I never ran to the elders because all the kids viewed me as a "goodie goodie" and thought I would tell, but I confessed my big sins of kissing boys when I was 18 !!! the horror.... it makes me sick now, thinking of those old farts sitting there making me cry when all I did was kiss a couple of boys.

Were You One of Those That Ran To The Elders About Everything???
by minimus indid you always call the elders or talk to them about things?
did you have a favorite elder that you confided to about everything?
if someone was acting inappropriately, did you feel obliged to "report" them to the elders?

Need Help any Advice?
by whyamihere inhi, i am somewhat new here although my feelings about the jw's haven't been.. anyway, i am doing the fade thing right now along with my husband.
everything was going fine i have not gone to a meeting in 5 months now(i think) and prior to that i was barely going i guess you could say every now and then.
however, going every now and, then i was going back and forth with my feelings.

The thing is you are their parent, you have the right to make choices on their behalf. If they are allowed to go alone, what will they be told? That you as their mother is going to get "destroyed at armeggedon?" or how sinful they are?
I am sick of the guilt and shame and fear that the JWs teach and preach. It's time kids grew up acting and feeling like kids instead of shamed and guilty people.
I applaud you and your efforts and you don't really need to defend your beliefs or choices because they don't have the authority to question your parenting. Pretty much, NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!

Getting fed up with fading
by Pole inok, so here is my story in put a nutshell: .
1. i first had "nagging doubts" about the borg some three years ago (after 6 years of being a faithful witness).
2. i stopped avoiding "apostate" internet sites some 1.5 years ago, which really helped me confirm my doubts.

I think it's funny the way witnesses look at you, once you have been DF'd or whatever. I faded out for 5 long years and when I ran into anyone they would actually make small talk and invite me to "special talks" or whatever... but then I was fainlly DF'd and if I ever run into a witness (rarely) it's like they've seen a ghost, it's almost like you scare them. Aughhh.... Yikes, run away.... they have to quickly divert their eyes and walk away.

Free Literature at the Kingdom Hall
by frankiespeakin ini was thinking for all you guys who go the kingdom hall even though you know it's not the truth,, in order to keep from loosing all your friends and family,, why not take advantage of the wt free literature at your kh?
i mean the wt is forcing you to go to meetings with the threat of being outcasted from your family why not put a little dent in their finances but getting all the free literature you can and not contibuting anything for it.
after all the wt is offering it free of charge.

I was raised extremely poor and my mom cleaned houses and hung wallpaper, we collected food stamps, etc... but I remember her getting paid for a big wallpapering job, something like $1,000 (which was a TON of money to us) and her putting $500 of it into the contribution box to make up for her not being able to donate throughout the year.... she'd always do stuff like that.
Of course I never got a new pair of jeans or anything, always goodwill and handmedowns. But she always donated what she could to the society. That is what I think is horrid, taking poor people's money when they have nothing.

But that wouldn't be possible because the whole philosophy is to be "no part of the world" of this world, but no part of it. Humph, doesn't make sense.

GOT A LITTLE STORY TO TELL YA.
by outoftheorg inmy wife and i live in a rather small town.
around 5500 residents and about another 2 to 3 thousand on the outskirts.. we have a very good hospital here, considering the size of the county and residents.. my wife is a nurse and now is the office mgr.
of the home health dept.. it seems that there is no end to the several things the hospital is involved in that call for volunteers.

I truly see "worldly" people are NORMAL people... finally !!! Yeah!!! It's wonderful. I have found so many wonderful people, loving people once I broke free. Your story is very sweet.
About the girl scout cookies, I remember the ban against them... augh... forgot about that too. But I buy them now because they are too good not to.

See we come from a HUGE family in Canada. My mother is one of 10 kids, 9 of whom are JW. So we have 8 sets of aunts and uncles and all their kids who mostly are JW. We attended a funeral about a year ago and they were horrible to us, wouldn't even let us in our grandmothers home.
I think my sister brought it up because the "label" would be removed and maybe in times of funerals or family stuff that it might be ok to be there. No to all hang out and socialize, but in dealing with family situations.
I live 3,300 miles away from them all, so I could care less. They live in a very small community in BC and have the small town mentality, they all do carpentry, or cabinet work, or logging, or work in the mill, etc... they never left home, never left town, they don't grow.
But it's probably true, the end result would be exactly the same. Thanks for all the wise comments.

To me it's like WINNING THE LOTTERY.... There are the perpetual hopefulls that just KNOW that they will WIN big time someday... so they continue to buy their ticket.
Not that there is anything wrong with the lottery... it's just that you can't base your whole life on the idea that you will win. Get a job too, just in case that lotto thing doesn't work out.
I think the future of the soceity is in the young people. I think it will die off or at least change drastically when the older generation dies off. It's so illogical and irrational, the youth are leaving the Amish, the Mormon, and the JW faiths. I feel sorry for the folks like my mother who have spent years of their life waiting... and have nothing to show for it, they didn't need to plan for a future because the end was too close, I feel a lot of sympathy towards them.
I have to admit that I live in a regular neighborhood in a regular town, and haven't seen JW's in the 4 years I have lived here.

Your body is a temple.
by kwintestal inso don't do anything to it.. leaving a high-control group such as the wts can leave you with an internal desire to rebel against the teachings you once held to.. did you do anything previously forbidden soon after you left the borg?
tattoos?
peircings?

I drink socially, but I always did that.
I never felt the need to rebel against anything, I realized right away that it was finally time to live and I don't like tatoos or anything, so I just lived. I never liked drugs and work in a profession that I can't use drugs even if I wanted to, so I have never touched the stuff, no smoking either.
Pretty much just a healthy appetite and the occasional drink.

Should I teach my kids about Santa Claus? (Lie vs. Harmless Fantasy)
by AlmostAtheist inmy wife and i got on a discussion about something i never would've guessed we'd need to.
she wants to teach our new baby about santa claus, easter bunny, & tooth fairy, but i don't.
of course, as witnesses we never would have taught that, and i have to acknowledge that i may only be reasoning using that old set of values.. i don't want to look into my kid's eyes and tell her something that i know for a fact isn't true.

About harmful teachings... My friend Venessa met a JW and they had playtimes together with their kids at the playground... Anyways, the Jw's 5 year old looked at my friends baby and said "Your baby is sooo pretty, but she's going to die at Armeggedon if you don't listen to Jehovah"
Venessa was pretty much SHOCKED that a 5 years old would tell her that her baby was going to die. How HORRID, now that is sick. Lying to a child about other children dying.
