I do know what you're talking about. I don't think it's possible to live in that state 100% of the time, nor is it desirable. Freud's definition of the ego was posted. The superego is also important--that which contains our morality and concern for others--and cannot exist without a concept of "I".

Obliteration of the ego
by logansrun inat long last i feel i have come to a great spiritual truth: the human ego stands as an impediment towards self-realization and must be obliterated, or at least diminished.
i have seen this as a running thread throughout many of the readings i have done -- from buddha and shankara to meister eckhart to arch-skeptic and atheist dr. albert ellis, the idea is to get beyond this concept of i. .
what freedom this could be!

JW False Teachings About Roman Catholics
by rebel8 inapologies if this has been done before.... .
when i left the troof, i happened to learn many of the things i had been taught about rcs were lies.
i thought it would be interesting to see how many jw false teachings about rcs we can list.

Just because dissenters in the US don't believe it, doesn't change the fact that at Mass, the wine and host becomes the body and blood of Christ.
Gotta disagree with you there. Religion is not universal and uniform as dubs try to claim. Religion is created by humans to meet their personal spiritual and emotional needs. Though people who belong to a religion may share many common beliefs, they are free to and do disagree on some things that may seem fundamental to that religion. That's what any group of humans is like in reality (religions, corporations, clubs, etc.). Cults demand abandonment of independent thinking and dissention; religions do not.
So say I'm a RC who doesn't believe in the whole literal blood and body thing. Does that mean it's still true despite me disbelieving it? No. (Believing it doesn't make it true either. Proof is what makes it true, and there is none.)
I am not claiming there are no RCs who believe this doctrine. I am claiming that most do not.

I am just in total shock. I went to the quotes link from the thread noted above. I am totally disgusted. I had no idea about any of that. I will be adding a link to that on my web site.
Unbelievable.

Interesting story. Why don't they do this with child molesters instead of innocent people accused of assault?

Why don't people put anyting in ther bio????
by Lehaa in.
was just looking at the depression post and looking at pepole's biography.. why doesn't a lot of members put anything in there bio.. i undersatnd that many may not want to be identified, but i think bio makes it easier for us to undersand each others history.

I actually did put info in my bio, more than I'm comfortable with. Why not more?
- I do not want to be labeled an apostate because of the destruction that would do to my mother. (Not that she doesn't deserve it.) I do not care if I'm DFd or whatever for speaking out because that would have no affect on me personally whatsoever.
- I do not want my employer to find proof I use the computer all day for personal use. (Not that my boss isn't well aware I have no work to do and won't allow me to start projects on my own.)
- I do not want my local community to find out I was a JW because it would hurt my career (and social standing, to a lesser degree). I have suffered enough for being a JW in the past, I will not allow any more.
- I need to keep my past JW status a secret because it would reflect on my extended family, who are somewhat prominent and do not need me bringing them embarassment to serve my own selfish desire to vent.
Reason enough?

The Noble Art Of Tolerance.
by Englishman inone thing that used to grieve me about my childhood.
whenever i misbehaved - which was quite often running total of all my mistakes.
consequently, it only took the slightest thing to put her tolerance level over the top.

You are 104 years old so surely you've seen the publications in the '80s that told parents and spouses not to keep track of past transgressions and bring them up just for the sake of berating the person you're arguing with. As a kid I used to point this stuff out to my mother ...her violations of what the literature said to do (not to say "I love you but you do such and such wrong", keeping track of mistakes, refusing to give kids reasons for saying no to requests, not spanking solely out of frustration, etc.)....of course that never worked...it would just earn me a session with the wooden spoon and earned me the title of "fresh, snotty snip".

"If WTS is so intent on recruiting new members then...
by rebel8 in...why are they also so intent on kicking people out?
you'd think they'd want to be more lax in order to keep their membership numbers up.
"--question asked by my non-jw husband.

The responses so far have been really insightful...and amusing
This question touches on the larger problem I see with many people's perspective of the organization on this board, that is, dichotomous and simplistic thinking. It's either "Watchtower totally good and benign" versus "Watchtower evil, money-loving, hypocritical."
The unfortunate thing is not that the WT is hypocritical, but that it is sincere.
Veeery interesting. Could you say more about that?...for example: How do you see this thread's question as revealing the dichotomy you spoke of?
The last sentence there--what do you mean by that? Do you mean the WTS is hypocritical but its biggest flaw is that members adhere to its rules without question, believing they are doing the right thing?

Any parents out there who refused blood for their kids?
by rebel8 inif you are out there, i would really appreciate you sharing your experience with me.
i am an ex-jw with a serious disease that has required blood transfusions from time to time throughout my life.
when i was a child, my jw mother went to great lengths, not only to withhold transfusions, but to avoid needed preventative and emergency medical care for fear it may result in blood being forced upon me.

When I was a child, my JW mother went to great lengths, not only to withhold transfusions, but to avoid needed preventative and emergency medical care for fear it may result in blood being forced upon me. I was near death many times.
What I am struggling with is this: Why did a natural maternal instinct not override blind obedience to WTS? I know brainwashing is involved, but I guess I don't understand why the parental instinct didn't counteract it. I am not a parent myself, so I may not fully understand. I have pets, for example, and I would be willing to break a law if necessary in order to save them from harm, even if it meant criminal penalties and social shame.
Is there more than brainwashing at work here? Was it the threat of DFing or death at Armageddon? Did you base your medical decisions on false medical information provided by WTS?
I'm sure this must be a terribly difficult topic for you and I applaud your courage in discussing it with me. Please know that I am not here to criticize you, only to understand...in the hopes I may be able to figure my mother out.
Respectfully, rebel8
Edited to add: I probably won't get any responses to this thread, but thought it was worth trying.
