I really can't believe the difference between congregations and how they handle things. Yes, there are many key "rules" they all follow, but reading some of the accounts on here, and those of my brother, who was DF'd over a year ago from another congregation in a different town, it blows my mind how the congregation I attended seems so much more "human". When my father died (he was a baptised JW) we had his service at the KH he had gone to since I was a child. The speaker (a close friend of my father's and a kind of surrogate father to me growing up) did the usual paradise speech and bible scriptures but he also talked much about my father as person and had everyone laughing at some examples of my father's quick wit and his loving nature. In that respect, those of us who were no longer or never had been witnesses, did not get the feeling it was only a JW meeting or a means to convert people. Even though I had been DF'd 20 yrs at the time he died, all the JWs I knew came up and gave me a hug and said a few words of comfort. They didn't talk my ear off and I didn't expect them to, but they weren't cold to me either. My father never shunned me after I was DF'd and those in the congregation never pressured him to nor treated him coldly because he didn't shun me.
On the other hand, the congregation my brother attends have been inhumane in their treatment of my brother. But that's a subject for another thread.
I guess I was fortunate. I actually liked most of the people in the congregation I attended and still do, except for the few I wouldn't have liked anyway, despite the circumstances, because they were just anal retentive to start with.
Sorry you had such an awful experience. It's hard enough to lose a loved one without all that extra crap.

No thank you, there are some designers on there I wouldn't let design my doghouse or outhouse.
Hee hee. I know you said to disregard after seeing you mistook it for Trading Spaces, but I must admit I did the same thing. My first thought was "whoa! what are they going to do? Paint murals on the walls of Armageddon? How creepy would that be?".

I went to Scottish Festival a couple years ago where they had skydivers wearing kilts. I think it was against the rules to not look up their kilts when they were getting ready to land.

So is the aging, balding, lecherous guy on the other end a JW? Goodness knows, they're a safehouse for that ilk.

If I were to visit your town for the first time..
by doodle-v inwhat food places would you reccomend?
if im in a new town, i like going to eat at places that locals go to that most like likely are not in all the tourists guides, if possible.
if you were to come to my town, i'd probably take you to eat at dick's drive in (best burgers imo) and if you were in the mood for something fancy, maybe el gauchos (best steakhouse imo) and terrific atmosphere... how bout you?

Maldanodos (Mexican cuisine). Unfortunately, it's the only decent place to eat in my little tourist town. I'd probaby just take you 20 miles to the closest town that has decent food.

Guilty Fast Food Pleasures
by Swan inokay, what is the one fast food that you just love, but are a little ashamed to admit to?.
a detective character (sue grafton's kinsey milhone) in some mysteries i read has these guilty fast food pleasures.
just about every day she runs for miles on the beach, but then she is invariably ends up ducking into the mcdonald's drive thru with her little vw and scarfing a big mac or quarter pounder.

I can honestly say fast food in general just does not appeal to me anymore. I used to love it (Whopper!! and fries) but now it just makes me feel icky.

I had some weird experiences in a place I lived once. My "then" husband and I would leave and come home and the door would be ajar when we pulled back in the drive. It happened several times so we got where we would make absolute sure the door was locked when we left. Then when we would come home the windows would be open. One night we came home and the door was again open (and we knew it had been locked). When it was time for bed we turned off all the lights in the house except for in the bathroom, as a nightlight for the kids. Shortly after we were in bed the bathroom light starting blinking off and on. While the light was blinking the telephone rang. I picked it up and said the normal "hello" and the darned thing kept ringing while the light kept blinking on and off. It was really freaky. In that same house, one night when I was in bed, I almost got paralyzed from fear. I just felt there was something evil in the room with me. I just put it down to all the fears I had of demons from my upbringing in the JWs. Still don't know what it was...human...ghost...evil....faulty wiring. We didn't stay in that house and moved not long after this stuff was happening. Never had anything like that ever happen again.
