I've considered Randy to be a good close friend for more than 20 years. My how time flies. Randy is not only my friend, but my mentor. I refer to Randy's Freeminds site constantly with my own forum members and support group. There isn't a better site for information on JW's anywhere, but Randy's Freeminds site. Great Job Randy! Are birthdays now a "conscience matter" for JWs?
by Elsewhere ina few months ago my jw sister emailed me out of the blue asking for me to suggest a good telescope for her little girl (about 12, but i'm not sure).
my niece has had a strong interest in science since she was very little and my sister is trying to encourage her.
if you are wondering, yes, my sister and her jw husband do shun me... so basically she got the info she needed and then disappeared again.

Here is an article from the July 8, 2004 Awake Magazine, page 30:
********************************************************** PiñatasI read with interest the article "The Piñata—An Ancient Tradition." (September 22, 2003) It left me with some questions. The ties to false religion are well-documented. But the article seemed to take the position that as long as it doesn’t bother someone’s conscience, it is OK. What about birthdays and holidays such as Christmas? S. W., United States"Awake!" responds: Christians refrain from any celebrations or customs that continue to involve false religious beliefs or activities that violate Bible principles. For example, the Bible definitely puts birthday celebrations in a bad light. (Genesis 40:20; Matthew 14:6-10) However, if it is very obvious that a custom has no current false religious significance and involves no violation of Bible principles, each Christian must make a personal decision as to whether he will follow such a custom.

WTS requesting insurance checks? Verification?
by EscapedLifer1 ini have read comments on several threads about the wts policy on asking folks whose homes have been repaired/rebuilt by jw volunteers to sign over their insurance checks to the wts?.
is there any kind of paper proof of this policy anywhere?
any further details would be kindly appreciated!!.

I think this would be worth an IRS audit. When charitable organizations give "disaster relief" they MUST provide documentation on WHO they helped and the cost involved. They DO NOT ask for anyone to contribute their insurance checks.
I'm not in the insurance business, but I would guess that this could be classified as insurance fraud. I do know tax law, and it seems by the WT doing everything under the umbrella of the WWW, they escape under a loophole so they don't have to substantiate ANYTHING, when involved in disaster relief. In fact, technically, they aren't even involved in disaster relief because they have no fund set up for it. All non profit organizations must have FUND accounts set up that are supposed to function as indicated for the budget they present.

Question about the JW Hurricane Katrina "Relief"
by Brymichmom init was relayed to me by a friend that in order for jw's to get "help" from other jw's, that they needed to fill out a form (to make sure that they were jw's) and answer questions concerning how active they are and meeting attendance.
if the meeting attendance was low or if they were "inactive", then they weren't going to be taken in or helped.
in the situation that was relayed to me, a jw woman with a couple of teenaged girls was asking for help.

If the meeting attendance was low or if they were "inactive", then they weren't going to be taken in or helped. In the situation that was relayed to me, a JW woman with a couple of teenaged girls was asking for help. After filling out the form, the JW doing the "relief effort" noted that since the family was inconsistent or low in their meeting attendance that in order to be helped they must now start attending all of the meetings and submit to a lot of other requirements. The teenaged girls were NOT happy about having to submit to all of that.
It ended up that this JW woman and her 2 teenaged daughters were helped by another church organization (no strings attached) who took them in. The JW was quite surprised about being helped by this "church" even though she was a JW.
Does this sound right? Is this the "norm" among JW's when they are helping "their own"? Do they only help other JW's who are "active" and have high meeting attendance, and forget about those who have low meeting attendance and don't go out in "field service"?
