i got into a rather heated discussion this morning with my unbaptised but raised jehovah's witness wife.
we discussed so many things: feb 1 watchtower article on 607 and 1914, the un, beth sarim, blood, god's mouthpiece here on earth, etc.
this was yet another attempt on my part to try to plant a seed of doubt.

Blondie's advice is some of the best I've ever seen here. The key in my relationship with my JW wife seems to be the fact that we respect each others view's.
I try to live my life in a way that should show my love for God, but I don't feel compelled to join a group just because they say they are God's people. My wife was raised in the JW faith and was babtised about 6 years after we married. I respect her beliefs, and she respects mine.

i find that the witnesses are very "haughty".
haughty is described in the oxford dictionary as "proud of oneself and looking down on others"; how well this describes the wtbts.. how many people were very proud of having "the troof"?
how many people felt that they were special.
I think we can all be accused of being haughty at times. The best biblical example that comes to my mind is in Mark 10: 35-45. James and John came to Jesus and said they wanted Jesus to do whatever they asked him to do. Jesus' answer was very simply, "what shall I do for you."
This is known by some as the Zebideeian plea (Zebibee was the father of John and James). The other disciples became angry when they heard what James and John had requested, but Jesus explained how in God's kingdom the greatest will be the servant.
Jesus' reply to James and John, "what shall I do for you?", provides the example Christians should try to follow.
By the way, Jesus could not do what James and John requested of him. My point is that James and John may have provided us the best example of haughtieness in history!!!

it seems to me that a better thought would be, "our faith will be evident from the way we live our life and the way we treat our fellow man.".

No, according to the WTBTS, the way we show our faith is by spending more time in field service. Following their logic, the more field service time you report, the more faith you have. I'll bet you can't find that in the Bible.
the december issue of "kingdom ministry" for australia carries this announcement:.
"as a reminder to the brothers handling the congregation accounts, donations placed in the boxes for the worldwide work are to be remitted monthly and should not be used for payment on a kingdom hall property loan or for any other congregation expense.".

I can think of one more reason. The society does not trust the local congregations with splitting the money fairly.
I think it goes to show what the society really thinks of the local elders and servants. They can't be trusted to use donated money wisely. Just my opionion.

I'm hearing that with all the development going on down there that all that might be changing in the near future. Developers buying land that had been owned by forestry companies for years. Development between Highway 98 and I-10. You guys may be really in for some huge growth over the next few years.

Geez JC, don't you realize that most scholars date the fall of Jerusalem at 586 or 587 BC anyway??
I think your best advice came from people who had been in your situation. If your husband wants a divorce, make him pay. He is responsible for his children. He can't just walk away. He can't keep you away. Its his problem and he may not realize how willing the courts are to make him be responsible.
If there is one thing we don't have a shortage of in the USA its lawyers. Find a good one!!!
i was raised in the organization.
my stepfather was a ministerial servant but was removed when i was 14, due to family problems, which he blamed on me (he was abusive, physically, and was told that if he cannot control his family, he could not be an example to the congregation).
i became pregnant at 15 and have not really lived around my family since then.

This is just a suggestion:
Ask her to study one night from just the bible, no WT literature. Tell her you have thought about a lot of the things you have been learning and done bible reading on your own. Ask her to read the bible book of Galatians with you. Try to have a version of the bible handy, like a Living Bible, for your study, don't let her bully you into reading her version only. By the way, the WT version says the same thing, its just harder to understand Paul's true meaning of Christian freedom with the WT version.
The book is only 6 chapters long, not to much to handle in one evening. After reading this with her tell her you don't understand the difference between Paul's view on circumcision and the WT view of celebrating holidays, the ban on blood transfusions, being disfellowshipped for smoking, etc.
This is not a trick to stumble your friend, its a bible based view of how true Christians are not to be tied to laws of man.
Now I'll warn you, this is not an end all for your discussion with this witness. I've studied these exact scriptures with my wife and she still thinks of the WT as Gods organization. This is only a starting point for you and perhaps your friend, into Christian freedom.

a letter read to us last thursday advised us to stay at recommended hotels only.
we were told by the governing body that those who do not stay at recommend places are on a path to rebellion.
Just goes to show what the WTBTS thinks about their followers. I don't understand how these poor souls can decide where to stay on vacation, or God forbid, they have to travel for work. How could a JW ever know what hotel to stay in without guidance from the society?
"Good Lord man, your staying at a Holiday Inn? Whats wrong with you, don't you know that we don't celebrate Holidays?" And don't you know Days Inn is named after the Day family that origianally owned the properties? This is just a form of worship, to name a hotel chain after the owners. Don't even try to stay at any Marriott or Sheridan locations. The "Dew Drop Inn" is OK but make sure you don't steal the towels or stay past check-out time."
