And before they do, they attempt to validate their delusions the only way they know how; by demanding from their followers the greatest single act of devotion.

Waco, Jonestown, and even the utter leveling of Germany were all examples of tyrannical cult leaders willing to sacrifice all their followers in order to cling to their megalomania until the last moments of their grotesquely misguided lives.

The three stooges : The Soviet politburo (Governing Body) produced Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko to lead the internally crumbling, yet outwardly bold and expansionist worker's paradise. They tried desperately to keep the people ignorant the democratizing and modernizing forces of the global economy. (internet, freedom of information). And of course there were three people who knew all to well that the "evil empire" was going to "crumble under the weight of it's internal contradictions" They knew it was "doomed to the ashheap of history". The last pages of that "sad and bizarre chapter in human history" were being written.

Reagan, Thatcher, and Pope John Paul (JWD, BRCI, Freeminds, SilentLambs, AJWRB) spoke openly, and confronted them with the impossible task of matching the economic and military might (intellectual honesty, free thought, and love of truth) of the free world. Even as their world crumbled around them (law suits, sending people home from Bethel, cutting back on printing, disbanding the Bethel Elders), they kept on as always deluded and tired. They sensed their danger, and moved to supress all dissent (wrote stupid articles against education, having a career, and not listening to new ideas). This only left them more detached, and unable to react to reality.

Gorby - Unable to deny reality any longer, a new leader emerged. He tried to hold on to power, while also opening his society to measured freedoms. But freedom long suppressed, once tasted, becomes an insatiable desire. The dam broke. The hardliners tried to force a failed coup. The dream of the workers paradise (paradise earth) was dead.

Living in a divided home

Have you been able to find compromises that seem to work?

Well it has been easier for me to find compromises. We married as non-jw, and then she joined. She made the change. In your situation, you made the change.

You aren't what she wanted to be married to.

The most toxic aspect of the jw psyche, as well as the biggest problem they have within their interpersonal relationships with non-jw's is they are certain they are right. All their bad behaviour is justified because they have the truth. You are less since you don't. Very loving isn't it. The simple fact is that two people can process the same information, use the identical system of logic (or so they think), and arrive at completely different conclusions. Human beings are simply incapable of being perfectly objective. This is the one thing that no person can deny, and is a key aspect of our fallibility. No matter how smart or knowledgeable we are, no person is immune from the need for self-delusion. It is the one common denominator we all share, and is implicit in all compromise. No person can ever be completely certain that they aren't biased in some hidden way to a certain conclusion.

First off, the mistake you made (no offense) is that you approached it as an issue with the jw. The problem with that is she is under the influence of mind control and unable to process any information contrary to that imposed mindset.

Forget about researching the jw. Research cults. (Read Steven Hassan's Combatting Cult Mind COntrol, and Releasing the Bonds)

Just keep making sure she knows you love her. Try to fill in the holes in all the othe parts of your marriage. Get as close to her as you can. Build up her trust in you, that you are still a decent man, and you still want nothing more than that her best interests are served. As far as your religious convictions. Make it plainly known they are matters of conscience, not convenience. You are just following God with the conscience HE gave to you, not the conscience of anybody else. And don't put up with any crap over that.

People with no experience with mind control will assume she didn't want to leave. They will assume that if she wanted to leave she would have.

All it took was for a man at a convenience store to talk to her. It broke the spell for her.

But alas, after many precious years lost, never to be regained.

A happy ending I guess. As happy as it could be.

i have been rivited by the stories of all the epiphanies that took place.. but actually i think there was a great deal that must have taken place to allow that moment.. what gave you the confidence in yourself to trust your own thoughts?

what personal growth took place?

These are all pretty good responses. I have thought about this question some more.

What I am really asking are what were the external influences? That led to questioning, but also gave you the confidence to use your own mind to question the org.

Many have answered with those already.

Fair enough Blondie. Thanks for the clarification. I wouldn't want to seem to imply that if someone doesn't think I am funny they don't have a sense of humor...

I just remember another guy who said that he referred to Ray as "the king of the apostates" or something like that, and Ray didn't seem to get the humor or it.
