I knew no fig trees was a sign of the last days!
Most of my family still makes jams, jellies, canned fruits from fresh fruit picked in their own back yards.

hi guys,.
my name is ruari phillips, i'm 21 years old and if possible...i'd like to ask a question.. jehovahs witnesses believe the world is getting worse and that as time passes we are approaching armageddon.. but, haven't we always lived in a cruel world?.
since the begginning of time we've been killing each other, there's been diseases, death and destruction.

YES things are much much worse than when I was growing up...It was paradise when I was growing up compared to today.
Do you know that when you were a child people were saying the same thing you are saying? I'll find the quotes if you like.
I suppose you believe the Society when they say it was so peacful prior to 1914 but then when WWI happened that all changed?

AND it happens still.
Again ... is the question you are asking:
Do bad things happen?
or
Are things WORSE than when you were "growing up"?
I agree it happens in Central Park still. But is it WORSE than when you were growing up? I doubt it?
Are there more cops in NYC than when you were "growing up"? Yes.
Are there more people in NYC than when you were "growing up"? Yes.
Makes sense there would be more cops, don't you think?

My wife will laugh if she reads this. Did I grow up with a wood burning stove? YES I DID. (Lopi brand actually) It heated our whole house.
My whole family would split the wood, stack it every year. I was the one that loaded the wood in all year for our house - rain shine or snow.
Wood burning stoves was the fuel of choice for most of the homes where I come from.
Not sure what this has to do with anything - or how this was supposed to discredit me .... but I'll go with it ...
Additionally, is there pollution problems? Yes! And there likely always will be. I thought the question was not "ARE there problems?" but instead "Are problems getting worse?"
It seems to me you are using the false argument method of 'slightly tweaking the question" in the middle of the argument.
So what are we talking about? Are we talking about if there ARE problems? (To which I answer yes ... there always has been.) Or, are we talking about if problems are WORSE? (To which I think you already know my answer.)

In my county in NY we hear of child abuse all the time , mostly done by drug induced parents
In the "old days" you would simply never hear of these cases. You act as if there were no drug induced parents back then. Prior to 1914, it was fact that if you walked through Central Park in NYC you WOULD be mugged by drug addicts - and likely killed. (I have the documented proof of this if you require it.) Today women can jog through Central Park with little worries. Additionally, you could not walk through the streets of Manhattan ANYWHERE at night without getting mugged. If you were out at night it was YOUR fault you got mugged. It was just the reality of life. Not anymore.
Golf:
The story I shared was on the evening TV news, the news also reported that if your caught leave your car idleing for 3 minutes you can be fined from $50.00 to $450.00! Why? Air pollution.
(a) if it was on the news then it MUST be true! Most of what we watch on the evening news is far from the truth. In your "old age" you should be aware of this.
(b) in the "old days" they had no reliable way of even measuring air pollution. Even when they did the old codgers back then didn't believe these new thinkers. Be glad your government is aware and working to correct the problem!
My point being is, today we have locks, alarm systems, watch dogs and video cameras, why? If we truly trust each other why all the safety protective features?Alarm systems, watch dogs, and video cameras have helped to curb crime significantly. Educate yourself man! This is why crime rates are going down. Additionally,If you even wanted an alarm system of CCTV Video camera system back then, it would have been impossible to get one. These items were not widespread "back then" because (a) technology was not good enough (b) even when it was, it wasn't affordable or easy to install/use.

We currently leave our house unlocked all the time. We also leave our cars in the driveway unlocked and often I leave my wallet in the console of my car overnight. Sometimes the keys are still in the ignition from moving it around the driveway.

This past week the news reported that the city of Montreal will be demanding better wood burning stoves because the present stoves are emitting to much pollution. Getting better?
That is such small-minded line of reasoning. That sounds like a news story a JW would use in a piblic talk. Forget the fact that once they switch to better wood-burning stoves it WILL get better. Air pollution is getting better in many parts of the world - and now in MOntreal it will be getting better too.
There are always things that need work - but to throw your hands up and give up and say you are gonna wait on the Watchtower's Jehovah to fix things is infantile reasoning - not to mention a weak defeatist attitude.
Let me say during my growing up days, it was news to hear a child dying in my community, today, its no news.
The arguments you are giving are textbook mythical arguments.
Because that is the case in your area, does that mean it is the case EVERYWHERE?
Are you sure you are not confusing LOCAL deaths of children with deaths of other children you might hear about in the national or world news?
Are you sure you aren't lumping local and national and world news casualties into one big group and saying that you hear about a child dying all the time?
I bet Montreal is alot larger than when you were a kid. Perhaps there are more children in Montreal that die because THERE ARE MORE CHILDREN IN MONTREAL!
Geez man ...

announced this am at crooklyn that long time bethelite karl adams has died.. we didn't know him well, just a passing acquaintance from times past.
Karl Adams was my school conductor for a couple of years while I was at Bethel, in the Brooklyn Heights congregation.
He came alive onstage, but offstage always seemed sad and resigned. This fascinated me at the time.
One time I took an opportunity to sit next to him at lunch. I said, "So are you working on anything cool in the Writing Department?" To which he gave me a gentle but firm tongue lashing about how they never talk about anything before it is published. We basically sat in silence for the rest of the lunch.
That was the end of me trying to get to know Karl Adams.
Another memory of him was one time when Albert Schroeder (GB Member) gave the Instruction Talk at the Ministry School (yes it WAS a trip to be on the same school as GB members). He went off on the NWT and the NWT committee and how GREAT it was for about 30 minutes! He was so badly overtime and clueless that he was even overtime. It was noticed and you could tell everyone in the audience was uncomfortable about how Karl Adams was gonna deal with this blatant misuse of time in the Ministry School by a GB member.
Karl Adams just got up and pretended like nothing happened. Like nothing was wrong.
Typical reaction by the WT I guess ....

i've read posts from time to time where it is obvious that people have been treated badly by either a jc or by individual elder themselves while in the society.
i can honestly say that in all my years as an elder, i have never seen this side.
most elders that i have known are committed, honest and fair minded men, who believe in what they are doing and have complete and utter faith in the organization.
Most elders that I have known are committed, honest and fair minded men, who believe in what they are doing and have complete and utter faith in the organization.
These men are COMPLETELY CONVINCED they are God's sole channel and that Jehovah is using them and giving them holy spirit that guides them in their decisions.
No matter how nice or well meaning they are - that ONE FACT ALONE is a recipe for disaster.
There are many elders I love to death, and there are some that I have seen beaten down for their honesty.
BUt as another poster once said, the whole system is flawed.
