i think i came across something that i'd rather not want so i'm going to test it on the next person that posts on this thread.

Thanks V for being the guinea pig...it didn't work...phew...I'm so glad.

I accidentally "edited" on the ohio state v lsu thread thinking it was a "link" and it popped up as if I was able to edit peoples posts and I backed out.

So I tried editing your post and it said "access denied"...I'm glad of that because I didn't want the responsibility of having that option. If a person clicks on "edit" with a different poster it looks like you're able to edit that post. Scared me for a moment...lol

i got this parrot from a friend who used to be a jw and i don't know if i can keep him (i think he is a he) because he has a nasty habit that i can't break him from.. he is driving me crazy with his nasty habit.. i am having a hard time going to sleep even though i cover his cage at night.. does anyone have any suggestions other than cooking him in the oven?.

i really don't want to get rid of him but something has to be done... soon.. .

Heehee, there is a solution for that...keep her away from the walls.

in all honest, you should keep her from the wall, not only because it will destroy your wall but stuff in the wall can hurt her. What about a pet "play" gym? Or give her something interesting to chew like a calcuim bone or something else she can destroy. Parrots do like to rip and shred things up. You can even get "bird ropes" that look like dog ropes. I've even when to the dog section and got my bird some dog ropes because they are cheaper.

oops! this was meant for hl but she deleted her post...oh well, still, new bird owners need to know this.

Does your African Grey like men?

My Grey can warm up to anyone if they are not "jumping" at him or if they allow him to get use to the first. Though, he does prefer me because I'm the "Top Bird" so to speak. I'm the "leader" of "our" flock.

He has let several people hold him only if they are slow and allow him to decide. My bird has bitten me but that was because he warned me first and I didn't listen. My bird will nibble gently, then get harder and if I still don't listen he'll bite even harder. I can tell though because when my bird starts to get irritated with me his little face will actually turn red...lol and of course he starts pin pointing me. Pin pointing is when their eye pupils become smaller and they will even look a bit irritated.

apples are great but be careful with the seeds because they can be toxic to birds as well.

Chocolate, avocado and rhubarb should not be fed. Of course, do not give any beverages containing caffeine or alcohol. Avoid processed meats or other foods high in nitrates, nitrites, sulfites, or monosodium glutamate (MSG). Onions, sprouted lima, fava and navy beans, fruit pits and apple seeds should also be avoided.

I let my pets eat with me too but I hardly ever give them people food.

Actually, parrots need "people" food such as corn, green beans, SMALL amount of cheese, eggs and such. My bird just ate some corn. Of course, don't over do it, they need their pellet foods as well as some seeds. Peanuts are for treats only because they are very fatty. My bird loves corn/green beans/ and such...

If I can remember right (correct me restrangled or FF if I'm wrong please) Broccoli and Cauliflower is also a no-no.

How's about some help with his vocabulary.
Let's start with replacing "Get your bookbag" and substitute something that has "Get your (fill in the blank)"
He drove me nuts until I dug out the last bookbag I bought but never used in FS and let him see me stuffing it full of Watchtowers.
Then I went outside for 10 minutes and he was satisfied with my 'token' FS... at least for the time-being.

Good, one thing at a time.

How about something to the affect of "get your coffee"...or "get your lunch"... If you actually stuff a bookbag and go outside, he may continue to say the thing you don't want him to say.

Here's and idea....when he says that...you say "get your (whatever/coffee/lunch) and THEN go to the door and open it and shut it. See what happens. Go back in and say "mmmm, that's good coffee (or whatever). Then praise HIM as if he did it.

I'll try to think of other things.

Oh, and you mentioned that you "know" he's a boy? Both female and male Greys are very difficult to know. They can act and do like either or. The best way to determine what sex your bird is is by doing a dna test. The pet store thought Kito was a girl and called her Gracie. I done a DNA test and "she" was a "he".

Sometimes you can tell if they are a female or male by their eyes but that is also not easy to do.

I have been using Watchtower and AWAKE! magazines to line his cage.
Four of them side-by-side just about cover the bottom of the cage.
Do you think that they may be harmful to his mental health?

LOL, may cause him to be controlled more in the cult since he'll be reading as well...

Just be careful with the color ink. The newspapers use to use something that could have been harmful, I'm not sure what that was but I think they stopped using that kind of ink. At any rate, I stay away from inks that are colored. New's papers that are in black ink is what I use. I won't even use the adds if they have color in them. That's a "just in case".

BTW, do African Grey parrots need a mate to be happy?

No, they do not need a mate...this is a misconception on most people's parts. In fact, if you do get him a mate, you are taking the chance of him not wanting to bond with you. And on top of that, sometimes the "mate" you pick out for them they will not like. Just like humans, they may not like the personality of the new bird and then you'll end up with two birds that don't like each other.

Spending time with your grey and training him will make him happy. Learn his language and he'll learn yours.

I spoiled that boy rotten and allowed him to have his flight feathers. We had a screened in pool with a large tree in the center. So he loved to go out and fly and sit in the tree.

He sounds like he was spoiled. I'm so sorry...I do know what it's like losing a bird. My Cheeko death still hurts my heart to this day and it's been over 2 years, partly because I think I was the one that caused her death.

Like you, I allow Kitto to keep his flight feathers, and I do worry about him escaping but I can't bring myself to cut his flight feathers because he loves to fly around in the apartment. I'm even paranoid because I'm afraid the ceiling fan my be accidentally turned on while he's out. When my bird is out he's with me every moment or he's back in his cage.

There is a lot to learn about these wonderful birds...
