Good grief folks,
The Bible indicates that Mark and Luke knew each other and even worked together with Paul at times. Since Mark was apparently in the second tier of disciples around Jesus he probably knew Matthew and was probably familiar with Matthew's account. So the similarity is easily explained without having to invent "Q" as a mysterious source. So I vote for the historicity of the Gospels.
Since the existance of Jesus is attested to in a few early sources outside the Bible, then I think the debate of whether he existed or not moot.

Are the gospels genuine?
by ackack ini've been reading the jesus puzzle and something interesting was this re-ordering of q. its seems like the various pieces of q in luke and matthew have different contexts.
this would support that the contexts for the q sayings were invented.. it seems that paul doesn't reference the gospels in any form.. does this support a late writing for the gospels and therefore calls into question how close the gospels were written to the alleged events of jesus' life?.
how would someone who believes in the gospels reconcile these differences?

Hot sisters (or brothers) in your cong...
by blakky ini was just wandering.... was it just me or was everyone thinking about it..... ive been in a few congs where some of the sisters were absolutely drop dead gorgeous!
my last cong here in sydney, there was about 160 publishers so the talent was every where... i remember having the hots for this sister, who happens to be the wife of the service overseer... she was xxx hot.
i remember always having to wear my suit coat to the meeting to hide my excitement.. i think all the bro's must have thought the same thing.

This got me to remembering a drop-dead gorgeous red-head in my first congo who was about the same age as I. I remember her hair was straight and long. Just like me, she was sort of toward the bottom rung socially. I was on the bottom rung, however, and she had nothing to do with me. Her family moved away. And she married one handsome dude who made mucho dinero in his job. She came by every now and then to flaunt to the rest how well off she was. I used to laugh at how it eat at the folks who had been so snooty to her when she was in our congregation.
Thanks for the pleasant memory!

My first time being shunned in public
by xjwms inso thats what it feels like.. i am not df'ed or da'ed, ... i have just stopped going to meetings.
my wife is trying to be as active as she can.. so all morning i am out of my regular routine.
late getting out of bed and late about everything today.. so i leave the house, and before getting to the office, i decide to stop at the mall for a quick, maybe 15 min, walk.. as soon as i get inside, taking my coat off, here is the elder who did everything he could in his power to get me out...and lied...and added to gossip that ran me outta there.. he and his wife spot me .. and turn there heads away and continue on their walk, .. eyes fixed on some thing away from me.. so thats what it feels like.........now i know.

My wife and I were treated to some shunning about 20 years ago. The sad thing was that we'd done nothing wrong and had reported the crime which resulted in our shunning like good little Dubs (our daughter's rape). I can remember encountering other Dubs in stores who would turn around and go the other way when they saw us! It really hurt then.
Now, a few months ago a whole bunch of Dubs from my last congregation showed up at the same function at the local college that my wife and I went to. They acted like I didn't exist and avoided me (the PO of that congregation was in the group). I didn't bother me because I didn't particularly care to talk to them either. So I reckon I can say that the feeling was mutual. I guess I just want to be left alone, and if their shunning me achieves that (I haven't heard anything about an announcement on me yet), then its alright with me. The loss is more theirs than mine!

Are Liberal Arts Degree worth it?
by truthseeker inan excellent article, which also refutes the idea that people only go to college to get rich and make money.. http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/departments/elearning/?article=liberalartsare liberal arts degrees worth anything?by jim pollock.
for everyone who says that a liberal arts degree doesn't prepare you for anything, you'll find someone else who claims that it prepares you for everything.
well, both, to some extent.the one thing that's pretty much certain is that right out of the gate, a liberal arts grad will tend to pull a smaller starting salary than his or her friends who majored in business or a technical field.

Liberal Arts degees have their uses. As pointed out, Business majors can do well. Most Law schools want liberal Arts majors. And lawyers do make good money unless they go to work as public defenders.
My associates was a Liberal Arts degree and my Bachelor's a Science degree. I am proud of them both whether I make a ton of money or not.

No. Didn't happen to me, the elders in my congo knew better! I don't know if my bride to be was asked the question. It didn't stop folks from her old congregation (I'd insisted she switch congregations because I found out the PO was trying to put together a JC to DF her on trumped-up charges) from spreading gossip that we were doing it like bunnies. She was worth the wait!

Shoot! Before my dub days I learned how to pick pockets just to develope sleight of hands abilities. One day, my dear ole Dad decided to take a belt to me when he was at home on a break from work. Well, while he was swinging away with gusto, I cleaned his pockets of all the money he had on him at the time. Right after he left, my brother (who'd also been whipped) and I slipped out and gorged on all the candy and soda the money could buy! So much for learning the lesson he thought he was teaching. :-)
To this day, he has never figured out how he lost all that money that day.
On a more serious note. I figure that corporal punishment has a place for those very rare times that something has to be done that will get their attention and shock them into remembering the lesson. I'd rather my child had a sore behind than a lost eye, badly burnt hand, or worse. Over reliance on corporal punishment causes it to lose its shock value and makes it usless as a tool for correction. In some children it is usless anyway. I've seen hyperactives take some pretty severe spankings and go right straight back to the behavior that got them the spanking in the first place.
I once turned in a position paper in my intro to Sociology class where I made a case that fundies who say that the Bible tells them to use the rod liberally are on slippery ground from an NT viewpoint. My professor, who's PHD was in Divinity and somewhat conservative in his views gave me an A on the essay and penciled in high complements on my reasoning from the scriptures. I garauntee you that I didn't get that one from any of the Watchtower literature!

Watchtower books before 1963 that are still under copyright
by VM44 ini found this useful webpage that does a copyright renewal search.. http://www.scils.rutgers.edu/~lesk/copyrenew.htmlthis form searches the u. s. copyright renewal records.
any book published during the years 1923-1963 which is found in this file is still under copyright, as are all books published after 1964 (although until 1989 they still had to have proper notice and registration).
books published before 1923, or before jan. 1, 1964 and not renewed, are out of copyright.
