There was a special talk, of course, in which the overseer told the congregation that 'the time is at hand', that 'preaching has stop already in over 20 countries' and that 'the great tribulation has started'.
___
THE TIME IS NOT AT HAND -- IT'S ONLY 20 COUNTRIES OUT OF 235 LANDS WHERE THE PREACHING HAS STOPPED. (Not shouting at you danny, I am expressing a 'bigger tone' in my voice...) The overseer obviously doesn't read his WT articles very well. I was looking at a Watchtower yesterday and saw "all the lands" they preach in. They can only say that the great tribulation has started WHEN IT'S IN ALL 235 LANDS!
I wish the elders would stop jumping the gun at these issues.

Big claims made that simply arn't true
by drew sagan ina number of posts on the board have got me thinking back to the time when i first became aquainted with jehovhah's witnesses.
many things that i was told (an probably no doubt many of you) where the ramblings of people are so dedicated to their religious system that it clouds all basic judgement.
here are some of the things i was told by certain members (mostly elders) that have panned out to be actual lies.

drew sagan,
I was almost physically sick (not to mention paranoid) by reading it's contents, affraid that I would be "caught".

I hate that perception that people had. I didn't think twice when I walked into a bookstore and picked up a pagan book -- doesn't mean I believe/like it. Just curious!
Just because you pick up Ray's book/s, doesn't mean that agree with him. You just want to know what's "out there." :)
Fire away and so those sort of things if people accuse you of ____ like that! -

Sleeping at assemblies and conventions
by free2beme inmy in-laws still attend meetings and defend the faith to the best of their limited ability.
i saw limited, as their understanding of the faith ended somewhere around the 1980's and when you bring up new understanding, they think it might be apostate and do not listen.
there not alone, trust me, several witnesses do not grasp the changes.

Way back in the early 70s we had our conventions in outside colliseums. Then it was very hard to stay awake.
But I learned to take notes and usually was able to keep my eyes open.
We also had farm animals to feed and water and pets to secure. (It became a pattern that a pet would die during assembly time for one reason or another)
By the time I had lunches packed and people packed and we were on our way I was pooped. Im sure I nodded some during the talks.
By the third day I was an emotional wreck and contemplating suicide as a way out!
I remember one convention day I forgot my reading glasses and was forced to sit out the day virtually blind.
____
Reading that story made me sad for 2 reasons:
1 The dead animals at every convention...
2 The fact that you were doing this in the 1970's -- Wow I'd love to live back then and have a great time! Such a fun era! :D -

Just say these things ...
CANNED ANSWER
They really focused on putting Jehovah first and that we need to not grow cold and weak in these last days. There was some experiences on people who have had some troubles, but put Jehovah first and trusted in him and things are getting better. They pointed out that people will hate us one day, and pulling free of nonbelievers now will keep us evenly yoked in the end days to carry on threw it. Also they mentioned how it is key to remember prayer and not be fooled by Satan's world of faults information, in forms like the internet that is full of Satan is trying to pull you away. They even had a couple mention how overuse of the internet, nearly ruined their marriage and more important, their relationship with Jehovah. Overall, it was very encouraging and sister such and such is pregnant now and remember that little boy "place name here" he is a ministerial servant now and engaged to be married.
Sorry, spent a long time behind the Witness bars.
______
LOL That's what I like about this board!!!! :D It's amazing how people can tell you what's going on in JW world and we don't even have to attend to find out! SOMEONE WILL JUST POST IT HERE! Incredible!

The Passion of the Christ Movie
by arwen ini am watching this movie for the first time and it has subtitles and is in another language.
i am wondering if this is the way it is or if i have rented the wrong version.
i can hardly watch it as it is very disturbing and i feel so bad for jesus.

Never watched it! Seems like a Catholic Jesus to me. But you never know, I could change my mind some day. When I found out that they portray Satan as a woman... that has caused me to never see it ever!

A big clincher for us was reading Edmond Gruss' book on the four presidents of the Watchtower. Bit of a challenge to read as there are appendices in the back that you must repeated turn to as you read, but talk about slam dunk.
____
When you said slam dunk + Gentile Times Reconsidered, it sparked off a thought in my head -- When Carl Jonson wrote Gentile Times, it's the equivalent of 9/11 planes hitting the Watchtower building! -

I had to order mine in from the US. I had already left and just wanted to make sure i wold never want to go back. The book is definately full of anti GB experiences. I still have not fully read it. Its pretty full on. To go back or not is in your own heart, not in this book. We were all part of the witness religion because we believed without question everything we were told and everything we were told to read.
___
I don't know why in God's world why anyone would want to return! I just don't understand! It's out my realms of comprehension. Unless they like lots and lots of long speeches and lots and lots of people wearing suits and ties! :) It's up to them, I guess. They must have been lucked out in Russian Roulette! :D
