Yes wasn’t this a story in Crisis of Conscience, that this change nearly went through a decade or so earlier, but they were just short of 2/3 majority, Lloyd Barry was away on a zone visit/holiday or something crazy like that, and thousands of JWs continued to go to prison needlessly.

Alternate military service pre and post 1996 witness policies. Please comments.
by benny inwhat are the thoughts on the changes made by the society in the 1996 watchtower [new light] where one can then accept alternate army service where before you would have to be sentenced to do this.
i feel many were sent to prison needlessly or even executed.
this was not a matter of conscience as the watchtower claims..

Two years on, I’m not sure we are much wiser what is going on with Watchtower finances.
Cutbacks continue and legal payouts loom larger than they did a couple of years ago, yet the organisational panic surrounding finances seems to have dissipated.

Interesting observations at an SDA church
by joe134cd ini’ve just attended a sda church service today.
i have to say the attendance was similar to what i would expect to see in a jw service.
the style and nature of the service was also very jwish (formal, drab and boring).

More than 40 books and 5000 articles:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ellen_G._White_writings
There is probably no one alive can claim to have read all the writings attributed to Ellen White.

I think Ellen White produced so many books, like whole libraries full of material, they are still reading through it to see what it contains. No doubt a lot of it was borrowed material. Charles Russell borrowed some material for Studies in the Scriptures too, much of it attributed, but perhaps not all. One day it should be possible to run early Watchtower literature through a plagiarism database and establish just how much was borrowed and from where.

They are a bit old-fashioned, evangelical and proof-text focussed, with a dash of Waco style anti-cult hysteria mixed in. Many who leave JWs these days tend to miss out the evangelical phase of their transition. And anti JW books these days tend to focus of social issues of abuse, shunning and blood, rather than doctrines and chronology and so on.

Shift in beliefs?
by blankspace ini was wondering whether anyone observed this point in the previous week's wt study, in paragraph 17: "jehovah’s spirit moves “the faithful steward” to keep giving his servants their food supply.".
i see this as a subtle move away from earlier claims to be channel for spiritual food.
the gb earlier said that they weren't inspired or infallible.

When Will Jehovah`s Witnesses Appoint A Woman As A Governing Body Member.? It`s Long Overdue !
by smiddy3 injehovah himself gives the saying "the women telling the good news are a large army" psalms 68 : 11 coupled with the fact that a good portion of women partake of the emblems and wine at the annual memorial celebration.. identifying themselves as part of the 144000 that are taken from the earth to rule with christ jesus in the heavens.. isn`t it about time they were recognized for their contributions and given the fact that gods word the bible clearly states that 144,000 of anointed are to be taken from the earth which many women are a large part of.?.
revelation ch.14 :4 could be argued that they are not lesbians { "these are the ones who do not defile themselves with women ,in fact they are virgins, etc,etc.}.
i wonder just how many men who claim to be of the anointed have not defiled themselves with women and are virgins.?.

Apparently just as soon as the government imposes fines for organisations that don’t include women in leadership, the GB will fold and comply immediately to avoid financial loss.

Rutherford's wife, why the info blackout?
by VM44 inrutherford ruled the watchtower organization from 1916 to 1942, traveled extensively, had several residences, most notably, beth sarim.
but absent always was his wife, mary, not to mention his son, malcolm as well.. ok, rutherford was so well known, why did no one inquire about his son and wife?.
when rutherford resided at beth sarim in san diego, why was his wife not there with him?

The story I’ve read is that Malcolm had no children and that curious JWs and exJWs visited him over the years and asked him about his father and he always turned them away with no information. He was alienated from his father and he didn’t want to discuss it. When he died a lot of Rutherford related irreplaceable possessions, personal Bibles and documents and so on were thrown away.

That seems a likely explanation to me, Listener!
It’s a bit late to find out now for sure, because everyone must be dead.

The Lords prayer ;Our Father prayer...."Let your name be sanctified " from Jesus.
by smiddy3 inaccording to mathew 6:9 jesus instructed his followers in, vs. 9 " you must pray, then this way "our father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified ..... which rank & file jehovah`s witnesses have been led to believe for the past 140 or so years is to make a personal name of god namely jehovah known to all of the world ,because as they have so loudly professed christendom has kept that name away from the general public.. not true ,raymundus martinus a spanish catholic monk of the 13th-14th century first coined that name for god and it has been used in and on churches throughout christendom in the world ever since.. true christendoms emphasis has been on witnessing about jesus christ which is what the new testament is all about, not jehovah god, but jesus christ .
phillipians 2 :9-11. in the new testament ,( cgs ) jesus christ is never recorded as saying the personal name of god ever.. " " none of the apostles are ever recorded as saying the personal name of god ever.. " " none of his disciples are ever recorded as saying the personal name of god ever.. the new testament ,christian greek scriptures are all about bearing witness about jesus christ and after his time of bringing back people under his kingdom will he turn then it back over to his father, a thousand years when his rule is finished.. that is the message of the"kingdom interlinear of the christian greek scriptures" published by the wtb&ts ,says..

The Watchtower has never disputed that the Greek text of Wescott and Hort doesn’t include the divine name. (Except the shortened form Jah, in Revelation) In fact they have stated this fact a number of times when discussing the topic.
Their argument is that the original NT used the divine name, and on that basis they restore it. How much clearer could they be? On this issue a number of NT scholars agree with them, that the divine name occurred in the original NT.
My point about Yaho is that there is evidence that this is how first century Jews called their God, and therefore it would not have been unusual for Jesus to have done so.
It’s like asking if President Lincoln or President Nixon used the word television, or TV. Even without direct evidence it seems reasonably likely that Nixon used this common word and that Lincoln couldn’t have used it, for obvious reasons.
Since Yaho was a common designation for the Jewish God in the first century it is on the face of it reasonable to suppose that Jesus and his contemporaries used the name. The later NT manuscripts that don’t include the divine name date from a period when the divine name had been removed from the LXX also, so are not good evidence for use in the NT period itself.
