  here's the situation.

  my wife couldn't answer some deep issues i've raised regarding a few of the wts's teachings and dishonest representation of historical sources.

  naturally, she attributes her lack of answers to her own lack of research and knowledge.

  With respect to all who have posted some great lines of argument, I must point out an immutable fact of human nature.

  People mostly decide to believe what they want, and then use logic to justify it.

  You could provide a letter signed by God that says, "The JW's are a bunch of screwjobs engaging in delusions of grandeur", It wouldn't matter.

  The only time direct refutations of the dubs will have any positive effect on a dub is when they are already open to it (they ask you directly or they are already having doubts).

  If they are not, it only serves to alienate you from said dub.

  MJ already knows this, but some things bear repeating.

  The point here is not to win an argument (no reward except momentary satisfaction), but to help his wife to walk away.

  That goal is not served if he alienates her with an attack on her most cherished beliefs.

  You were 14? how old are you now? Why did your wife contact the kh? Why is this her beef? She doesn't think you can take care of your own problems?

  If there is action to be taken, and that is what you want, why didn't you contact the police?

  Well look dude, if you don't want to talk to these guys just tell them to buzz-off. Who cares what the smelders want.

  I know you are traumatized and all so take some time to think this through. Do you really want to destroy this womans marriage?

  I am just thinking out loud here. Take your time, and think about what it is you want to accomplish and why.

  Anyone know about the martial arts?

  my 11 year-old is getting picked on at school.

  he is not cut out for competitive sports and not interested.

  i've pushed my jw mindset aside and am considering letting him take a martial arts class (gasp).

  This Month's KM: Family Calendar?

  as many of you might have noticed, the may 2005 km has a group of 4 or 5 articles about scheduling family activities.

  it includes a blank week long calendar and little slips that you can cut out and paste onto the calendar.

  i think this is another crazy, last ditch effort to try and grab the remaining witnesses into the protective brood of the gb.

  Yeah, my wife showed that thing to me.

  I thought it was funny that they think they need to show people how to make a friggin schedule. They really have a very dim view of the r&f.

  Been meaning to tell you RR, I don't like many 17yr olds, but you are an exception. You crack me up.

  Get this, and have your boy and step dad take a look at it, and then spend the summer out in the yard beating the crap out of eachother.

  (Be glad you aren't a guy)

  It will be the funnest summer of his life. And it will help step dad and son build a good relationship. You'll be needing that when he is in high school.

  Call his school to see if they have a wrestling program, or any wrestling camps available.

  Next year when wrestling season comes sign him up.

  if you can't get him into wrestling or judo right away, there are some good books I could recomend that you could get. Him and Step-Dad could go through some of the wrestling stuff together to get him ready for next season.

  Penny,

  Ok, it sounds like the situation isn't to bad. He isn't getting pummeled or anything. Don't worry Mom, EVERYONE gets picked on some. It is good for him, so he knows what it feels like if he thinks about doing it to someone else.

  If you are just looking for fun, practical, and effective I would recommend judo or wrestling. The good thing about wrestling is it is free, and every school should have a program. It is a great sport for a kid who doesn't have a lot of size or strength because he will be matched up with other kids who are the same weight. Judo clubs are hard to come by sometimes, and can be pricey. During summer there are all sorts of wrestling camps available.

  The other nice thing about judo and wrestling is it allows you to handle someone as nicely as the situation calls for. If you don't need to cream a guy, you can wrap him up. If you need to really thump somone you can throw him on his head. He will still need to know how to hit someone if he has to. Step-dad can teach how to do that I am sure.

  If he whines when you tell him to go out for wrestling, pin him down and give him a nuggie. Keep doing this until he gets mad enough to do something about it.

  Step-Dad is around so he has someone to rough-house with. That is important.

  Escrima (love the sticks), weapons - bo, tonfa, sai
  Goju Ryu is a great style to learn cause it combines a good balance of the hard with the soft. the beginner katas are easy for kids to learn.

  No offense Will, I am sure you know your stuff, you could probably kick my butt, but this kid is going to get the crap kicked out of him tomorrow at school. He can't carry a bo, tonfa, or sai into the classroom.

  And the beginner katas may be easy to learn, but they won't do him any good in a real situation, unless he can get the guy to attack him just like his imaginary kata opponent.

  Combat is random, chaotic, and brutal. It just don't mirror the rigid, pre-defined movements of a form. And it doesn't suffer fools. (not calling you a fool)
