by Elsewhere inhttp://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=oddlyenoughnews&storyid=2006-05-04t160514z_01_l04689509_rtrukoc_0_us-hungary.xml.
hungary workers get shock at bottom of rum barrel.
budapest (reuters) - hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine website reported.. according to online magazine www.zsaru.hu, workers in szeged in the south of hungary tried to move the barrel after they had drained it, only to find it was surprisingly heavy and were shocked when the body of a naked man fell out.. the website said that the body of the man had been shipped back from jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return.. according to the website, workers said the rum in the 300-liter barrel had a "special taste" so they even decanted a few bottles of the liquor to take home.. .

I would like to encourage you in your pursuit of your Phd. I am looking at options myself concerning a graduate education of some sort now that I have my B.S.. It is sad to see so many of those I've noticed around doing that ending up Df'd. It's almost like the elders are going out of their way to scrutinize those with higher degrees and find some sort of way to haul them before JCs. I reckon it gives them some sort of a sick sense of power!

Can you people honestly say Gods Spirit is Guiding you?
What do you care about that anyway? But then your next line told us you don't really care at all. You are just trying to impress upon us all how superior you really are anyway.
How like the Pharisees of old you are!

Could we have stumbled onto the reason behind the higher education thing ?
by Forscher inin the mid 1990s the wtbts backed-off just a little bit on its stance about higher education publically while it was still discouraged unofficially.
now, all of a sudden they are publically clamping back down.
and coincidentally they are clamping back down just as ben schroeder was entering his final year or years at columbia law school.

Think about it.
In the mid 1990s the WTBTS backed-off just a little bit on its stance about higher education publically while it was still discouraged unofficially. Now, all of a sudden they are publically clamping back down. And coincidentally they are clamping back down just as Ben Schroeder was entering his final year or years at Columbia Law School. Now is it really coincidental that they loosened their stance about the time he sought to get his education? Is it also coincidental that they are clamping down now that he is finishing up? I don't recall seeing that aspect of the topic explored here. And I don't think it is all that coincidental at all though I can't prove it.
What burns me up about the whole affair is not that Ben got his education. Rather it is that he may have done so on my dime (my contributions to the worldwide work), with the Governing Body's blessing by means of relaxation of the policy during his schooling so his father wouldn't look like a hypocrite, while I was being harrassed by the local BOE for trying to get mine.
I just want to spit nails!!

Lying Elder???
by Confucious inthis is a bizarre thread.
but i was talking to an elder and he was asking me if i've sinned.
but we are all unclean.

It also sounds to me like he was fishing. That's one of the reasons I have nothing to do with them anymore. One always has to be careful what one says to a fellow Dub anymore, even if that fellow Dub is one's spouse!

When you were a witness, did you ever wonder where the GOOD witnesses were?
by BizzyBee ini grew up in the borg and can remember feeling a disconnect with the portrayal of witness behavior in the literature and what i actually experienced.
the stories from the yearbook about people wanting to study with witnesses "thirsty for knowledge of the truth" were so different from the responses i got in the fs, where people just seemed annoyed.
the pictures of happy folk and families of all colors looking toward some ray of light, united in the love for jehoober and each other, did not square with what was going on in my congo.

Do you remember those families who kept to themselves and you were often told to stay away from them? More often than not those were the good Witnesses. They were the ones who would show up and help you if you needed it without asking for the "permission" of the elders. They were the ones who could be counted on when somthing needed to be done. They were also the brothers who just couldn't seem to get appointed ministerial servant or elder in the congregation but were used in various unofficial ways by the elders because their favorited couldn't be counted on. Those families were often not invited to get togethers of the friends and NEVER were invited to the get togethers of the "in" crowd. They were kind of like our friend Ritchie who helped those in need but was constantly in trouble with the elders.
You didn't see them because they were considered on the fringes of the congregations and you were not supposed to see them. THAT was what I noticed during my years in the Borg.

Are you tired of the whole atheist/believer debate?
by nicolaou ini'm usually the first one to stir this particular pot but it get's so frustrating to keep coming up against the same old arguments.
the phrase "banging your head against a brick wall" springs to mind.
how many times have believers argued for a designer but refused to answer the obvious question of the designer's origin?.

1. Most all horrible inhumane acts in human history are connected to some form of religion
2. There is no evidence to support that people who believe in God are acually morally superior than those who arn't
3. This is simply an arugment of 'We are better than You' and is actually quite insulting and anyone would defend themselves in this situation.
I kind of like you SOL. But I would like to point out the following in regards to your points:
1. That is arguable. Certainly the most horrible crimes against fellow humans in modern times can be laid at the feet of "enlightened" atheists. Untold millions were tortured and killed in horrible ways in the Soviet Union, China, and other Communist lands. Many of the methods used easily compete with anything ever dreamed up by religonists. I am not saying that religionists are blameless by any means. But the record of atheists, from the time of the French Revolution onward, is certainly no better.
2. Your point is well taken. It is a fact that institutional religious groups like the Roman Catholic Church prove your point. When the institution sees no authority greater than itself, morals kind of go out the window. So I will concede it.
3. I will concede your third point as well with the proviso that we usually see the same argument from both sides. That is part of what makes the whole debate so irritating to everybody.
The sad thing is that the debate between theists and atheists usually draws out the fanatics on both sides and all the rules get tossed out the window. We tend to forget that how we interpret the evidence is dependent on our point of view and we start judging the other side with an oh so superior attitude. It is not just the theists who do that by any means. In virtually every discussion I've engaged in with atheists they've usually been alot faster than I've been to start the name calling and insults. THAT is why I've not been quite so fast to enter these discussions of late. After taking AlanF down a peg in one such debate on ethics, I decided that it just wasn't worth all the trouble to try and have a civil discussion. So I left the atheists to the fanatics!
