  He is more than a hero. He is a martyr and a victim of evil. He did not even see it coming. It was a total shock to him.

  yeah, I guess we knew the ending to the story already. Do you think he just felt he was being held hostage??? I guess it makes sense. Probably best he didn' t know.

  But geeze. I'm stuggling with this delayed reaction on my part. Thought I was stronger than that.

  I guess this is what these sleeze's intended, to instill fear in us all. I hope it has the OPPOSITE response, as I feel. These bastards won't be able to take the lives of my children.

  I know I was warned. I had to see for myself the Berg video. Saw it at work this am. Was depressed, but thought I'd get over it. 20 hours later, all of a sudden, I'm crying my eyes out and can't control it.

  Thought I could take it. Ultimately, I will. What struck me is this man's utter dignity and composure before what happened. I thought, how would I feel and behave? Nick Berg is a hero.

  May he rest in peace and may all of us aspire to be so courageous.

  I'm here trying to separate my day to day reality being who I am and what Borg promised us as far as living in harmony with others.

  Gespro, I missed this on the first read. One of the only positive things I have to say about the born is that I really was raised not to see color: I had and have so many close, close African American friends in the borg, and after. Only later, did I learn that the "color blindness" was only because the people were JWs. If they weren't, then the same old prejudices often apply. When I was old enough to understand my mother's REAL views about African Americans and Jews who weren't JWs, did I really understand what prejudices she was hiding. Since the prejudice wasn't instilled in me early on,

  I'm sorry if I was insensitive to your experiences. Guess to be free, we have to take the bad with the good. I've had to fight battles over sexism--which of course, as a woman being in wifely subjection under the loving guidance of my husband and the elders, was in my proper role. Wait on Jehovah to make you truly happy--the world has corrupted the true role of women..

  The real world is MUCH better, in spite of the battle.

  I didn't know that about Sweden--interesting.

  I think in the US there are indeed pockets of racism; I just don't thing it's true everywhere. We've got a long ways to go.

  i know that the issue of the man being beheaded by the iraqis has been discussed already but they just played the sound of the beheading on talk radio (shawn hannity).

  this is absolutely horrible.....the sound of him screaming just makes me ill.

  i know of certain fast-food restaurants that only serve halal meat.

  if what i've been told is correct, halal meat is meat that has been blessed by a muslim priest (please correct me if i'm wrong).

  But, interestingly the King James version says food "polluted" by idols. That has a very different slant, IMO.

  You know, you bring up a very good point. To me, it's just further proof that the admonision Peter made to the Christians back them really has NO bearing in life today--it was relevant back then. Why don't the JW's try to take this issue so damned literally like they do their precious blood doctrine. I mean, how do we KNOW we're not eating blood "sacraficed" to idols. I always thought their lack of concern for eating kosher food was inconsistent with their obsession with blood.

  I think they should give examples of how that very important (just as important and the abstain from blood admonision) prohibition of "not eating foods sacrificed to idols" is observed by "true Christians" today.

  here i would disagree. US citizens are very nationalistic/patriotic (at least compared to what i was used to before i came to the US). but than again i have only lived in sweden and austria before i moved to NY.

  As I said, I'm from CA, where things are pretty liberal and we have major diverse populations, so much so that white Americans will soon be in the minority (if we're not already). I've never lived in New York, so maybe you picked up on something I haven't (but that seems to be a major melting pot, too.)

  IMO, I don't really see Sweeden to be representative of a racially/ethnically tolerant nation, since their population is so homogenous--in other words, the issue would rarely come up. I don't believe too many blacks or other racial/ethnic groups live in Australia, but I'm not the expert. Never met an Aussie I didn't love, though.

  ethnic intolerance exists in both societies. what are the mexicans (or other latin americans) for you are the south east europeans for us. most low level jobs in the US are done by black or hispanic people...in europe its jugoslavians or people from turkey.

  True, but the reason for this is largely due to education/training, not because of inherent racism. This has been acknowledged to be an issue, hence Afirmative Action programs have been designed to help address the disparity in education/training. No, we are not there yet by any means, by the gap is starting to narrow.

  Esp with the illegal immigration controversy, there's been considerable discussion as to Mexicans willing to work at much lower wages than American citizens will. The same holds true often even among Mexican-Americans who are legal citizens.

  While it doesn't mean that racism isn't a problem, you have to dig a little deeper when you see econmic stats.
