smacked by my cheek to shun in any way shape or form and have began wriggling my way into their awareness again.

  i intend to be like a kill and destroy white blood cell that gradually wreaks havoc with their jw cells and destroys...repeat destroys all that jw crap that is in them.

  TheEdge - Yes it is! How can they not invite their eldest and wicked naughty youngest daughter?

  mtbatoon -I'm not too keen on the word 'bustle'. I prefer 'hustle'! (She says, suddenly frowning thinking of all the possible connotations of the word and wondering whether she should have stuck with 'bustle'!)
