congratulations to the spanish people, who voted the socialists to power as a protest against the conservative government's supporting bush's war on iraq, and for claiming the madrid bombs were acts of the eta nationalists and not an al-qaida attack because of the war on iraq.. so one government has fallen, and there are many more to come, bush.. who says these days ain't fun?

So you believe that Islamofascists believe that, although they believe in Allah and Islam, that Christianity's okay too? Think back to the video's of Osama. The point he keeps driving home is that the USA and their supporters are the "enemy," what happened on 9/11 was "good", that god will back him in destroying the "enemy", the Western world. Do you see this as religious toleration? What are the track record of so many nations in the middle east in promoting religious toleration? Is not in fact, the OPPOSITE true?

I'm not sure. But I question why a nation in the 21st century can be ruled by a group who severely oppresses women, finds them unworthy of education, fit only for reproduction. I suppose rather than appealing to basic human rights in outrage, we should try to "understand" what caused the ruling group to hate women so much in the first place.

That is precisely your line of reasoning. Find out *why* brutal oppressors actually oppress. Flawed logic.

Sorry, couldn't read the entire article. But, in answer to your question, I believe that the foundation of the US was comprised of people who escaped their homeland in order to seek religous freedom. Although they themselves were religious, I think what underpins our society is the desire to worship as we want (or not to worship at all). Therefore, I think this is why the USA has attracted people from all nations and religions: they are seeking religious freedom as well as economic opportunity.

That said, although our founding fathers were religious, the framers of the constitution DID clearly want a separation of church and state. At that time, literally EVERYONE believed in God (I won't go into details why). So, while God/Christianity were a given, I think our founding fathers wanted to make it very clear that people had the freedom to worship as they please, and that the state should not interfere/govern that worship.

Victory for Terrorism

the terrorists won a great victory in spain.

mind you, i'm all for the democratic process...it's great...and had the spanish decided to part ways with the us of it's own volition, great!...however, the socialists were project to not win a majority in this weekends election...that is until the terrorist attack.

now, with the socialist coming into power...and the promise to both withdraw the 1300 spanish soldiers from iraq and to part ways with the us on foriegn policy we can look for more such attacks in other countries.

Ah, what a spin on terrorist activities. The 9-11 terrorists were not evil...just misunderstood. Sadaam wasn't evil...just reacting to years rejection by the US.

So, it's the US fault. I suppose it is also the US's fault that in pre-war Afghanistan, women were brutally oppressed, could not leave the house, could not be educated, were raped and beaten if they tried to do any of these things? I suppose it's the US's fault that Saddam brutally murdered dissenters, that his sons routinely rounded up virgins to rape them, that people lived in fear. Right. All because they were "misunderstood" and by the US.

I suppose the guy who just murdered 9 women and children in Fresno was simply misunderstood. Who knows what frustration made him finally blow a fuse.

I cannot believe your line of reasoning. Terrorist invariable enslave and terrorize their OWN people. Their mind set is all or nothing. While it certainly doesn't hurt to try to understand their culture and frustrations, to paint them as people just lashing out because they've been oppressed is simply supporting terrorism.

Let's figure out why Islamofacist extremists will willingly destroy, maim, and terrorize innocent citizens, and will go so far as to commit "righteous" suicide in so doing. They believe they will be rewarded by Allah in some afterlife. They hate the American way of life and everything it stands for. They cannot conceive of the idea that a country can maintain a pluralistic society, where Muslims, Jews, Christians, and atheists can live. They cannot grasp the concept of pluralism; they only know "bad" and "good." We and are way of life are "bad"; they and their beliefs are "good."

What precisely do you think the US can do to gently "assist" terrorists to quit terrorizing.

notice that in the story on kerry, the headline is, "kerry calls for deeper tax cuts for the middle class" in the article i've highlighted the real news of that story.

which is that he said the gop was the most crooked lying group he's ever seen.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel? Bad, bad, dangerous, scary...wow, you've got personal issues with Bush, it's clear. You are a good follower of the Dem's political cry, which has characterized Dean, Kerry, and other frontrunners: the platform of hate and anger. Speak in generalities, don't give too many factual details. Foment anger, which is easy to do with a lot of people.

That message comes through loud and clear. Incidentally, what you accuse Bush of--some form of inarticulateness--is hard to take seriously, given your piercing observation: "If Gore was Prez, the world would be different. I think less bad."

That's about sums up the anti-bush empty rhetoric that characterizes this political campaign.

On the contrary, evidence of Sadaam/Al Q ties are increasingly emerging. Clearly, the sophisticated network of terrorism cannot be defined in black/white terms as you are attempting to do. Further, it was Sadaam's cat/mouse game of not allowing weapons inspections that caused concern for not only the US, but the world. The corruption/kickbacks Euro countries were getting from the UN sponsored food-for-oil program through Sadaam was appalling (and explains a bit about why France & Russia weren't too keen to stop Sadaam). More and more evidence is emerging of terrorist networks.

And think about it: Al Queda apparently WAS responsible for bombing innocent people due to Osama's outrage of Spains support of Iraqi occupation. He's angry at the US for our toppling Sadaam, and he's angry at any county who supports them. HE obviously saw US action as a war against him and his kind. He saw it as a move on terror.

Clearly, what has been going on HAS and will continue to be a fight on terror. Spain's method of dealing has encouraged terrorists that their tactics of intimidation work.
