“You know how I know that they're finished out there? The carts.”
by Athanasius inthe watchtower's many legal problems and the jws' use of carts in their preaching work, reminded me of a scene and dialog from the film patton.. in a scene where patton is viewing a battle site the morning after, he says to an aide about the nazis: “you know how i know that they're finished out there?
in my dreams i saw the carts.
they kept buzzing around in my head and i couldn't figure out why.

stan, not for sure regarding price of one cart, I think it has been posted on JWN before.
I can't believe that some WTS publications are paid for by jws or the congregation. That would definitely be "new light."

Spinochordodes tellinii and Fundamentalism

one heck of an analogy for fundamentalism.

peacefulpete, amazing comparison of real life and what the WTS has said about the locusts in Revelation (and Joel 2).
(BTW I have not looked at the "new" WTS view on who the locusts are)

2:1-10, 28—How has the prophecy about the invasion by insects been fulfilled? There is no record in the Bible of an insect invasion of the land of Canaan of the magnitude described in the book of Joel. Therefore, the assault Joel describes is apparently pictorial of the time in 33 C.E. when Jehovah started to pour out his spirit upon early followers of Christ and they began preaching the message that tormented false religious leaders. (Acts 2:1, 14-21; 5:27-33) It is our privilege to share in a similar work today.

Thick smoke poured out, and from this came a plague of locusts. Rather than ravage vegetation, the symbolic locusts swarm against “those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.” (Rev. 9:1-4) John no doubt knew how devastating a locust swarm could be. Had not locusts plagued ancient Egypt in Moses’ day? (Ex. 10:12-15) The figurative locusts that John saw well illustrate anointed Christians proclaiming Jehovah’s powerful judgment messages. They are joined now by millions of companions with an earthly hope.

stan, I don't believe jws have "paid" directly for any WTS literature since 1990. I don't think the literature in the carts would be any different. But I understand that the congregations do pay for the carts.

The smug arrogance of "having the truth".
by stuckinarut2 inhas anyone noticed that witnesses (from the top down) seem to have a quiet form of smug arrogance toward all non witnesses?.
perhaps it comes from being told how "special and unique" they are but they end up looking down on all normal members of the community because they are not witnesses.. so any form of "love" they show those in the territory is also limited as long as they accept the message...otherwise they are viewed contemptuously as "worldly" and therefore of little value...after all, they will be destroyed right?.

My family was somewhat different, but the result was the same, although knowing there were serious flaws, my family would pick and choose what they privately felt, thinking that God somehow would fix it. The second generation, especially, since it seemed more likely they would live through the Big A. But this family thinking, made me always look at WTS doctrines and policies with some skepticism.
So I heard a lot of private debate about certain doctrines, my family actually looking at the scriptures and seeing the flaws. Three times at least it seemed they were "vindicated" when the WTS changed their position who the "superior authorities" were and that the GT had not started in 1914 and took a hiatus in 1918 to start up again in the near future; rather that it was still in the near future (very soon now as the WTS likes to say). The WTS came out in 1969.
And finally, from 1966 on when the concept that 1975 would be the end of 6,000 years of human history and that only left 1,000 years for the Millennial rule of the Messianic Kingdom over the earth, that humankind was fast approaching the beginning of the GT and its culmination in 1975. My family though had several points that countered that: 1) Jesus knew when Adam and Eve had been created, after all the WTS says that he helped God in that creation (and the angel that became Satan was also there); so Jesus would have known when the end was coming while he was on earth despite his statement that he did not know. 2) Matthew 24:44, Jesus said that whenever you thought the end would come, it would not come. So since the WTS was focusing on 1975, then the end was not coming in 1975. And my family was vindication when the WTS dialed it back in 1975 for those same reasons.
GT did not start in 1914 (as well as several other flip-flop explanations)
https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/1999323#h=14:0-15:594
However, in later years we have come to see things differently. On Thursday, July 10, 1969, at the “Peace on Earth” International Assembly in New York City, F. W. Franz, then vice president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society, gave an electrifying talk. In reviewing the previous understanding of Jesus’ prophecy, Brother Franz said: “The explanation was given that the ‘great tribulation’ had begun in 1914 C.E. and that it was not allowed to run its full course then but God stopped World War I in November of 1918. From then on God was allowing an interval for the activity of his anointed remnant of elect Christians before he let the final part of the ‘great tribulation’ resume at the battle of Armageddon.”
12 Then a significantly adjusted explanation was offered: “To correspond with the events of the first century, . . . the antitypical ‘great tribulation’ did not begin in 1914 C.E. Rather, what took place upon Jerusalem’s modern antitype in 1914-1918 was merely ‘a beginning of pangs of distress’ . . . The ‘great tribulation’ such as will not occur again is yet ahead, for it means the destruction of the world empire of false religion (including Christendom) followed by the ‘war of the great day of God the Almighty’ at Armageddon.” This meant that the entire great tribulation was yet ahead.
SUPERIOR AUTHORITIES (1961/1962)
https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/pc/r1/lp-e/1200027525/8/9
Superior authorities no longer God and Jesus but the secular governments, but relative. Somehow that one little word made it a new concept. So while the WTS was very wrong about the SA being God and Jesus, they felt that misunderstanding protected its members from giving anything to the secular governments, which can show what the status between the WTS and Hitler was combative, especially after the suck-up letters of 1933 and 1934 did not work.

The locusts of Joel Chapter 2 no longer refer to Jehovah's Witnesses and events surrounding 1919
I have wondered when and if the WTS will distance themselves from the 1919 date. It will be interesting to see if they continue on that path.

Yes, Anna Marina. Any quotes from Strong's in WTS publications are okay, because they have been pre-approved by the WTS writing staff. But general private reading of Strong's is discouraged and the WTS Concordance is best.)
As to Greek and Hebrew words, in the past the WTS did use the original words in their publications when discussing their meaning for jws today, such as agape, psyche, etc. Except for the NWT Study Notes, now in 90% the WTS publications, the WTS says "Greek word" and then the definition but not the word itself.
I think in today's jw world, most jws have no idea about the four Greek words for love (English having only one word).
-----This is the most recent reference I found in 2017, then nothing until 2009 (note the 4th is eros, not found in the Bible)
https://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/2016603?q=agape+philia+storge&p=par
The Bible emphasizes the importance of love. Tender affection (Greek, phi·liʹa) is needed in a marriage. Romantic love (eʹros) brings delight, and love for family (stor·geʹ) is vital when children enter the picture. However, it is love based on principle (a·gaʹpe) that ensures the success of a marriage.
(Plus, I have not found the reference, but not too long ago, jws were discouraged from doing research outside the WT study articles to share at the WT study, even in other WT publications, that all the research that was needed in the article had been provided by the WTS/GB.) If someone else on JWN has that reference, can you share it here?)
