facts about the JW religion
by Dawn ini'm putting together a brochure for release in my area - to local churches and bookstores.
on the first panel i want to explain to the reader why the jw religion is not a "harmless" little church.
so i decided to list in bullet format a few facts that the average person may not be aware of.. for example, bullet 1 will be information on the number of children who have died because of refusing blood (any ideas where i can find exact numbers??).

Curiousity about current JW Views on going into churches
by Brymichmom ini've been following a thread on another forum where jw's are insisting that it is ok for them to go inside churches for weddings, funerals, etc.
they say it's quite ok to go inside any church just as long as they don't participate in the service by singing, praying, kneeling...etc...some of them say that they have seen "guest speakers" in churches who came as watchtower representatives.
when did this ever change?

When did this ever change? My experience (and I've been out 24 years) has always been that JW's do not enter a church for any reason, no if's ands or buts. In my family, those who are still JW's definitely WILL NOT go inside a church. In fact, when my grandmother died (she was not JW), my JW brother was supposed to be a pall bearer. Well he did the pall bearer job as far as the church steps and then "handed off" to another cousin because he couldn't go inside the church. This was just in 1999. My mother and aunt refuse to go to family weddings that are inside any kind of church. Yet these JW's on this other forum say it's perfectly permissible for them to go inside churches just as long as they are not participating in the service.
Are these real changes, or are these JW's just practicing so-called "theocratic warfare"? I'm assuming that these JW's are elders and not the average JW.
I would appreciate any of your input. Thank you very much.

Looking for a link--need help
by Brymichmom ini once saw a website posted that showed a "real time" chart of religious bodies throughout the world.
it showed the numbers of each religious group and it actually would show the growth or decline in real time.
does anyone know what i'm talking about?

What JW Teaching Did You Never Quite Totally Accept???
by minimus insince i was raised a witness, it was only as i got older that i started to "think" about what i was teaching and believing.
but even as a young teen, i never accepted the thought that 1975 was going to be the end of the "system of things" and the beginning of the "new system".
i just didn't quite believe that.........what belief or teaching did you have a "hard time swallowing"?

I never carried a "no blood" card. I didn't believe in not accepting a transfusion if it meant losing my life. I remember that someone gave me a blood card, but I never carried it. I just thought that if I were ever in a serious accident, that I could feign being unconscious and get away with it. After having child of my own, I absolutely could never allow my child to die either.

Looking for reference to pre-1981 view of disfellowshipped family members

On Free Minds there an article concerning disfellowshipping, http://www.freeminds.org/psych/disfell.htm; here is an excerpt:
"Oddly enough, in April of '74 they had seemingly relaxed the tension towards disfellowshiped persons. In the April l974 WT, for instance, on page 467, they said:
- Congregation elders, as well as individual members of a congregation, therefore, ought to guard against developing an attitude approaching that which some Jewish Rabbinical writers fomented towards Gentiles in viewing them as virtual enemies.
The gist of the article was that disfellowshiped ones were not to be treated with unnecessary cruelty; especially members of one's family or those in obvious hardship situations. They stated that 'we don't want to be like Pharisees' who walked on the other side of the road when a Gentile was in trouble. (WT Aug. 1, 1974, p. 467.) "
With those references, you can probably find the complete articles you are looking for.

Wilderness Park is at the center of this map (I hope it comes out) right next to the Rio San Gabriel River on Little Lake Road, right off the 605 Freeway. Please call me if you have any questions on how to get there. I look forward to seeing all of you there. Also please call me and let me know that you are coming so I can plan for the barbecue. Also, please bring side dishes, such as potato salad, chips, drinks etc....Or whatever you can think of to bring. Don't forget desserts too! We will have a great time! Please email me if you plan on coming at [email protected]. Thank you! -

Alcohol and the Witness
by Maverick inwhen i first was studying with the duds, one of the things i found interesting is that duds are ok with drinking alcohol, "in moderation".
i never was a big drinker, usually one drink if i'm out and will have to drive and no more than three in any 24 hour period, even if i'm staying home.. i wonder if the fact the "the judge" was a rumpot contributed to the soft attitude on alcohol?
most of the brothers i knew were big drinkers and many of the older elders drank more with dinner that i drink in a weekend.

And here my mother thought that when my father became a baptized JW, that it would solve his problem with alcoholism. My father is a lifelong alcoholic and I believe that my mother became a JW just as an escape because she was so unhappy.
About 3 years after my sister and I left the WT, my father starts to study and became baptized. Did he ever quit drinking? No, I think his alcoholism even became worse. Now my mother is stuck with a baptized JW for a husband she cannot leave or be "scripturally divorced" from. She's definitely stuck, but she sure holds on to her WT values and teachings. Meanwhile, my dad is now quite sickly but continues to abuse alcohol. He's never been DF'd for being a drunk. My mother has tried to sic the elders on him, but it only resulted in a "private reproof", LOL!
Everyone at the KH feels sorry for my mother because she has an alcoholic for a husband and 2 apostate daughters! Oh my, where did she go wrong in life????

Can a witness receive a massage?
by JH in.
just wondering if witnesses are aloud to go and receive a massage and be touched by other than their spouse?
i'm talking about a normal clean massage here, don't get me wrong.. .

Well apparently, my cousin who is an active JW is going to school to become a licensed massage therapist. As far as I know, it's "A-Ok" with the elders.
